Having played Street Fighter on most formats I almost wept with frustration when I saw how US Gold butchered the Amiga version. So, it was with a heavy and skeptical heart that I approached Mortal. I couldn't have been more wrong. Probe may have taken their time but it's paid off. Mortal Kombat is a dream come true – a good arcade conversion. This game will set the standards for Amiga beat 'em ups for some time to come.

A splendid beat 'em up that is almost, but not quite, Ribena.

Mortal in the arcade was a top game. The Amiga version maintains this high level of quality for what is, without doubt, the ultimate Amiga beat 'em up.

Mortal Kombat rivals Team 17's Body Blows in looks, sound and style. It's playable. It's addictive. It's worth every penny. Buy it or be forever sad!

Mortal Kombat is, in my opinion, the best beat-'em-up money can buy on the Amiga. It scrapes ahead of Body Blows for playability and amount of characters and moves, and knocks Streetfighter II into a cocked hat. The Probe Dream Factory has done it again - hurrah!

h no. Why me? I hate beat-‘em-ups, and I hate Mortal Kombat in particular. I played it on the SNES, and laughed pityingly at the lack of blood and gore, the entire hook that the game hangs itself on. I played it on the Mega Drive, and sneered haughtily at the way I completed the entire thing on my first go on the third difficulty setting by only using one move. And now I have got to play it on the Amiga, with a load of disk accessing on top of everything else.
Now, if you are a smart kind of reader, you will have realised that no-one starts off a review of Mortal Kombat (a beat-‘em-up) with something like ‘I hate beat-‘em-ups, and I hate Mortal Kombat in particular’unless they are pretty swiftly going to follow it up with “… but what a surprise – it is really great!” We are not completely stupid, And so it is with Mortal Kombat, more or less. Against all my better judgement and all my previous and entirely valid opinions, I had a really good time playing Amiga Mortal Kombat.

But despite such problems and disappointments, the game looks and sounds better than either 16-bit cartridge version and is the closest thing to the arcade you're going to get on a home system.

Despite these faults, the DOS version of Mortal Kombat is a game that pulls off an arcade port rather well. It's clear that some areas got more attention than others, but it still got a lot right overall. I can't help but think that this port could have been virtually arcade perfect with a little more work and memory. Some of the things that drag it down a bit are easily fixed, but for one reason or another, they weren't addressed. Despite those shortcomings, if you're a fan of the arcade original, you'll probably have some fun with this port.

Some of the fatalities here are a lot of fun to watch, but you have to hit some pretty complicated button combinations to get them to work. Besides the blood, this game has a few other things going for it. Unlike Street Fighter, these fighters were created from digitized images, so they look more realistic. Instead of moving the joystick back to block, there's a special button for that purpose (the Start button). The boss, Goro, is a hulking, four-armed monster. Mortal Kombat is fun to play, but a bit stiff compared to Street Fighter 2. The seven fighters each have a handful of special moves, and the background graphics have a dark, medieval look that's very appealing. The voice synthesis is pretty bad (typical of the Genesis), but the music is outstanding. The SNES version looked sharper, but Mortal Kombat with no blood is like watching a slasher flick edited for TV. What's the point?

AmigaAmiga Format
Despite the overwhelming possibility of moves, you soon discover the same couple of punches and sweeping kicks that can be used to sap your opponent’s strength. You also do not get the same variety of moves across different characters. They all seem to do the same kicks and punches and even the special moves are remarkably similar. Mortal’s characters just do not have enough personality to pull you in.

M.K. is still a solid action game, but the CD version makes so little attempt to take advantage of it's increased memory and technology that it's dissatisfying. Maybe it was the eight-month wait between versions that led me to expect something more impressive. So should you shell out for the expensive system and the CD version? Absolutely not.

Aside from the improvement in sound, MK CD really offers nothing new (save access time). Still, those who love the game will probably want to get this --- just don't expect too much.

Blood, death, and blood. That about sums up this translation of '93s hottest battle. Gameplay and sound severly suffer on this version, although the graphics are definently there. If you play Mortal for the gore, there is no other way to go. It says something to watch as your friend's charater goes plummeting into the pit covered with blood. All in all, a great translation.

If you absolutely adore Mortal Kombat or just need a fighting game for your Sega CD and don't mind the lack of CD features then go right ahead. The control is intact and playable, the characters are well represented, and the blood and fatalities remain unhindered, unlike the SNES version.

In closing Mortal Kombat on the Genesis is/was a great arcade port, one of many games that help Sega stay ahead of Nintendo. While the sequels do overshadow it, Mortal Kombat still provides a good fighting gaming session.

Control is not as responsive as it could be, and trying to execute certain special moves (like Sub Zero's Deep Freeze) is problematic. Still, I found the gameplay to be similar to the arcade game and fairly enjoyable overall. The best part is the tournament mode, where you dispatch a parade of increasingly difficult foes en route to facing the huge four-armed boss, Goro. There are three skill levels and six playable fighters: Johnny Cage, Lui Kang, Rayden, Scorpion, Sub Zero, and Sonya (Kano is missing).

C'mon, you know what this game is. I really shouldn't have to write anything about the first MK, since anyone reading this review likely knows every single thing about it already. It's the one the news media demonized, moms feared, Senator Lieberman used to further his own political career, and people with level heads and an ounce of sense took as just another fighting game.

SEGA CDElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Maybe I'm just spoiled by Mortal Kombat II, but this game has lost it's appeal. The game really shows it's age in a time of graphically impressive games. On the brighter side, the music and voices are good as are the character animations, but the lag time, although short, will probably drive you nuts after a while. By the way, those are nice Super NES pictures in the commercial. Who let that slip by?

If you already own the cartridge version, there aren't many reasons to purchase Mortal Kombat for the Sega CD. The "loading" time completely slows down any momentum you may have built up during the game. There are even slight delays during the game action: When performing a fatality, you have to wait for the game to load the fatality animation from the CD! Luckily, the arcade-quality music and sound effects are excellent; they save the game from being a total loss.

I don't know if there was a market or not, but I can tell you that Mortal Kombat comes to the Master System in relatively good form. I know it seems like an oxymoron, but while this version isn't as strong as the 16-bit counterparts, it still manages to recreate the game moderately well. It's not perfect and you shouldn't choose this over other versions, but it's far from being the worst Mortal Kombat game of all time.

Some people will have you believe that Mortal Kombat is the new "king of beat 'em ups", but that distinction is definitely held by Street Fighter II Turbo, whose variety and sheer playability far outstrips Mortal Kombat's limited appeal.

While Midway Games was programming the Sega CD version of the arcade powerhouse Mortal Kombat, the publisher, Acclaim, promised the result would be “bigger,” “better,” “louder” and “meaner” than any of the other home versions available. What they finally heaped on violence-starved customers was essentially the old Genesis version with a CD-quality soundtrack.

It will take weeks for the average gamer to stumble past the graphical limitations imposed by the Game Boy, and longer still to master the special moves - if at all! If you're after a portable beat 'em up, your best bet's Raging Fighter, a simpler and ultimately more successful slap-about.

SNESThe Video Game Critic
A one-on-one 2D fighter, Mortal Kombat was the first true competitor to Street Fighter II. Sporting digitized fighters, dark medieval backdrops, and excessive gore, this game really took fighting games to a whole new level. Unfortunately, there was such an uproar from parents about the blood and fatalities that Nintendo made the poor decision to leave the gore out of this cartridge. Apparently Nintendo thought it was more important to preserve their squeaky clean image than sell games, so they used white "sweat" instead of blood. Predictably, the bloody Genesis version sold a hell of a lot more copies. Even so, it's hard to argue that the graphics and sound in this version are far superior to the Genesis version. The gameplay is about equal, although some claim the Genesis has better control. Personally, I find it hard to play a Mortal Kombat game without the blood.

If you need your fighting game fix on the go, check out either Fatal Fury Special or Samurai Shodown on the Game Gear. Both games are light years ahead of this failed attempt. Then again, if the need arises to rip someone's head off while away from home, this probably could pass in an emergency situation. Finally, like it's Genesis cousin, blood is included, though it's not exactly prevalent.

In the end, I ended up buying the PC version. I just wasn't satisfied enough with the disappointing SNES version, and that's not even taking into account the gore factor. If you were a SNES-only owner, it was a good game to keep around... but once you had access to the other home versions, you'd probably never touch it again.

SEGA CDDigital Press - Classic Video Games
I rarely have a problem with CD enhanced versions of cartridge-based games. Usually the sound enhancements and additional space (used properly) make it a worthwhile investment. Not only was the (better) sequel already out when this one found its way to store shelves, but the overall product is a miserable attempt to cash in on the fans love of the series. Stick with the cart.

It takes about 8 seconds to load a match, and while that's tolerable, it's still 8 seconds longer than you had to wait for the Genesis version. Harder to forgive is the fact that the disk is sometimes accessed DURING BATTLE, resulting in noticeable pauses that interrupt the action. A major disappointment, you'll probably want to avoid this ill-conceived version of Mortal Kombat.

SEGA CDDefunct Games
As it is there really is no reason to own the CD version of this game. The game play is exactly the same as it is on the Genesis, the graphics are the same, and there is nothing new or extra here to warrant the purchase. Worse yet, since the Genesis version doesn't have load times and isn't a step down in quality it's actually the better deal. I feel bad for anybody who decided to wait for this Sega CD version, but needless to say if you buy this on CD you are a sucker. Stick with the Genesis port, this Sega CD version is easily one of the most unnecessary games of all time.

This game just doesn't fulfill the expectations for CD owners, fight fans or MK fans. If you have a Genesis and a Sega CD, there's no reason to buy this game. Just get the cartridge and you're doing all right. If you go into this one looking for some entertaining action and CD-quality graphics and sound, you'll feel Mortally wounded.
