I admit that my Top 5 PS2 games article was based a lot around hype, the fact is that I never did get a chance to fully test the games out. I believe that Midnight Club: Street Racing is the third best game to get for your PS2 collection. Midnight Club's great visuals, fantastic and addictive gameplay, and its great soundtrack create one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I have ever had. The game may very well get nominated for numerous awards come this Christmas when the Extreme Awards 2000 arrive. If you are an avid racer who will play anything from Ridge Racer, to Need for Speed to Gran Turismo, then you must not delay and pick up Midnight Club, if you are a racing fan period then the game is a solid choice once again, and if you loved Driver or Midtown Madness to death, then, you guessed Midnight is your game, go out and buy it you won't regret the decision.
Gamer's Pulse
All in all as a Playstation 2 launch title Midnight Club does provide gamers with an early look at some of the graphical capabilities of this rocking new platform, and gives a gamer hope for the many games to come.
Midnight Club is an extremely fun arcade-style racer. The two cities are so huge that you'll find yourself eventually gravitating to the cruise mode just joyriding around without any specific objective. But the gameplay options on offer make the game a blast, regardless of what mode you choose.
Considering that the whole idea of the Midnight Club was taken from a real underground group is Japan, it's ironic that Tokyo wasn't included in the game. Granted, it was left out due to time constraints, but still... Oh, well. Perhaps we'll see it in the inevitable sequel. Not that I'm complaining; Midnight Club is a great achievement and I can't wait to see what Rockstar has in store for the next game.

With only two cities, the racing does become a tad repetitive, and the selection of vehicles, while plentiful, misses the boat on variety. Many of the vehicles are similar in design, and the handling ratio doesn’t vary all too much. The means needed to unlock these rides is grand, forcing you to search the entire city for hidden markers, and race head-to-head to win the ride of your opponent. Midnight Club has the racing aspect down pat, and the graphical front is breathtaking, especially the vehicular deformation, but the game just doesn’t have the drive to keep you playing. Variety is crucial nowadays, and unfortunately, Midnight Club doesn’t have it.

Game Revolution
Ultimately, Midnight Club falls a few memory cards short of being a good next-generation game. While offering a decent helping of fun, the bland textures and ubiquitous gameplay make for a somewhat unexciting PS2 start.

Expansive driving environments based on actual cities. Sounds pretty good, eh? In some ways Midnight Club is impressive, but in many ways it’s just plain dull. Cruising the streets and learning the huge road system is an incredible challenge. There are just a ton of back alleys and unmapped areas. The control is also fairly tight and the racing is loaded with plenty of traffic and pedestrians. The real downfall of the game is the repetition. You just keep following the other cars over and over and over. Sure the routes change, but the entire thing gets a little boring with only two cities. I think I would have preferred more, smaller cities. There are going to be plenty of racing games for the PS2, and I think this one just isn’t worth the 50 clams.

The one thing that didn't impress me was the music. The generic techno beats aren't bad, but they should have used something more upbeat to match the adrenaline rush of racing down a city street at 100 mph.

This game has a much improved sequel. Rockstar took almost everything I have said to heart and fixed it, even though I'm writing this review 8 months after the sequels release. Amazing isn't it? This is a mildly fun racing title, but it's very hard to go back after playing games that are so much better.
