Freedom Unite is a huge game, and, naturally, a little intimidating. But not only are you getting the best installment of the Monster Hunter franchise so far (though Monster Hunter 3 will no doubt be just as grand), you're getting an enormous action RPG that gives you a lot in return for putting a lot in. And it can potentially keep you attached to your PSP longer than you ever thought.

Capcom claims there’s around 500 hours of gameplay in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, and we’re inclined to agree. It’s deep, it’s addictive, and it’s even better with friends — just don’t be surprised when it kicks your arse.

All together, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is a great upgrade for Freedom 2, and having the ability to take Felyne's into combat is a nice addition for those stuck with solo play. The additional monsters are very cool to check out, even if I have a bit before encountering a good chunk of them, and I'm sure the additional quests will add quite a few more hours for those that have thoroughly explored the previous release. Definitely a PSP title worth checking out, and I'd say you could give this one a blind buy if you want.

In short: if you’re expecting a quick thrill here, you won’t find it. Freedom Unite is for those who wish to master new skills with patience and hard work. It can be tough to get going, but Freedom Unite won’t disappoint anyone who spends some quality time with it.

There are also some people who will simply never enjoy this type of game, but I expect those of you so opposed already know your gaming tastes don't lean this way. These small issues aside, Freedom Unite is an excellent Monster Hunter title, and it's certainly the place to start if you're new to the series but have been meaning to give it a go.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is certainly no revolution within the series but if you liked its predecessors you'll certainly be able to enjoy this newest part.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite est bien plus qu’une mise à jour grâce à ses nombreuses nouveautés. Pour les non-initiés, c'est l'occasion de découvrir un titre à la fois complet, riche et subtil.

Ultimately, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is a solid revision of Monster Hunter Freedom 2. The new monsters, weapons, quests and general tweaks (item stacking and an improved shopping system are a much-needed relief) ensure it's the definitive version of the game, but the inability to address the game's most crippling problem - the lack of an online mode - will likely ensure that the game, once again, fails to have a significant impact on the European market. A shame considering Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is one of the most exhaustive, expansive and compelling RPG experiences on the market.

Yes, I'm being hard on Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, but it's only because the base game is so good that I expect a lot out of the series. Setting out to conquer Priscines and steal their livers is challenging, taking a bunch of ore and suping-up your armor is fun, and having one game that you can feasibly sink 500 hours into is exciting. I don't understand why you'd churn out this carbon copy of a game -- especially when the series is having trouble catching on in the states like it has in Japan -- but the fact that it's well worn territory doesn't stop it from being an impressive title. ...I have to point out that Unite offers welcome improvements (the game install, the ability to stack items in your box, and new monsters) but is pretty much the exact same experience people were playing two years ago. If you've never picked up a Monster Hunter before, feel free to get excited about Unite, but if you were on the fence about the last one, don't look for salvation here.

That's a very big if, and while it's one that many longtime Monster Hunter fans are sure to satisfy, others might not be so patient. Yes, the improvements made here are much appreciated, as well as a decent start to enhancing Monster Hunter's playability (which is an important distinction from simply making it "easier"). But the series still has a few hurdles to clear before everyone who's interested can enjoy all the content it has to offer, and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite simply hasn't made those jumps yet.
