Phased outWhile the Classic version is still available to play on the Minecraft website (and from the official Minecraft client), it has been all but phased out--in accordance with the plans of Markus "Notch" Persson, who in 2010 stated:
Minecraft is still in alpha, but is rapidly nearing beta. I've only got one more feature to add; multiplayer support. On September 15, 2011, sounds and music ceased to work, and saving levels to the online server was no longer possible (levels previously saved on the server were lost) due to Mojang removing the game's resources directory from its servers. On August 8, 2012, the link to the Minecraft Classic subpage had been removed from the Minecraft home page; while it was restored after complaints, it was removed again on July 1, 2013. In September 2015 the page was removed entirely, thus ending Minecraft Classic for good.
I'm renaming the old version of the game "Minecraft Classic", and will be slowly phasing it out.
I won't remove it, though. Just hide it.
