Celebrity Deathmatch is a difficult game to judge. It’s not a very good wrestling game nor is it an excellent fighting game. But it is functional and fans of the series will love it. Best of all, it is only $20.

Maybe the developer and producer wanted a short single player game to get people headed right into the “meaty pulp” of the game. Maybe not – who knows. At least it's a budget title. Good night, good fight!

Overall, this game requires a lot of work in order to become a really popular game. As I mentioned before, the characters lack moves and the ability to leave the ring, and the game may be more enjoyable with these added components. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for, and does it ever apply here. If the game developers were to release another version, I truly hope that they actually watch episodes of Celebrity Deathmatch and make it so that the matches can be almost identical to those episodes. Amazingly, simple controls aren't the only requirement for a successful game. Check out Winning Eleven, which has insane button combinations but is an extremely intense and enjoyable game. As far as this game goes, however, I would definitely stay away.

When there is a sequel (if that ever happens), I’d like to see more substance and less hopeful wishing on Big Ape Producutions’ part that gamers will buy Celebrity Deathmatch simply because of its MTV brand.

MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch is a mess from top to bottom. The jokes are rarely ever funny, the gameplay is a veritable smorgasbord of repetitive and boring action, and the underwhelming graphics and sound don't help matters. If you're a fan of the TV program, you may find Celebrity Deathmatch amusing for the 20 minutes it takes to see every single gag in the game once, and even that might be a bit of a stretch. As for anyone else, stay as far away from Celebrity Deathmatch as is humanly possible.

It's fun for brief intervals, and might make a half-decent party game for gore-loving button-mashers. But in time the simple, juvenile gameplay will grow old. This is the kind of stuff that teen and adult gamers picked up when they were kids. Because this game is rated M, you can't use the kid excuse here. Kids aren't supposed to be playing it. The target audience is adults, and adults are not going want it.

The game had a lot of potential. However, I think the scope of the show was just too big to put it in the game. I have to say Gotham Games put a great effort to make a game based on the show. However, interest is waning from the show since it’s no longer airing on MTV. It’s too little, too late in the coming.

Celebrity Deathmatch isn't a game you will be playing for hours, days and weeks on end, but instead one of those you'll pull out along with the dance mat for drunken parties. The sarcastic and dirty humour will last long into the night and your mates will be fighting over a chance to slaughter Jerry Springer and Justin Timberlake. Treat as party fodder; one that will be dipped into now and then.

I can only guess what CDM could have been if done with a larger budget. What I found most disappointing was the loss of the claymation feel and the sense of personality of each celebrity--in other words, the elements that make the TV show so memorable. This might have been bearable if combat was interesting and if you couldn't whip through the entire single-player game at video arcade speeds. I know games with longer learning curves than the entire play time of CDM. I wouldn't recommend picking this up unless you're a determined Celebrity Deathmatch collector.

The premise is a simple one: “Hey, let’s take a bunch of famous people, make clay models out of them and then have them beat the crap out of each other mercilessly!” Such is the basic concept behind Celebrity Deathmatch, a show that gained a pretty impressive following on MTV. Now, Gotham Games has finally put together a game based on the TV show. Unfortunately the gameplay is extremely bad, being too repetitive, too shallow and too short. Celebrity Deathmatch is an empty fighter that won’t grab your attention, let alone hold it for very long.

XboxGame Chronicles
Unless you are an extreme fan of the original series or have low expectations from your fighting games, just stay away from MTV’s Celebrity Deathmatch. There is no challenging gameplay to speak of, and the only real joy you ever get is witnessing the wacky ways to kill each other. You can have just as much fun watching the show and save your Xbox for a real game.

PlayStation 2VGNZ
MTV Celebrity Deathmatch is a poor game by all accounts. Even if you like the TV series and find over-the-top violence and gore amusing, I still can’t promise that you would like this game. In an era with the various WWE titles for the PS2, MTV Celebrity Deathmatch is laughable. Pathetic even. Unless you’re looking for a quick laugh, avoid this game.

XboxNetjak
Is this a sign that MTV concept videogames should never be produced? Perhaps, or maybe Gotham Games decided to develop a (piss-poor) game and quickly cash in on the success of the series. Well, if they wanted to cash in on the success of the show; they were a few years off since Celebrity Deathmatch hasn’t been shown on MTV in close to two years. It seems that they tried so hard to pull it up from becoming a bad title, but perhaps it was just doomed to fail in the first place no matter what development team made it. I’m sure that if you play with the right people, multiplayer can bring some entertainment, but if you are looking for a title with staying power, a plethora of unlockables and an actual challenge factor, look some place else.

We can only imagine what Celebrity Deathmatch could have been if it was done with a larger budget and a more refined gameplay engine. But not only did it skip over the elements that make the TV show so memorable in terms of its presentation, but it wasn't much fun to play either. In short, CDM isn't worth your time in the least -- leave it in the bargain bins where you'll find it.

The game can be fun to have around for a quick two-player fight but once you seen all the moves and heard all the clever dialogue even that becomes dull. Unlike in other silly action games like Super Smash Brothers where it’s still possible to fight up to four players at once, Celebrity Deathmatch you to fight the computer or a friend and that’s it. MTV’s Celebrity Deathmatch makes an excellent rental especially if you’re a fan of one or more celebrities here but if you’re looking for in-depth fighter with tons of replay value, you won’t find it in this Deathmatch that’s for sure.

PlayStation 2Game Chronicles
Celebrity Deathmatch is by no means a stellar game, I’d be hard pressed to even call it average. It reeks of “shovel-ware,” a game that was stripped of both function and price then sent to retailers in the hopes of turning a quick buck. The gameplay is shallow and often needlessly frustrating, with few attacks really being entertaining, but most lacking any sort of humorous overtone. The sound effects and voiceovers are good, but the presentation of the program is what is truly remarkable. The graphics perfectly capture the feel of the show. The show however, was entertaining, often hilarious, and didn’t require any sort of controller or console to fully enjoy it.

XboxTeamXbox
When a game comes along that is so narrowly directed at a target audience, that group will usually find some enjoyment with the game. However, I would say it would take an absolute, live and breathe Celebrity Dethamtch fan to warrant a purchase of this title. Otherwise, the outdated and unfunny jokes, horrible fighting engine, and lackluster visuals and sound make this a game that could have been, but never will. Stay very far away.
33
PlayStation 2Gamezilla
For some reason the game doesn’t use the claymation style of the show and instead went with a bland cartoon look that manages to suck what little soul this game might have had right out of the box. Playing MTV’s Celebrity Deathmatch is like watching a bad episode of the show and owning it is like watching that same episode over and over and over and over again. I think I’ll pass.

So by now, you're probably asking yourself, "Should I still buy a copy of Celebrity Deathmatch?" If you're looking for a game with tons of depth, then no. If you're looking for a game with replayability, then no. If you're looking for a game with jaw-dropping visuals and topic-notch audio, then no. But if you're looking for a poorly-assembled gimmick of a game that serves as a friendly reminder of the good ol' Celebrity Deathmatch days on MTV, all for a discounted price of $19.99, then CD just might be for you. If you're not looking for authenticity, though, stay far, far away from this one.

Gotham Games went over its budget and delayed the release to fix many "bugs." They foresaw disappointment in the lack of characters so they stuck it with a $19.99 price tag. Unfortunately that would still be ripping you off.

Know anyone that you don’t really like, but still have to buy the occasional present for? Get ‘em this! You’ll never get invited to his/her birthday party again. Who in their right mind would enjoy a lame "funny" fighter filled with washed-up "stars," pitiful graphics, and craptacular controls? No one, that’s who. There are a lot of poor fighting games out there, but few are this shallow or boring. I’d bet money that not a single "celebrity" who appeared in this game would even accept a free copy. Except maybe Carrot Top.

There’s a lot to get excited over here. You can create your own…oh wait, that sucks. You unlock…monsters? That’s lame. Well, at least the special moves…blow? Sarcasm aside, I wouldn’t burn this game for warmth if a vat of dry ice got dumped on my head. It’s better than Simpsons Wrestling and features lots of gore and lowbrow humor, but that’s about it. If there’s ever a Developer Deathmatch game, I volunteer the people who made this crap.

This button masher is not so much a game as an opportunity to become deeply familiar with your computer's J key. Although a variety of attacks are available to your character, it makes little difference which on you choose. For $20, you could probably hire Miss Cleo and Shannen Doherty to wage a battle to the death in your own backyard. Why bother with an imitation?

Unless you are a rabid MTV Celebrity Deathmatch “fan”, you would be doing a great disservice to your wallet for buying this game. The $20 price point offers Celebrity Deathmatch no excuse for the slapdash piece of software that it is. The game is insultingly easy, offers little play value (forget about replay), and ultimately is simply not entertaining. If you are really that curious, or highly intoxicated, do not do anything else but rent it. Even better, watch reruns of the show. You will have a lot more fun for a fraction of the cost.

Celebrity Deathmatch is inadequate in every department. Graphically it's poor, in terms of gameplay it's poor and in terms of longevity it's abysmal. The game desperately needs better gameplay mechanics. The fact that the game doesn't provide any challenge and can be finished in under 2 hours is horrid, especially when you pay almost £30 for the priviledge. If you are interested then make sure you rent it first. It's not always easy to say which is the best game of the year but it's cinch as to what is the worst game of 2003 and that award has to go to Celebrity Deathmatch.

I would say "there's little to recommend here" if there was anything at all to recommend. It's rare to find a title that is so inadequately presented and so fundamentally flawed. I'm sure the goal here was to create a piece of pop culture fluff, and in that, it succeeds too well. It brings to mind other inadvertent Celebrity Deathmatch situations, like Gigli. And the response gamers should have to this title is the same that moviegoers have already said about the whole Affleck-Lopez mess: Avoid, avoid, avoid!

Worst of all, this is a fighting game in which the fighting is neither exciting nor funny. The controls are a wreck, whether you’re playing using a keyboard or a gamepad — and even when you master the combos, they do nothing more than trigger the special attacks. If you’re imagining the total freedom that the show’s combatants enjoy, forget it: here, you’re on a dual-axis rail, flailing like a Rock ’Em Sock ’Em robot. As a huge fan of both fighting games and the MTV show, let me be the first to tell you that this game fails utterly at capturing the spirit of either.

Besides the two seconds of fatality joy, the only other redeeming quality of this game is its price. Major retail outlets tag it at about $20. That's still about $19 overpriced, but at least they're not trying to pretend this decorative coaster is anything else. According to an actual line from the game, "There's nothing you can do to stop it, except turn it off." I couldn't agree more.

This is a lifeless corpse of a game. I'm giving it five per cent more than I should because Mr T is in it (and in any sane world all games would have Mr T in them). But be warned: even limited exposure to this atrocity will numb your soul for evermore.

While Soul Calibur II-style move sets and an expansive career mode wasn't on the list of expectations upon booting Celebrity Deathmatch, it is still surprising to me how little gameplay has been compressed onto a single DVD. Lacking the excitement, humor, and creativity of the infamous TV show, Celebrity Deathmatch isn't even recommendable as a rental to fans.
