The world's most popular board game gets cubed.Plenty of OptionsDeveloper Runecraft keeps things fresh with a ton of gameplay options. For example, in the frantic Party Mode, all players take their turns simultaneously. You can customize the rules to limit the number of houses, eliminate double rent when one property in a monopoly is mortgaged, deal some or all of the properties at game's start, manage auctions, designate a Free Parking jackpot, change the rules for calculating income tax and more. You can also default to the official US or UK rules and replace dollars with euros. There's no option for screen text to replace the announcer, but after your first game you won't need his guidance. You can choose one to three computer-controlled rivals, setting each one's AI at easy, normal or hard.Bonus BoardsMonopoly Party has the classic Atlantic City board, plus four bonus boards:• Ancient Monuments • Prehistoric • Fantasy • Sci-FiAll come with unique pawns and building styles, such as a Phoenician sailing ship and a Greek temple in Ancient Monuments. Boardwalk becomes Milky Way in Sci-Fi, Nero Avenue in Ancient Monuments, King Arthur Street in Fantasy and Tyrannosaurus Rex Avenue in Prehistoric. The boards tend to reuse the same basic animations, only changing the art, so that the dragon fluttering about the Fantasy board becomes a pteranadon on the Prehistoric board.VisualsMonopoly Party arbitrarily chooses one of two camera views: either a three-quarters overhead view or a low camera that pans with the moving pawns. The drawback here is that you can't check out a rival's holdings with a quick glance. Presentation is straightforward, although trades are initially confusing.Perhaps recognizing that a property like Monopoly doesn’t really lend itself to a lot of eye candy, developer Runecraft took an unflashy approach to designing the graphics. The Nintendo GameCube's great capacity for cool lighting effects isn't exploited, particularly on the Sci-Fi board. You can turn off the stiff animations of the pawns and the background figures. You can select from a handful of music tracks in various genres, including funk, rock and electronica. A muddy mix makes it difficult to make out the sound effects, which must have been tough to figure out in the first place. Just what sound does an ancient vase make when it hops?Monopoly Party saves records, but you can’t save a game in progress.Bottom LineThe bottom line -- that's what Monopoly is all about, isn't it? Monopoly Party gives you an accurate sim of the boardgame with just about all the rules options you can think of. The extra boards are fun, even if they don't add anything in terms of gameplay. Configurable AI makes this disc particularly good for brushing up on your Monopoly skills.
