In two years Pom Pom has created two of the best independently created video games ever released. We can only hope that they earn enough from these games to keep them going in the world of independent games. Without a doubt Mutant Storm is worth your money and it will suck hours away from you in great quantity...but anyone who has played this game well tell you - it is well worth every lost moment.

Minor quibbles aside, Mutant Storm is as close to perfect an arcade game as I've seen. The game is engaging, controls are intuitive, and it's very easy on the eyes. The challenge level ramps up perfectly from level to level, and new varieties of enemy appear at just the right pace. The best part is that the game always feels fair. There's a way out of any situation, if only the player can react fast enough to make it work and is smart enough to see it. Mutant Storm is a brilliant game, a justification of the Xbox Live Arcade concept, and a worthwhile addition to any gamer's library.

Pom Pom know what they're doing. Just like Freeverse Software takes card games we've seen a hundred times over and distinguishes them with personality and visuals, so does Pom Pom with classic arcade games. I hope this becomes a trend with them. Without thinking, I could name off a dozen games that would be amazing if given the Pom Pom treatment, so hopefully we'll see at least one of them next year. In the meantime, Mutant Storm is certainly enough to keep the arcade gamer happy. It's fun to look at and fun to play.

So what does it all add up to? While having a few shortcomings, overall Mutant Storm is a terrific game. No stability problems that I could see in my playing, and the developers seem committed to improving the game (they’ve already added a two-player mode that you can try out, changed the game to fix bugs and make improvements and they welcome comments and suggestions for future updates). With the magnificent 3D graphics and hang-on-to-your seat gameplay, I highly recommend you grab the demo of the game and try it out. Just make sure you practice a bit, since you’re going to need it.

If I said it once, I'll say it again, Mutant Storm is an awesome piece of software. It has given me a whole new outlook at what a $20 shareware game is capable of doing. The gameplay is highly, no, incredibly addictive, and will last for years to come. The graphics are an incredible feat in gaming period, and the sound helps bring you back to the good old days, before you got your job, married someone, and had kids, and had only one undying passion: to play video games. I urge you, buy this game. I am truly beyond words regarding its excellence. Try the 9 level demo if you're hesitant, but if you can spare the cash, the $20 price tag is one of the greatest money deals you're ever going to get in a lifetime. Pom Pom as a game developer looks to be a very promising find, and I look forward to seeing what incredible things they'll come out with next.

Like Smash TV and Robotron, MS utilizes the two-stick method, which means one stick controls your movement while the other controls your direction of fire. Don’t worry if you don’t have a gamepad with two directional pads; MS can be configured to work with the keyboard or keyboard/mouse.

If you have ever played any of the arcade games I mentioned above then go download this game immediately. If you have a dual analog gamepad then download this game immediately. This is one of those rare pieces of software that doesn’t commandeer a major portion of your system or your life. You can sneak in a quick game at lunch, or whenever you have a free 10-30 minutes. As addictive as crack and as hallucinogenic as LSD, you might need some rehab after a few weeks of Mutant Storm.

Simplicity is the key factor here. There’s almost nothing to the gameplay except moving and shooting. For any other game this may very well be a downfall, but for Mutant Storm, this suits things perfectly. Levels start off easy enough, but quickly become fast and frantic battles for survival, and getting all they way through to the 89th level will require some seriously ninja skills. If you want a game that doesn’t tax the brain, but gives your trigger finger and reflexes a major workout, then you should definitely grab this. Oh, and it’s only a fiver…

If you're looking for a game evocative of Robotron: 2084 that's been thoroughly updated for the new millennium, look no further than PomPom Games' Mutant Storm.

As mentioned several times, Mutant Storm offers a classic gameplay environment. The fast paced action, good graphics, tight controls and classic gameplay will appeal to gamers looking for a solid gaming package. However, this is where Mutant Storm might disappoint new gamers. The game doesn’t offer a first person perspective or several different side quests to complete. The game is linear because it’s trying to be one thing, a shooter. Mutant Storm does what it should and will appeal to shooter fans looking for another challenge. Other gamers who have never tried a shooter before should give Mutant Storm a try as well.
