The gameplay is solid, but SNK Playmore was pretty clueless about tailoring the game to the DS platform. The bottom screen displays a scrollable map of the stage, but it's useless. Metal Slug 7 may be an example of a franchise running in place, but with this much non-stop action and breathtaking destruction, who's complaining?
Fans of Metal Slug will not be disappointed with Metal Slug 7. The difficulty of the game and the same great frantic gameplay of the series returns and the added bonus of the training missions of Combat School help add to its replay value a bit. It would have been nice to have a few more Main Mission levels and to have new levels for your training, but this is still a solid title that won't disappoint.
This is a great game if you're fan of the series you will want to buy it.
Metal Slug games tend to disappear fast and never return, so snag this one fast and don’t be sluggish. If you see a sale, bite and don’t hesitate. Any Metal Slug fan needs to have this game, assuming you have a DS or at least plan to get one. It is hard to get tired of this game and keeping to the arcade 2D style is the best part. Even though the DS is made for the touch screen, Metal Slug doesn’t need it. You’ll feel like you’re playing an arcade game without forking over the dollars in quarters; and that is the intent.
Some will deride the lack of innovation and deride another iteration of the same game. But for me, this is exactly why it is such a strong experience - it is Metal Slug.
All together, I really enjoyed Metal Slug 7, and I'm pretty happy we got this DS port prior to the XBLA release that's coming up. I imagine the XBLA release will end up looking pretty solid too, but if you're wanting to play the game now, there's really no reason you shouldn't pick this one, since it's a solid entry into the series, and provides a really satisfying 2D action game on the go.

SNK Playmore hat hier, wie schon damals mit Metal Slug Advance ein geniales Handheld Shoot’em up abgeliefert, dass in jede gut sortierte Nintendo DS Sammlung gehört. Metal Slug 7 trumpft dabei mit den Stärken seiner Vorgänger auf und kann mit den neuen Slugs genügend eigene Akzente setzen, dabei bietet es für Profis genauso viel wie für blutige Anfänger. Wo Metal Slug drauf steht, ist halt auch Metal Slug drin! Für alle die jetzt nicht mehr auf die PAL-Version warten können und nicht vor einem Import zurückschrecken, kann ich nur eine klare Kaufempfehlung aussprechen.
The problem is that it rarely goes beyond what’s been previously established; aside from a few insanely awesome boss fights and a handful of fancy new throwaway underlings to ravage, nearly all of your foes have been plucked from the older titles. Don’t let that stop you from importing this game, though. In fact, it’d be surprising if all of you hardcore fans haven’t given this a whirl already. Combat School challenges aside, Metal Slug 7 has everything that made the series great in the first place. So do yourself a favor and play this. General Morden deserves another ass-kicking.
Metal Slug hasn't been this much fun for years. Whatever you were expecting from this DS offering, it surely wasn't one of the best installments to date, yet that's precisely what you get with Metal Slug 7.

Regardless of the platform, it’s good to see Metal Slug back in action with all of the same old intense gameplay that has made it such a hit with shoot-’em-up arcade fans for more than a decade. This may not quite be what fans of the series have come to expect, but it’s at least a good way to tide yourself over until the presumably more full-featured version of the game hits the Xbox 360 next year.
Metal Slug 7 is another great installment to the classic series. With fast and endearing shooting action, this is one of the best DS game of 2008.

Metal Slug 7 might be missing a few things but the overall game is a load of fun. I find myself putting this game on every now and when I do I seem to loose track of time, the game is that much fun. Fans of old action games should pick this one up immediately.
Metal Slug 7 is a godsend to hardcore gamers looking for a portable fix. It should also please longtime fans of the series by staying true to its roots without adding anything in the way of touch-screen gimmickry. While it may not be a sprawling epic, Metal Slug 7 is a short blast of adrenaline, perfect for getting a quick fix of action on the bus or in between classes. It’s not for everyone, especially those not inclined towards twitch-reflex gameplay, but for those who like that style of game, Metal Slug 7 is a satisfying portion of hardcore gaming on the go.
Bottom Line: If you had expected a reboot of the classic franchise then you’re going to be disappointed. If you like the Metal Slug series, then you will like Metal Slug 7 - it does what all the others have before it. If you have never tried the games but enjoy old-skool platform antics, then give it a try. If you are in need of a good stress reliever then the combat school mode is just for you as you can dip in for 10/20 minutes and blow the shit out of everything. I presonaly enjoyed the title and it satisfied what I wanted from the title, MetalSlug, no more - no less. Just good honest blasting fun.
The Metal Slug series are still great games to play after all these years and considering how many versions are out there Metal Slug 7 feels fresh and is a real blast to play.
If you’re a Metal Slug fan you owe it to yourself not to miss Metal Slug 7. Almost everything about the game is a true 'Thank You letter to all of the fans that still cherish the series. If you’re a moderate fan of the series then you will still enjoy the game but probably be upset at how quickly the game is over. I say put it back in your DS and play it again. There is always something happening on the screen that you haven’t seen before, well at least not enough in my opinion.
At the end of the day, MS7 is a good - but not great - arcade shooter. I certainly wouldn't dissuade anyone from buying it, but it's not one that ranks terribly high on my recommendation list either. It's fun for what it is, but won't be everyone's cup of tea.
In a way, Metal Slug is like the AC/DC of the gaming world. They're both loud, brash, and they've been putting out the same material over and over again. While you won't find much new with Metal Slug 7, there's still plenty to enjoy. It's as fast-paced and over the top as ever, and features some action-packed levels to blast through either on foot or in a vehicle. It's odd that it's on the DS, however, as you'll find virtually nothing in the way of touchscreen utilization. While that's not a huge loss by any means, it's certainly disappointing that it doesn't offer up any co-op gameplay (a staple of the series). It may not offer anything fresh, but fans of the series are sure to enjoy another title in a solid franchise.
With no Multiplayer, no on-line play and not even the ability to upload your score, there's little reason to load up Metal Slug 7 after the initial play through and even that shouldn't take you too long. Yes, you could rescue more prisoners or attempt to get a high score but there's still not nearly enough to do. Obviously the developers have attempted to address this with the Boot Camp feature but this is simply a collection of scenes lifted from the main game. What Metal Slug 7 does have is the same great degree of humor it's always had, it's just a shame there isn't just a little more to it.

Det är tillräckligt svårt för att ge tålmodiga spelare något rejält att bita i (förutsatt att man inte väljer den löjligt lätta easy-nivån) särskilt med övningslägets krav på full koncentration. Metal Slug 7 is een goede overzetting van de arcade game en er gaat weinig verloren op de DS, behalve dan de coöperatieve modus voor twee spelers, een zware domper. Wel moeten nieuwkomers rekening houden met het feit dat de game erg moeilijk is en ook maar zeven levels heeft waar in twee uur doorheen gespeeld kan worden door iemand die weet wat hij doet. De game is inmiddels ook aangekondigd voor Xbox LIVE Arcade, dus mensen die dit liever op een televisiescherm spelen, kunnen beter wachten. Voor alle fans die niet kunnen wachten: halen die game, het is de gebruikelijke actie die je van Metal Slug gewend bent.
Chegados aqui o balanço é incontornável; Metal Slug 7 é um jogo possível para a Nintendo DS, mas fica bastante aquém da “verdadeira sequela” por que os fãs mais anseiam para a série, especialmente desde a terceira versão, considerada como o vértice e pináculo dos "shooters". E desta vez, o resultado abaixo das expectativas gera-se sobretudo pela ausência da excepcional arte gráfica 2D, profundidade das missões e falta de opções para múltiplos jogadores. Ainda assim subsiste um Metal Slug competente e capaz de proporcionar bons desafios, em particular nas “boss fights”, épicas e forjadas a aço, com boa parte da fanfarra de explosões e excitações, simplesmente é incapaz de alcançar a redoma dos melhores episódios.
While its graphics look jaggy on the tiny DS screen, there's no two-player mode and it game uses very little of the system's touch screen abilities, but if you're in the market for a run and gun video game with lots of action, Metal Slug 7 will work out your trigger finger.

Metal Slug 7 is an extremely solid entry in the Metal Slug series. It features the wonderful visuals and honed gameplay that fans have come to expect, but it does little to push any boundaries. The absence of co-operative multiplayer feels like a waste and only serves to further emphasise the brevity of the single player campaign. It might not keep you entertained for weeks on end, but Metal Slug 7 is still a blast while it lasts.
So in summary, it is more of the same, slug-wise. It is a great conversion that does work well on the form factor of the DS. Controls are simple, and it’s fun to play. Just don’t expect it to last too long.
Essentially, Metal Slug 7 is one for the fans, designed with an "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality. There's nothing here that revolutionises the series, indeed there's nothing here that looks remotely modern. Some might even say it's a step back, given the disappointing lack of a co-op mode (a long-running series feature), and no online leaderboards means there's little replay value. Still, Metal Slug 7 provides its army of die-hard fans with seven new levels to battle through and new slugs to enjoy. It might be too hard for most, but it's just about right for those who care.
Rather than being something really special, it is merely (!) a rewarding, polished, charming yet teeth-gnashingly difficult shooter rendered with pristine 2D visuals, and an easy recommendation for fans of the genre. If, however, the thought of constant restarts, unavoidable deaths and thumb-aching button-mashing isn’t your thing, we suggest you look elsewhere.
It's fun, and if you're a Metal Slug fan I'd encourage you to still pick it up, as it's more from the franchise many of us love to a stalker-like degree, but when you put it up against other offerings on the system Metal Slug 7 comes up seriously short. What's here is fun. What's missing, however, is staying power.
Overall, Metal Slug 7 for the NDS is a solid and difficult side-scrolling shooter that adds little to the franchise. Fans of the series and the genre may enjoy the title, but may also grow bored of the stale gameplay elements. If you haven't played any of the other Metal Slug games or are new to the genre, then this title is a great game to start off with, but don't expect to have your socks knocked off.
While it may not have evolved a great deal Metal Slug 7 still carries on the classic gameplay that made the series popular. We are left wondering though what a possible eighth entrant may hold, surely by that point some changes will need to be made.
However, where it matters most, Metal Slug 7 delivers. The shrink from arcade to DS screen in no way cramps the experience, offering the same amount of exacting control as it ever did. The new weapons and vehicles add little to the formula, but the strength of the foundations upon which the game builds is self-evident. If SNK Playmore can match its mechanical creativity with the kind of level design ingenuity displayed by the SNK of old, then Metal Slug 8 could well be the series' high point. One thing's for sure: as with Metal Slug 7, it will no doubt be a game we've, one way or another, already played many times before. And we won't even mind.
Overall what more can I say? It is a solid run and gun Metal Slug game, it doesn’t innovate anywhere it just gives you non-stop action. Buy it if you’re a fan or the series or just a little curious for some hard action.

For what’s there, Metal Slug 7 is a very good game full of crazy action, great graphics, smooth animations, and a definite challenge. The only problem is that there is so much missing from this package. No multiplayer, no leaderboards, no branching paths, and only seven story missions won’t keep you coming back even with the additional eighty training levels. While you will likely have a great time with Metal Slug 7, its lack of depth makes it one you’ll want to rent rather than purchase.

The main campaign is relatively average, but it’s nice that you can jump into any mission once you’ve beaten it. Unfortunately, the bottom screen contains a useless lo-res map instead of incorporating the action somehow and the “Training Grounds” bonus challenges feel too similar to the main game.

Ein Metal Slug, das man allein spielen muss, ist nur ein halbes - die Kampfschule ist für Hardcore-Metalslugler zwar ein akzeptabler Trost, aber kein vollwertiger Ersatz. So bleibt ein solider Vertreter der ruhmreichen Serie, der aber weit von den Glanzlichtern der Reihe entfernt ist.
Metal Slug 7's a mostly faithful sequel that works on the DS, especially considering that there hasn't been a commendable portable installment since the NeoGeo Pocket days. But if you've got an Xbox 360 at home, the ol' "wait and see" approach probably wouldn't hurt.
If you're an arcade enthusiast or want a suitable action game for your DS this holiday season, Metal Slug 7 is definitely worth locking and loading into your system. Just make sure you're aware of what you're getting into. This is a game you play sporadically for a few hours, shelve and then play again when you're in the mood for it. Long term isn't an option. But hey, that's what makes arcade games great.
It pains me to spell this out: Metal Slug is played for the challenging uphill climb on the way to the thrill of victory, especially when it is the thrill of victory with a friend who didn't use up all the continues. But hey, if you want to play the same Metal Slug over and over again just to best your own score without showing it off to the world, or if you want to win over some drill sergeant by beating timed challenges, you can be pleased with the drastic differences all you want, by your lonesome self.

If there's a criticism to be made here it's that, well, it's just another Metal Slug game. For fans, this is certainly a good thing. But when it's all said and done, there's nothing here you haven't experience dozens of times in the past. It's a shame they didn't go with a compilation as well. Then players would truly be getting some bang for their buck.
Nevertheless, what we’ve ended up with is still a highly playable version of Metal Slug on the DS, and regardless of the steps back to suit the hardware, the end result is not all that bad. You can’t help but wish for more, although for any game to be truly special on its eight iteration is a very big ask.
In sintesi: MS7 è sprovvisto di tutte le caratteristiche che hanno fatto grandi i capitoli precedenti, e in tutti gli altri comparti si rivela insipido e mancante di innovazioni. Ciò non significa che sia un fallimento totale come MS4, però è un gioco assolutamente privo di mordente, non degno di fare parte della saga principale; sarebbe stato meglio farne una "side story" come tutti i giochi finora apparsi sulle console portatili prima di questo.
I was pretty stoked to play this game when I first put it in the DS. Unfortunately, Metal Slug 7 just doesn’t deliver a complete gameplay experience. It’s too short, too lacking in features, and doesn’t give players anything extraordinary to make up for its mishaps. Maybe one day when the price drops, this game will be worth your time, but for now, this is a game just about everybody but die-hard fans can skip.
For all of my bitching, I don’t hate Metal Slug 7. It’s fun enough, functional, and perfect for short bus rides, but I enjoyed playing it more the last six times it was released. Metal Slug 7 proves that shaking down a series for a seventh installment only works if it stars Ron Perlman.
