Being one of the most influential and popular games of all time, it's wonderful to see Myst brought back to life on a new platform for a new audience. You can't blow up Nazis or aliens, but if you've never tried one of adventure gaming's greatest classics then this remake of Myst is definitely a good place to start, even though it suffers slightly in being confined to its new portable home. Once again players have been kept from hosting memorials in honour of the point 'n' click genre and I wouldn't be surprised to see portable versions of the other Myst titles should this one do well enough. The original classic has certainly found firm footing with the PSP and if you're tired of all the action oriented games of today then Myst on the go is definitely a palatable and refreshingly different cocktail.

Myst on the PlayStation Portable is actually a good port, despite the load times and the occasional consternation with the controls. The refashioned visuals for the higher resolution widescreen look nice but without completely ditching the classic PC/Mac look, which has its charm; although, it would have been nice to have gotten realMyst instead. This game is slow and ponderous, but that is by design and a reason it feels rewarding to actually solve an age. Give it a go if you want to see what all of the hubbub was about in 1993 or if you appreciate retrogaming.

Overall, Myst is an unusual and unique game, and the DS should be grateful to be its host. However, it is also the kind of game many will find frustrating, dated, and confusing. Those who like Myst will love it, and those who do not will hate it. Its potential to amaze might be worth the gamble, but it is probably best left to players who enjoy the surreal, the off-key and the challenging.

How you react to this game very much depends on your relationship to the whole Myst franchise. Since it’s such a faithful port of the original classic, your response to the game could be anything from sweet nostalgia to OMG Not That Goddamn Space Ship Piano Puzzle Again. If you’re of a mind to revisit this singular game, having it in handheld form can be a fun way of re-experiencing it on the go. If you’re all Myst-ed out, this port probably won’t change your attitude.

If you're at all interested in puzzle games, you owe it to yourself to check out Myst. For those who've already played it, it's like taking a trip down memory lane... and stumbling over every stone in the path.

At its core, Myst is a wonderful chance to enter a world of mystery and intrigue, which has been meticulously filled out with an extensive history by its creators. The large amount of in-game text, challenging puzzles, and a requirement for note-taking makes the overall experience feel more like reading an interactive novel than playing a video game. For these reasons alone it is extremely difficult to recommend Myst to a particular group of people. You’ll either love it or you’ll find it mind-numbingly boring. Unfortunately, playing the DS version is more likely to result in you falling into the second category thanks to a series of problems and oversights that make the game even less accessible then it was back in the nineties.

As someone who has played Myst before and found it intriguing (if somewhat boring), the DS version holds up relatively well. There are some major pitfalls in the lighting and sound department, but for anyone who has played Myst before, these should not be intolerable impediments. It's a good game for the Myst veteran who wants to take it with them, but for anyone unfamiliar with the game, I would just suggest getting the PC version.

Myst for the DS is simply the same game that most of us have already played by now. The same game is here on the DS just simply shrunk down to the small screens. Old age just doesn’t fit Myst as well as it does other games from the same era.

Nintendo DSWorth Playing
For the dedicated, this nearly ancient game still holds a few charms. Myst can't survive in a modern market where everyone wants to satisfy their itchy trigger finger and drool over their high-definition Blu-rays, but it can still be a relaxing jaunt into another world. In many respects, the goal of Myst is to immerse you in another place and see what there is to see and enjoy what there is to enjoy. In that sense, it still succeeds among those willing to give it the time to do so — on a computer, not the DS.

It's a real shame that Myst doesn't take better advantage of the DS' abilities. If you've never played Myst before, and don't want to dig up an old PC copy, there might be reason for you to check this out, but expect to leave the game feeling more thankful at how far the adventure genre has progressed.

Nintendo DSPocket Gamer UK
Being one of the greatest adventure games of all time, Myst should have fitted in right alongside the above duo. But on the DS, it's not even close, so an experience that should be all about atmosphere leaves you feeling somewhat lacking.

Nintendo DSElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Once-stunning on the PC, it looks crude on the DS, with tiny, grainy images that aren't just eye-sores - they also make finding interactive elements a chore. This is a weak port that doesn't do Myst justice; it's not worth a revisit even for nostalgia.

Nintendo DSNintendo Front

The real crime is that Myst simply hasn’t aged well. It moves at a very slow pace, and the interface feels a bit clunky at times, especially when negotiating tight spaces (no, I wanted to look back, not to the side!). Myst’s descendants ultimately one-upped it at every turn. Riven (the sequel to Myst) improved almost every aspect of the game design, though the puzzles were harder.. The genre has since gone out of style due to its archaic trappings. But if you’re chomping at the bit to experience the granddaddy of first-person adventure games (and some would say, first person shooters), then I recommend finding Myst on any other system. The iPhone version is great. Just avoid this DS port, which makes Myst frustrating and ugly.

Nintendo DSGamekult

The original Myst deserves its place in video game history as being one of the most graphically advanced and innovative games of its time. However, the game simply does not hold up fifteen years later. Taking an obsolete game and giving it a second-rate DS port only makes the experience more painful. Not only did the developers of this game not fix any of the outdated issues the original Myst brought to the table, it added a few new problems. Had this game been given some kind of update (maybe one where the developers added, I don’t know, fun), things could have gone a lot better. As it stands, I’ll be happy if I never have to play this game again.

Nintendo DSIGN
It's time to let Myst die. It had it's run, and now it's time for the game to finally stop appearing everywhere. Even when it's free, Myst is barely worth playing, so charging $30 for a portable version is just ridiculous, especially since the port absolutely ruins the game. No amount of nostalgia can make this pixelated, boring, sorry excuse for an adventure fun.

Nintendo DSGamer 2.0
On the Macintosh, Myst was a love-hit-or-hate-it kind of game. It is a masterpiece to those who loved it. On the DS, it is a bland and nearly unplayable “game” that you’ll probably hate so much that you’d forget what love was. Even if you get used to the controls, there’s no guarantee you’ll have the desire to finish it unless you’re a dedicated Myst fan, but the DS version of Myst is so horribly made that even Myst fans will wonder why the hell they bought this game.

Nintendo DSCheat Code Central
In conclusion, Myst was a pre-millennium sensation that, for some unknown reason, keeps getting republished. Consequently, Myst DS is a game you have to avoid like eating Fritos before a first date. If you are intrigued by the concept of Myst, I implore you to pick it up for the PC. First of all, the PC version will only cost you about $10 rather than $30. Second, the world of Myst is actually nice to look at on a full-sized monitor. Third, with all the money you'll save you can pick up a point-and-click adventure that's actually cool, like Escape from Monkey Island, Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened, or Dracula Origin.

Nintendo DSGameSpot
As one last offering, this port includes the Rime age, which never made it into the original game. Taken from Real Myst--a reimagining of the original game in a real-time polygonal world--Rime is short, underwhelming and seems sloppily glued on as a hasty afterthought. Because Myst for the DS fails to take advantage of the stylus, mistreats the source material to the degree that it does, and offers very little to compensate, there's absolutely no reason to take this full-priced game over other versions of Myst or over any other adventure game on the DS.

Nintendo DSEurogamer.net (UK)
Even the staunchest of Myst fans can't deny that this is a pretty poor port. Despite being faithful to the original in sound effects and atmosphere, its glitches and lack of new, DS-specific functions ultimately inhibit its worth. That said, while Myst may be an inherently awful game, I've always thought it to be one of those games it's essential to experience first-hand for an education in the evolution of gaming. Its influence is still felt today, for better or worse. Don't bother with this version, though (or even the better-looking PSP one) - you can play the fully-3D update, RealMyst, absolutely free on GameTap.

It's outrageous how lazy some developers can be and how they hope to be able to lean on a reputation. You can say EA often just updates their annual games, but these updates give better graphics and a (sometimes only slight) adjusted gameplay that makes it in many cases (like Tiger Woods 07) worth buying. This is hardly the case with Myst PSP that not only is an insult to the consumer but also to the series itself.

Nintendo DSAdventure Gamers
As a longtime fan of the Myst series, I so badly wanted to like this game, and there are moments where you catch a tiny glimpse of what it could have been: immersive, enjoyable, and even fun. More often than not, though, it ends up being the most painful, soul-destroying, stressful, rather-stick-a-rusty-nail-in-my-eye excuse for an adventure game I have ever played. It saddens me to say this, since with a little common sense and better coding this could have been a great conversion, but as it stands this game is a complete waste of money.

Nintendo DSDS-Extreme
