FreeCell was programmed to randomly select from one of 32,000 "games" (1,000,000 in Windows XP version) at the start of every new session. Each game consists of a pre-determined order in which the cards are dealt. Although the same game can be played differently, the order and sequence of the game will remain exactly the same every time.
In the game's help file is the phrase "It is believed (although not proven) that every game is winnable". For a long time, game #11982 was suspected to be unwinnable. Later, multiple programs were written by die-hard FreeCell fanatics whose sole purpose was to exhaustively comb through every combination until it found a way to win. These programs all failed to successfully complete game #11982, thus confirming its unwinnable status.
The Windows XP version was upgraded to randomly choose from a bank of 1,000,000 pre-dealt games. Eight of them are thought to be unwinnable. Add
