MLB SlugFest 20-03 features the best looking players ever seen in a baseball game, and their crazy animated antics will delight you each and every game no matter how many times you see that behind-the-back catch.

GameCubeGame Chronicles
MLB SlugFest 20-03 is the newest game to join Midway’s rapidly growing line of extreme sports titles – extreme in the gameplay sense of the word; not in the sport itself. And like previous games in this unique sports genre, there is plenty of over-the-top, adrenaline action. When the announcer says “Sammy Sosa’s on fire tonight!”, expect to see flames leaping off his uniform.

I can't stress this enough: MLB Slugfest 20-03 has made a believer out of me. It looks great, and more importantly, it plays great. Cutting out the deadwood that infests real-life baseball was a great idea, and Midway should be very proud of what they've accomplished here. Whether you're a baseball fan or even if you can't stand the sport - you owe it to yourself to check out MLB Slugfest 20-03. GameCube owners should rejoice at this title gracing their console of choice, and I wholly recommend it as a worthy sports title for your shelf.

The commentary is pure genius and if real baseball was narrated this way I would probably watch it more often, but then again, I had high hopes for Dennis Miller in the booth for Monday Night Football, so what do I know?

That's why MLB Slugfest 20-03 (Midway, 2002; pronounced "twenty-oh-three") is such a great game. Instead of making the hits harder than they were before, Slugfest adds hits that were never there. Suddenly, baseball isn't the four-hour bore that more and more people today are suggesting it is. The tie doesn't go to the runner, it goes to whoever can beat the tar out of the other guy. You know this game means business when you discover that one entire button is dedicated solely to pitching nothing but bean balls. Along with a faster pace and a healthy disregard for the established rules of the game, Slugfest provides Turbo meters for its batters and fielders.

Overall, Midway definitely did a great job on this title, and it turns out to be another homerun in the “extreme sports” lineup for the company. If you are a fan of Midway’s crazy, painful sports games, and are also a fan of baseball and baseball simulators, this should be a winner for you in your Gamecube collection. If you aren’t much into baseball, this one may keep you entertained for the “non baseball” parts of it, but the difficulty and game itself may tend to make it a short lived experience overall.

Sports fans looking for a different kind of baseball game will find MLB Slugfest 20-03 an interesting twist in a really great sport. Aside from the occasional repetitive feel, this is an amusing and wildly entertaining game. If you enjoy the Blitz games, you’ll enjoy this take on America’s past time.

In the end, it needs to be said that MLB Slugfest 2003 is exciting and entertaining to play. The crazy manner in which Midway went about creating this title is invigorating and a nice change of pace to the traditional baseball title. While High Heat Major League Baseball 2003 is still my undeniable pick for supreme baseball title on the Playstation 2, MLB Slugfest does offer some incredible gaming in various areas. If simulation baseball games aren't for you, then this may be your ticket to enjoying some of America's favorite pastime. The outrageous plays and unbelievable tactics displayed in Slugfest are enough to make you smile and laugh all around the bases.

PlayStation 2IGN
The most satisfying arcade sports title to come out of the Midway offices as of yet, MLB SlugFest 20-03 does few things incorrectly. Brilliantly illustrated and animated, flawlessly announced, and a synch to get into, there is little holding the baseballer back.

With its standard arcade mode with its code like pin structure and the standard League mode that lets players complete a full season from start to finish, the game has quite a bit of length to it. Although the fun is great at first, players may find that the action does get repetitive after about twenty games. Cheering and jeering your friends as you play is the only true way to fully enjoy the game and its hilarity that it offers. If you’re alone on this one however, give this one a rent and enjoy its special qualities with Midway’s first venture into the baseball genre.

MLB Slugfest 20-03 is the continuation of Midway’s diabolical plan to overhaul just every sport on the planet and add their own unique arcade twist to them, making a once normal sport off the wall, simple, and all about having fun. Football was covered with the originator, NFL Blitz, basketball has been portrayed in the NBA Showtime series, Hockey took the form of NHL Hitz, and finishing off the 4 major sports is the latest into their line-up, MLB Slugfest 20-03. And just like all the games before it, Slugfest turns out to be quite an entertaining and enjoyable game, even if it’s not for everyone.

Slugfest imagines a world where Ken “Steroid Accuser” Caminiti is right, and players are yoked-out mood-swinging millionaires in need of anger-management classes. The purist may shun the over-the-top play, but the rest of us will have plenty of fun playing MLB’s version of the XFL.

Just as Electronic Arts is widely renowned for creating some of the most impressive sports simulations, Midway's arcade roots have destined it to become the king of "adrenaline" sports. Football fans have NFL Blitz, hockey lovers have NHL Hitz, and now America's favorte pastime has been brought to the edge with MLB SlugFest 20-03, the first in the series.

In the end, MLB Slugfest 2003 is an incredibly appealing sports game. While it doesn't possess the sheer addictiveness of, say, NFL Blitz, it's simultaneously a breath of fresh air and a nostalgic look at the baseball game genre. If you haven't enjoyed a baseball game since the original Ken Griffey Jr. for the SNES, then Slugfest is the game you've been thirsting for.

Unlike Midway's other franchises, MLB Slugfest 2003 is a refreshing change of pace because the concept has yet to be run into the ground. It stands head and shoulders above other arcade baseball games like Sega's Home Run King, but a lack of gameplay modes and somewhat drab graphics gives the publisher something to improve for next year's game. If you're a fan of baseball but detest the usually sterile presentation of most baseball video games, give MLB Slugfest 2003 a rental and see if it's for you, but hardball purists need not apply.

Rent it. If you like to keep a selection of games with good multiplayer value, maybe even consider picking up a copy. But as far as must-owns go, MLB Slugfest 20-03 just doesn't quite make the cut.

PlayStation 2PGNx Media
The overall composure of the game is solid, but the CPU is really cheap in a few areas and there can be some really weird things that the CPU will do to you, especially on defense that might have you crying foul, but overall, this is one game that you should not miss out on trying, especially since Baseball is the weakest major sport in video games.

PlayStation 2GameSpy
MLB Slugfest 20-03 sets out to be a casual escape from the rigid environment of Major League Baseball and in that manages to produce a fun but underwhelming title thanks to a lack of replay value and miscellaneous quirks. With that in mind, Slugfest is best suited for head-to-head dorm room battles or gamers looking for a quick baseball fix.

MLB Slugfest is quite a fun and a useful multi-player game, but the 1- player options are not long lasting and will get you bored once you win your regular season. I wouldn’t necessarily buy this game, but it makes a really fun rental.

Despite its unique concepts and great graphics and sound, the very essence of what this game is supposed to be is failing. This game does a lot of things well, but being a baseball game isn’t one of them. If Midway were to iron out all the problems with the baseball segment of this game and add some depth to the fighting (make it like a Mortal Kombat fight), we’d have a real winner on our hands. Despite MLB 2003 Slugfest being a weak baseball game, you simply have to listen to the commentators, so it’s a good weekend rental.

Ok, so throughout this review I have done nothing but praise this game but you look at the bottom of this review and you see a score of 78. So what gives? There is one problem I have with the game and it’s a big one. With all of the features and fun that Slugfest has, the game has a problem with longevity. After you have unlocked all of the extras there really isn’t much else to play for. The Season and Team-by-Team modes become repetitive really fast. The omission of trades and roster moves takes away a lot from the Season mode. After about a week, the game starts to lose its appeal and only becomes enjoyable if you are playing against another person. MLB Slugfest is the type of game that is perfect for multiplayer games. However, if you play a lot of games against the computer, I suggest you rent this game before buying it.

The action is fun but it can grow tiresome after repeated plays. Tweaks are needed in the fielding (make outfields larger and have players move quickly from the start) and pitching (offer players more direct control).

Ridiculous! In fact, the more I played MLB Slugfest, the less I liked it. It may be better than many "normal" baseball games, but it could have been awesome.
