You also have the option of shooting side-by-side a friend, although I found that slightly less fun. Offering insane mayhem with simple controls and crazy eye candy, Metal Slug Anthology is 2D shooting action at its finest.

Beyond the surface, you'll find a set of imaginative and extremely well-developed ports of games that did very well in other countries, but didn't get the recognition in this part of the world that they deserved. Due for imminent release in Europe, let's just hope that the Metal Slug games do well this time around! Lord knows they deserve it for this astounding title.

These flaws are far from enough to tarnish this exquisite collection, however. This is the quintessential set for shooter fans, and there’s enough solid gold 2D gameplay to satisfy even the most hardcore action fan. So whether you’re trying them for the first time or just trying to recapture memories of the arcade scene you remember and loved, Metal Slug Anthology deserves a place on the shelf for anyone who considers them self a true gamer.

The lack of Classic Controller support is stupefying and although the games are perfectly playable using the Wiimote, it’s something of a missed opportunity. The lack of meaningful bonus content will also annoy those hardcore Slug fans that have owned many of these games in some shape or form previously. Casting these minor criticisms aside for a moment, it’s hard not to feel a warm glow inside when playing such a classic series. Metal Slug is the product of a bygone era where innovation, humour and enjoyment were prized above all else.

Overall, this anthology will provide a couple of hours worth of entertainment for anyone interested in retro games. The graphics and Gameplay styles cannot match up to more modern games like gears of war or Battlefield 2142, but the arcade style has a certain magic to it, which makes the game fun for both children and adults alike. The game's 2 player mode is also good fun, and allows you to join in with a friend to battle the evil hordes of whatever. In conclusion, this game is well worth a try.

Metal Slug Anthology is already a tremendous deal for your money, and the fact that it's portable makes it all the sweeter, especially since you can save the game when you quit and return to where you left off. It's definitely worth checking out for anyone into chaotic old school mayhem.

But while reviewing games is undeniably more than just critiquing gameplay, we're not going to mark Metal Slug Anthology down for its menu design and some shocking ugliness in the surrounding package. You should still buy this game, and not because it shows us how far we've come either - but rather because, in the case of 2D art and gameplay design, it shows us just how far we've since regressed.

Even though the PSP and Wii versions weren’t great, the PS2 version of Metal Slug Anthology shows just how fantastic retro game collections can be. Seven of the best 2D scrolling shooters in one package is nothing to be sniffed at, and they’re finally available with no stupid controls, lengthy load times or excessive slowdown. If you’ve never played the series before, shame on you, but now you’ve got the perfect excuse to see the error of your ways and enjoy some good old fashioned coin-op fun.

Those looking for some classic side-scrolling action will simply love what Metal Slug Anthology has to offer. The games are very enjoyable both as a single-player experience and as a two player multiplayer experience. Of course with these games being arcade perfect, they were never going to test the graphical capabilities of the Wii but then again there hasn't been a single Wii game that you could say that about yet. The Metal Slug games have always been about the game-play and within minutes of playing any one the seven games in this collection you'll find yourself immediately hooked. Those who have chosen the Wii as their first foray into the world of gaming might not understand the appeal or heritage of this excellent series but I would urge them to give it a go. Provided you have a GameCube controller handy, Metal Slug Anthology is one of the best games currently available for the Wii.

Those looking for some classic side-scrolling action will simply love what Metal Slug Anthology has to offer. The games are very enjoyable both as a single-player experience and as a two player multiplayer experience. Of course with these games being arcade perfect, they aren't exactly graphical masterpieces and in no way test the graphical capabilities of the PlayStation 2. To be honest though, I would rather have them in their original form because when you purchase collections such as this you expect the games to retain their original look and feel and that's exactly what the games in the Metal Slug Anthology have done. If arcade side-scrolling action titles are your thing, Metal Slug Anthology is simply a must own title.

The only thing that hurts Metal Slug Anthology’s value is that it is so limited of a collection. In compilations like Namco Museum there’s usually something for almost everyone, but even shooter fans may not find a lot of value here if they aren’t particular fans of the franchise’s unique style and sense of humor. To the target audience though, Metal Slug Anthology is an incredible value.

There’s little to say about this particular celebratory compilation that you won’t find written on the back of the box; it’s a perfect conversion of every Metal Slug game ever made on one disc, with the brand-spanking-new 6 included in case you needed an extra reason to pick up this excellent little package. If you’re a fan of Metal Slug, if you’ve spent years getting an earful off an older generation of arcade frequenters because you’ve not played the series properly, or if you just fancy having a pop to see what all the fuss is about, then this is quite simply a title you can’t afford to miss. A cult gaming package that’s hard to best at a price that’s painfully reasonable - what more can you ask for?

Metal Slug is the most intense run-and-gun arcade franchise that hasn’t broken from its 2D commitment (at least not in the United States) since it premiered on the NeoGeo over a decade ago. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of its side-scrolling shooter series, SNK Playmore has put together a seven game compilation for the Wii, PS2 and PSP. All three versions contain Metal Slug 1 through 6 and Metal Slug X, but the latter portable edition is the most practical one. It emulates the series just as well as its console counterparts and can be taken anywhere that a Metal Slug fan treks.

Metal Slug Anthology for the PSP is a complete package for any fan of the addictive shooter even with the annoying load times that show up often. Still, it’s hard to ignore the action-packed collection that is still just as fun as the day you plucked that first quarter in the arcades. If anything, this is a real Must Have for fans new and old so pick this one up.

There are quite a few Wii games out there that just tack the motion-sensing controls on. They just feel out of place. In this case the producers just decided to skip the controls almost completely and offer a fun multiplayer game. I’m not saying that you have to play it multiplayer, but it is definitely a lot of fun with some friends. I personally had a blast playing through it and even if it is just a compilation of some older games, it’s better than some of the games that developers are throwing out there for the Wii.

Metal Slug Anthology is a great value. Along with seven full arcade games--each rife with alternate paths, hidden areas, and some clever Easter eggs--you get music, concept art galleries, and a confounding Q&A with developers of the series, where they discuss topics ranging from the underlying design ethic of the series to their personal casting choices for a nonexistent live-action Metal Slug movie. The Metal Slug series has been responsible for the best 2D shooter action anywhere in the past 10 years, and arguably ever, and it makes for a great fit on the PSP.

Metal Slug is a game that looks older than it really is. The franchise is just celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with the release of Metal Slug Anthology on Nintendo's Wii. The appearance of the game is intentional: a simple look for a simple game. The only accurate definition for simple would be mechanics, and not actual gameplay. This is a tough game to beat on any difficulty setting and with any number of extra players.

In essence, Metal Slug Anthology offers up one big chunk of videogaming history in one neat little package. For the six titles you're getting, there's no doubting its value for money either, especially so with unlockable artwork and interviews with the development staff as an added bonus. If you're tired of the unnecessary complications of some current generation videogames and you feel that what you need is a smattering of relief with quick fix action, then you're not going to go far wrong with this one - particularly if you've checked out Sega's Gunstar Heroes on the Virtual Console and loved that arrangement of relentless action.

Aside from a few minor grievances, Metal Slug Anthology serves up one of the finest videogame compilations ever created and is without question worthy of a place in anyone's collection. With the budget price and the console debut of Metal Slug 6, this will surely be a big hit with fans - I can only hope that it entices a whole new generation of players into its brilliantly bizarre world, as it certainly deserves to be recognized for the exceptional gameplay experience that it is.

Metal Slug Anthology is a worthy addition to any PS2 owner's game collection. It may be unusual, insistent on clinging to a long-gone gaming era, and incredibly hard at times, but by including every major Metal Slug game, is without doubt one of the finest platform shooter titles yet released.

In an era where these old classics can be heartily downloaded it doesn’t seem like shelling out your hard earned money for this collection of dated games is that feasible an idea. At the end of the day you’re really not going to cover any ground or progress through an Oscar worthy script but it is an essential purchase for the sole reason that it has become timeless and cult. Its tried and tested. Instead of umming and ahhing over which new game to buy or play that could be crap (or even worse: mediocre) you can always come back to a game like this, or an anthology like this. For those old enough to affectionately remember Metal Slug’s hayday or those young enough to be curious by an explosive blast from the past, Metal Slug’s audience is universal. Metal Slug anthology is not a game to complete and then toss away either. It has a potentially unlimited replayability as well, which is emphasised by the lack of saving and pausing. It is immediate, and always ready. Recommended.

Metal Slug muss man einfach lieben. There are a lot of classic video game compilations already on the PSP and Metal Slug Anthology is one of the best. It offers seven of the best 2D action games of all time in one succinct package, that's a deal you shouldn't pass up ... no matter who you are!

It's hard to really fault Metal Slug Anthology, as a collection of classic arcade shooters it does exactly what it says on the tin and existing fans will be in Metal Slug heaven having the whole series so perfectly formed in the palm of their hands. Does it stand up to the uninitiated? Yes, to a degree, it's fun, playable and defiantly addictive. It lacks all the graphical bells and whistles you may find in newer games and it's never going to cause you to stop and think but sometimes in this world of photo realism and rag doll physics a bit of mindless arcade action is just what the doctor ordered.

There's no doubt that Metal Slug Anthology offers incredible value for money and the whole series together on one disc makes it essential for Metal Slug fans. Whether or not newcomers will take to what is often a demoralising experience will depend entirely on the individual. If the idea of single shot kills causes a sharp pain to run down your spine, stick to modern action offerings, but if you want a challenge look no further.

In the end, Metal Slug Anthology is one of the better compilations on the market, easily offering gamers with some of the best run and gun action for your buck. I mean, we're talking seven full games here and they aren't short â€" not to mention they're arcade perfect and not readily available on other platforms. Seriously, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. Just not the Wii version. Seriously.

In fact, even at its $39.99 price point Anthology still delivers seven titles at just under six bucks a pop, which is an amazing deal when comparing that to Metal Slug 3 or Metal Slug 4 & 5 that released years ago on PS2 and Xbox at the same price. You’re getting every major page of Metal Slug history, minimal load, a couple basic extras, and a ton of action. Whether you snatch this off the shelf immediately, wait for a price drop, or rent it for a throwback night of arcade bliss, grab a friend and put some quality time into one of SNK’s greatest franchises. And be sure to do it on PS2; it’s the best version available hands-down.

I’d imagine that if game developers snorted about four pounds of cocaine, watched the first scene of Saving Private Ryan repeatedly, and played Contra for a week, something like Metal Slug would be the result. An arcade classic for a decade, the series packed ridiculous amounts of over-the-top action into every single second of gameplay. It’s a fantastic formula that’s still fun as hell to play…as long as you pick the right Wii control scheme. At $39.99, Metal Slug Anthology is certainly worth picking up for fans of the series. The ports are faithful and (more importantly) still fun, so it’s a good purchase as long as you don’t expect too many extras.

Metal Slug Anthology is a great collection for anyone who ever liked a Metal Slug game. All of the arcade greats are here, although it is plagued with load times, arcade-imperfect porting, and unnatural-feeling Wiimote controls. With such a massive collection, there should have been more extras, but with seven games on one disc, it is definitely something that should not be missed by fans.

Metal Slug Anthology’s somewhat cute and funny visuals manage to present themselves as being at the same time effortless and impressive, and its cartoon appearance belies a game which can be fiendishly challenging and rewarding to complete. The PSP port in itself is not perfect, but with 6 and a bit full games, all of which are pretty damned well polished side-scrolling shooter experiences, it comes pretty easy to recommend to anyone looking for a bit of classic coin-op action.

Whether you would like to spend the cash on this game or not, it offers great value by managing to pack in 7 games on one disc, which while quite old still manage to stand up to the test of time, sure they may not be everyone’s idea of fun, but for some this is a bit of a bargain.

All in all the Metal Slug Anthology ends up doing everything it is supposed to do. It compiles seven of the best 2D shooters onto one disc, all for a slightly cheaper price tag. Unfortunately you won't find a lot of variety in this collection, but that is more a complaint about the original games and not this compilation. This is a no frills package that gives you seven games that are still a lot of fun to play, even if the game play is a bit outdated. It would have been nice to see a little more emphasis added to the extra features, but this is one disc that Wii owning Metal Slug fans should check out.

Metal Slug offers a lot of bang for your buck. You get Metal Slug one through six, as well as X, for $40. For anyone that is a fan of the series or genre, it’s hard not to pick up. The game does little with the Wii’s motion-sensitive controller, but still offers an insane co-op game providing Wii owners with hours of fun. While the game is difficult, SNK has generously offered players unlimited continues, and while this takes away from the challenge of previous releases, the games are so blister-inducing that you won’t mind the free replays. If you’re looking for a great collection of somewhat dated shoot-‘em-ups or simply want to have the entire series in one spot, and can overlook the somewhat questionable controls, you won’t find a better deal then Metal Slug Anthology.

If you’re looking for a few more classic titles to add to your Wii roster the Metal Slug Anthology isn’t a bad move, as it’s essentially the same cost per game as the NES Virtual Console titles. As a total package though, Metal Slug Anthology is still a bit of a letdown, and doesn’t really live up to the “10th Year Anniversary” hype it’s marketed as. These are amazing games, and if you want to own them in any form, now’s a good chance to do that. Just don’t expect a grand fanfare when you boot the game up. It’s basically seven titles for $40 bucks. No more, no less.

This is notable mainly for its generosity, as already noted, and anyone who fell in love with Metal Slug's gorgeously animated characters and effects will be in, yes, seventh heaven (if you can handle seven games of unrelentingly hardcore side-on blasting). As a retro treat, Metal Slug Anthology is beyond reproach. As a showcase for the capabilities of Wii, or something to fill the aching void left behind by finishing Twilight Princess, it's definitely lacking. Nevertheless, compared to tatty nonsense like Far Cry Vengeance, it's a masterpiece.

WiiThe Next Level
It's not just that the lack of continuity between, well, anything that's jarring, but this does eventually subtract from the game. The Metal Slugs may be considered violent, but there's levity to it, and not just because of the puckish art and animation. In the first four, you knew who you were up against and why you're motivated to shoot. Take that away, as Metal Slug 5 does, and the deaths become faceless. It risks becoming the senseless tableau of destruction and debauchery politicians love raving about. The sooner you lose sight of whom and why you're fighting, the sooner these wars become games.

Perhaps it's symptomatic of the state of modern game pricing that, even at £15, there's still a slight tinge of doubt over whether this series of niche ports can justify its RRP. While comfortably the most playable version of the release available (compared to the Wii edition's clunkily implemented tilt controls or the PSP edition's epic load times), it still isn't quite the perfect Metal Slug release some would have hoped for, and it's doubtful it will take SNK long to work out the value of releasing the series in definitive, online co-op ready form on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live. Still, you would be hard-pressed to find a cheaper way to indulge your nostalgic streak, and few people deserve to live their lives without experiencing the giddy thrills on offer here.

The game IS old but still strangely addictive. It's a no-brainer to play. Run, jump, shoot etc. but it just draws you in to play a little more. Yes, you are gunning down people or setting them alight with a flamer thrower, but the cartoon level of violence is no worse than you'll see in Itchy and Scratchy these days. So it is a game I'd let my kids play. However GTA, The Getaway and Metal Gear are still firmly on the top shelf out of reach. So if you have played and enjoyed the Metal Slug games in the past and want to relive them again and again with a mate it's worth a punt. However don't build up your hopes for the "new" Metal Slug game as this is really just more of the same with less pixel-y backdrops.

Death can be cheap, happens often, and is utterly unavoidable until ninja skillz are earned through lots of playing. The real question becomes whether or not it's possible to ignore the loading, slowdown, loading, cheap deaths, and loading to get to the goodness inside. For fans of the series who already know what they're in for it's a qualified yes, because when everything is working as it should this is a great collection, even with its technical issues. It's a rollercoaster ride between the great games and clunky execution though, making it highly doubtful Metal Slug Anthology will be picking up fans outside the series faithful.

Have the people running SNK ever played a Metal Slug game? Besides these user interface issues, the games themselves are outstanding. Some are better than others, but they all feature the same style of non-stop action and spectacular visuals effects. I've always loved Metal Slug, but it's a shame that a new generation of gamers will be introduced to it in such a shoddy package.

Verdammt schade.

To Metal Slug officionados though, and that strange band of hardcore gamers who for some reason see SNK as untouchable, this is all moot. They need no more convincing to buy this package than the name "Metal Slug" on the front. Even they should be aware though that having all the games together makes it incredibly stark just how samey they are, and how little genuine work has gone into the series over the years. A better example of the law of diminishing returns is going to be difficult to come by, but despite that what it does do, it does very well - just be warned that it doesn't do very much at all, and even when it does do something it does it over and over and over again until you're bored to tears by it. A curio for fans with money to burn only, I think.

So, let's look at this rationally: here we have a game that compiles seven barely-different shoot 'em up games into one Wii disk, so the only way you're going to like it at all is if you like the original Metal Slug. None of the sequels have done anything particularly different, and every one of them has a ton of throw-backs to the original. Don't get me wrong, as a fan of the series I totally enjoyed beating each and every level of Metal Slug Anthology, but by the end of Metal Slug 6, even I was getting a little bored with the repetition and lack of innovation. At best, Metal Slug Anthology is a good and mindless shooter that's perfect for wasting an hour or two when you need a break from Twilight Princess. Ideally, you'll buy it because you already know you like the Metal Slug series and you want to have some kind of perfect archival copy of each game that you can play on your Wii.

Metal Slug Anthology is not without its share of weaknesses. While ‘classic’ graphics are expected on the Wii’s Virtual Console entries, it seems like a $40 game should probably look a bit less dated. Most of the schemes taking advantage of the Wii Remote and Nunchuck’s capabilities feel like cheap gimmicks that are tough to use effectively. In spite of these flaws, the game remains quite a bit of fun and gamers who like side-scrolling shooters will likely feel that Metal Slug Anthology provides them with their money’s worth.

All in all, though, there is very little to fault Metal Slug: Anthology. Big guns, big vehicles and some colossal enemies is a combination that seldom comes under serious scrutiny, and of all the big platforming shooters out there, Metal Slug owns the field. Meticulous care and experience is woven deeply into each and every game, and in spite of its age, having all seven games on one disc is nothing short of a compliment to your collection.

Metal Slug's simply impossible at times, and the brief joy of rescuing all of the POWs and reaping their particular rewards turns out to be short-lived; you'll rarely register the bonus that comes with rescuing them and then defeating the boss that stands between you and level's end. Understand that the game's still a joy to behold and play, provided you feel no shame in hitting the continue button. But assuming you're just like the rest of us, without the superhuman reflexes needed to counter Metal Slug Anthology's endless fusillade of covering fire, slowdown, and technical shortcomings, you should expect to die about every 15 seconds -- if you're lucky. This is a convenient, handy, and well-intentioned collection of Metal Slug that's an idle diversion for the series' fans. But if you're looking for an arcade-perfect experience, you should definitely seek out the far superior Xbox collections SNK has released over the past couple of years.

Seven games, each one a classic in its own right, on a single UMD is a steal. Actually almost anything SNK puts out with Metal Slug slapped on the box is a winner; seven Metal Slug’s are even better. While this PSP compilation boasts all of the 2-D renditions of the main series, it’s either a system limitation or poor coding that at times renders these games unplayable.

Metal Slug Anthology was supposed to be one of the portable system's A-list titles. Instead, due to reasons that probably couldn't have been helped, it ends up being one of the system's biggest jokes. General Morden would be proud.
