All in all, Mission Critical is a masterpiece of science fiction and adventure gaming. With its attention to detail and quality writing, Mission Critical harks back to a nearly forgotten time when computer game designers focus not on breathtaking eye candy but on crafting an engaging story. If only the talented developers at Legend Entertainment were still in business, the world of adventure gaming would be a brighter place.

With adventure games such as Superhero League of Hoboken, Companions of Xanth and more recently Death Gate, Legend Entertainment is serious business and each one of their releases is a new star added to their collection. Mission Critical does not fail Legend's reputation as far as I can see, it is the best adventure game the company has ever produced.

Mission Critical has an intriguing and mind-bending story, posing some rather difficult questions about the relationship of mankind and technology and our possible future(s). If you're a sci-fi fan, you really shouldn't miss it. If you can't stand science fiction, you should avoid this game at any cost. My only gripe was (you guessed it) the combat sequences. Not that they were bad - it's just that in my opinion they shouldn't be in an adventure game as they tend to dictate a completely different pace. But on the whole, Mission Critical is a high- quality game in the best tradition of Legend Entertainment Company. I give it an A-.

Put simply, Mission Critical was one of the best adventures of 1995. The halls of a 22nd Century starship are rendered in 7th Guest-like detail, using camera-on-rails animation that delivers an illusion of smooth 3-D movement down hallways or into rooms. Pick up objects, open containers and solve puzzles—all typical adventure fare, but Mission Critical gives you a great deal more. As your adventure moves from the immediate problem of repairing a badly-damaged spacecraft to fighting deep space battles to first contact with aliens, you'll unravel a greater cosmic mystery that could affect the entire human race. A chilling beginning and deep science-fiction premises make Mission Critical an adventure game to savor.

Mission Critical is a great adventure, perhaps the best this season. The use of 3 dimensional models with transitions is innovative and the live-action segments display much talent. The game's story is grand science fiction with a satisfying conclusion and puzzles that make sense. If you feel like wandering the corridors of a star ship and taking part in an epic space adventure, Mission Critical is your ticket.

DOSComputer Games Magazine
Mission Critical is an innovative, entertaining game with a lot to offer the adventure buff. The only thing that Legend is having a hard time adjusting to as they move into this
graphics-heavy phase is letting those graphics speak for themselves. Apparently the temptation is strong to describe an event rather than let it play out on screen. (Of course, it's also easier to program text than graphics.)

DOSQuandary
At first glance this game seems aimed very firmly at those adventurers who prefer to play a more hard-edged science fiction scenario, and so it is, but other adventurers need not be put off by this. Much of the technical jargon spouted by the computer can be safely ignored and the problems -- which are a lot of fun -- can be solved by concentrating on the essentials. Thus you may need part EC2010 to fix a mechanism, but all you need do is find it and find out which slot to put it in. You don't need to understand how it works or even what it does.

Although the gameplay was good, Mission Critical was too short and it has no replay value other than the aforementioned space battle. I finished Mission Critical in about a night and a half. This game is fun and I would recomend it for someone who is new to gaming or is looking for something to play on a slower machine.

Mission Critical is the only adventure game I'm aware of that centers its adventuring almost exclusively on operating and repairing a starship. From the very beginning, you must move around its nine decks to patch holes in the hull, get coolant to the reactor before it melts, and bring the ship's various systems back online. Cutting torches, multitools, and gieger counters will be your pick-up items. Twisted wreckage, blown circuit chips, and stubborn computers will be your puzzles. Once you shore up your ship's ailing systems, you'll interface with various software and ship stations in your quest for answers, as well as discover some explosive intrigue previously stirring amongst your late crew. And though I will not give away the mission, or where it shall all lead, you can be assured that the third disc contains wild, speculative science-fiction allegories that would make D.C. Fontana proud. If any of this interests you, you're about THIS close to having a great time.
