Anyone who likes a puzzle that hurts your strategic core would do all right to invest in Mr. Driller 2. What it lacks in cutting-edge technology, it makes up for in intensity and difficulty. This is not a game you can knock down in a few hours, nor is it something to hand Little Jimmy the Screaming Brat on a long car trip. It'll certainly pay out a few times over, given the randomly generated levels and tight constraints. Sadly, once you've been through the few levels, there's not much to be seen in the land of Sosumu and The Blocks. I'd suggest that anyone take at least one pass at Sosumu's Blocky Adventure — if you can rent it, do so, or buy it at the bargain bin $20 price — you certainly won't regret it while it lasts.

Mr. Driller 2 is worth owning simply because the core game is fun and challenging. However, if aspects like graphics, audio, and variety of play modes matter to you, you may want to pass on it.

These elements are appealing to casual players, gamers who probably won't beat the standard stages very quickly. By the time they're ready to take on the endless mode, most casual players will have likely invested a month or two's worth of time in the game. Hardcore players will get to that point in under a week (if you're really diligent, you could beat this game in less than half a day. It's less than two hours long, but the time spent dying brings it up a bit).

It looks great, sounds okay, and offers a nice package of gameplay options, but it's still the same old Mr. Driller design. That might be up some folks' alley who've played the game since its debut in arcades more than a half-decade ago, but for me, I'll never play Mr. Driller 2 again once this review is finished being typed. And...we're done.

Namco seems to be interested in revitalizing the Driller brand in the US, but ports of incredibly dated games are a poor way to go about it. Even as a fan of Mr. Driller, and as someone who has spent an inordinate amount of time with this particular installment of the series, I can't possibly recommend Mr. Driller 2 even to diehard fans. Go pick up Drill Spirits. Driller 2 would have been a must-have back in its time, but now it's a mere also-ran.

As much as I love this series, I can't really recommend Mr. Driller 2 unless you only have a GBA or are a hardcore Driller fan (although in that case, you probably imported this game four years ago). Shame on Namco for sitting on this game for so long and letting it grow stale. How about making it up to U.S. gamers by quickly releasing Mr. Driller: Drill Land for GameCube? All will immediately be forgiven.
