Monty Python's Flying Circus

Oh, wow! Groovy! Intro time, and what have I got to review? Only Virgin Mastertronic's fabby new Monty Python's Flying Circus! Yeah! (Hey, why don't I start off by 'quoting' loads of really, really funny bits from all those wacky and way-out Python sketches, eh? Here's one. "This parrot is dead." Ha ha ha! Creases me up every time. And how about "I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay, I sleep all night and I work all day"? Ppppffffffff!! Hahahahaha! Oops! I think I just wet my boxer shorts! Ahem. Actually, there's a very good reason why I'm not going to start off like that - I hate Monty Python jokes.)

It would have been all too easy to just bang out a bog-standard platform game with a few Python-related characters bouncing about and rely on the name to shift units. Core have done a surprisingly good job in translating the feel of the Python gang’s humour to the Amiga, from the superb graphics to the occasional intermissions, where an obscure off-the-wall gag appears. Behind the impressive appearance, the game itself is also rather playable, which means that those unfamiliar with Python humour can get into the gameplay. In fact, there is only one thing wrong with the game... you don’t get wafers with it.

Monty Python is a good piece of entertainment. It is one of the few games where you will actually try laughing at yourself is a cathartic experience, and we do not do enough of it in this industry. My only complaint is that the game is a bit on the difficult side. If it were a normal arcade game, I might say it was a bit easy, but trying to concentrate on reaching the end of the level when falling off your chair with laughter is bound to loose a number of lives.

Of all the absurd games I've played, this one feels most naturally absurd. It will put a smile on anybody's face, wether they are old Monty Python fans, someone who likes a laugh, gamers and museum curators.

Identical to the Amiga version in all respects so the same comments apply. Monty Python doesn't seem to be a game as such, more like a collection of jokes that makes you ant to play on to see the next gag.

Fans of the series will love it, but the rest of you will probably get a little tired of the rather basic gameplay after a while.

The game has three strengths: the graphics, the sound and the comedy. Visually, the game is almost perfect. All sprites are spot on when it comes to capturing Terry Gilliam’s distinctive look, but some of the backdrops are a little bland. The sound effects range from the unusual to the disgusting. Hear Gumby emit large belches upon eating spam. Chucle to John Cleese arguing with you in the Ministry of Pointless Arguments. Best of all is the end of the level, where are mad charlady reads off the list of goodies you have collected in a horrible high pitched voice. Sadly, the humour flags. The game is not impressive enough to stand on its own. After a couple of runs through the first level, I soon found myself getting bored and, after you complete the game, I cannot see anybody ever going back and replaying it. A good trip down memory lane, and worth playing if you are a true Pythonite, but to be honest I cannot really see the point in buying it.

Similar graphics to Amiga, and pretty colourful too. However, it's exactly the same game, but the speech is missing, which was a pretty major point of the 16 bit versions.

'Cartoon' intermission screens, brief sketches and interlevel Argument game. Both sprites and backgrounds are authentic Python but this means the latter are dully coloured. Scrolling is a touch jerky. Passable rendition of TV title music, a few silly sound effects and some amusing if unclear vocal samples. Sketches and cartoons add interest to the basic shoot-'em-up gameplay. More challenging than the 64 version and the Argument Sketch adds a little variety. Ultimately a small, repetitive game.

An schrägem Humor herrscht wahrlich kein Mangel, so findet sich z.B. de Spieler mit den wenigsten Punkte an der Spitze der Highscoreliste wieder. Die Grafik im bekannten Monty Pythons-Stil ist hübsch animiert, dazu gibt es lustige Zwischensequenzen, einen klasse umgesetzten Original-Soundtrack, sowie originelle FX. Daß das Scrolling leicht ruckelt und die Farben ein bißchen blaß sind, ließe sich also locker verschmerzen, wenn spielerisch etwas mehr geboten wäre. Nur leider wimmelt es von unfairen Stellen, und die Steuerung ist auch alles andere als genau. Kennt man die Gags erstmal, wird es daher bald langweilig. Schade, denn witzig ist die Sache wirklich – nicht nur für Gehirnamputierte...

Some genuinely funny humour; captures the style of the TV show without just rehashing it. Basic gameplay is pretty, erm, basic. Still fun after you've seen all the jokes.

Übrig bleibt ein recht kurioses Spiel für Python-Fans; Otto Normalspieler wird nicht so begeistert sein.
