PlayStation 2The Video Game Critic
I love the Motorstorm games for the PS3, but when I heard that this "winter" edition had been relegated to the PS2/PSP platforms, I was expecting a watered-down experience. That's not the case! In fact, in many ways Arctic Edge is even more fun than its PS3 predecessors! Yes, the graphics are less detailed and the physics is less accurate, but this game has an arcade quality the others lack. The tracks are easier to navigate and the controls are forgiving, minimizing the frustration factor.
Motorstorm: Arctic Edge is a smooth driving off-road racer, and one of the most fun offerings when it comes to arcade racers on the PSP. While there are some foibles here and there, it's still worth a look if you're a PSP owner looking for a fun and addictive arcade racer to take on the move.
Unexpectedly brilliant, then, Motorstorm: Arctic Edge is an extremely likeable addition to the Motorstorm family, which provides a hectic racing experience that will get the blood pumping through your veins. Vehicles may not handle perfectly, and certain courses are not entirely effective, but for the majority of time spent playing Arctic Edge, it’s hard not to be taken for one of the most aggressive and entertaining rides of the year.
It's a testament to Arctic Edge's intricate tracks and energetic racing that its notable problems are so easy to overlook. Aside from its online issues, this is what you'd expect from a MotorStorm game in portable form, and the multifaceted courses and vehicle variety provide plenty of reasons to keep returning, even after you've completed the Festival. If you want to kick up some snow and dirt, this is a fun way to do it.
Arctic Edge is a good portable racer, but I didn't find the tracks varied enough to keep my attention for more than a few minutes at a time. But hey, with an arcade-style racer like this, that's pretty much all you need -- and at least it's not costing you quarters each time.
