The Mystery of the Druids is a thrilling and diversified mystery-detective-story, attracting you from the beginning. A series of mysterious murders bit by bit emerges as the harbinger of a weird menace. As our hero Brent Halligan is a guy like you and I (a pizza-loving darts-player with addiction to precious mess) it is our duty to help him and Dr. Turner to unscramble the net of mysterious happenings. As third person adventure it stands in the tradition of Broken Sword and Gabriel Knight and has by no means to hide behind this two. Similar to this two games the role of Dr. Turner in this game seems to me a little bit short. She's only proactive three times during the game and she typically takes over the part in the medieval kitchen!

Overall The Mystery of the Druids is a very good adventure game. I do recommend it to anyone who likes this type of game and is a must for any die hard adventure fans. While it does have some shortcomings such as the very dodgy music and hard gameplay, the game does do more than enough to overcome them and I can see why it was a huge hit over in Germany when it was released.

Because it's an adventure game, the most important thing are the puzzle. Well, the puzzles are nothing extraordinary, typically involving inventory combinations or object usage in the environment. However they can be sometime pretty hard (illogical)- so be prepared to think in very unorthodox methods and to spend ages trying every object in your inventory with each.

Einfach toll, was House of Tale da Zustande gebracht hat.

Overall, Mystery of the Druids is an average adventure. It is inconsistent both in tone and quality, but it has lots of places to explore and lots of puzzles to solve, it provides a friendly playing environment, and it gives somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20 hours of gameplay. I don’t know that it’s worth $45 (Ed. The Mystery of the Druids currently retails for $30 USD at most stores), especially when so many other adventures are selling for $20, but it’s a nice enough first effort from House of Tales, and I’m hopeful that they can make enough money on this release to justify developing more adventures in the future.

Mystery of the Druids is not the best game of its type on the market, but it is a solid mystery game. Years ago, Sierra had a game called Shivers that was spine tingling. You won’t get quite that same feeling with Mystery of the Druids, nor will you get the wonderful graphics of a Myst III, but you will get a nice gaming experience and hours of entertainment with this title.

Quandary
Despite the few criticisms detailed here, which I hope will be seen as constructive, I really enjoyed playing Mystery of the Druids. Maybe the beginning with a detective investigating a serious murder without access to essential equipment was stretching it a bit, but it did provide some humour and set up some good puzzles. It is a game where you have to think about what you are trying to achieve in the context of the story and consider how you may overcome the challenges set before you. I would certainly play a sequel should one be forthcoming.

Mystery of the Druids does something that we rarely, or even never, see in games. It allows you to travel back in time, to a different age and culture. Just seeing the difference of the two periods makes you think that it is a game worth playing. But it takes a few good and long hours to reach this point and even if you do reach it, you will have other problems to deal with. Not all puzzles require luck or search, and through the dialogues you will learn about druids and ancient rituals that you might have not heard or though of before. But the Mystery of the Druids is not a game for everyone. It requires a lot of patience and will to make an average gamer stick with it. If not the mediocre graphics and the difficult puzzles, then the long dialogues, that require all your attention, will be enough for the most to give up. All in all, it is an adventure game that it is only worth renting for a few days because of its low standards.

A game should not give you the freedom to do what you want if you must follow a strict list of objectives to the letter. The Mystery of the Druids violates this cardinal sin repeatedly. Add into the mix that the graphics and sound aren't too special, and we've got another loser. A little more freedom in the order in which you complete the duties would have given some redeeming factor to this game, but as it stands, I'll never play this title again.

Jammer...

Overall I would say that if Mystery of the Druids would have been released 3 years ago, it would have been a defenite top adventure. Unfortunately it now looks a bit outdated and is only worth buying if you're really an adventure lover who wants to keep busy until the next adventure arrives.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Overall The Mystery of the Druids has an initial set of premises which show great promise but end up being disappointing. The gripping plot involving magic and science and the juxtaposition of two different time periods help out a lot, and it is great to encounter a real mystery rather than just a voyage of disconnected discovery of the type one experiences so much in the adventure genre. Many of the puzzles are creative, and the graphical style is pleasing; but the frustrating ways that the dialog revelations and trivial sequencing of actions are implemented largely ruin the whole experience. So unless you are really desperate for computer adventure, I would leave this disconcerting mystery unresolved.

In earlier days, this sloppy, low-tech, point-and-click adventure may have qualified as adequate adventure gaming. But today, in an age where games like Grim Fandango and The Longest Journey present the player with a great deal more, The Mystery of the Druids simply doesn't have much to offer.

A Force for Good
While The Mystery of the Druids is by no means a terrible game, and certainly intriguing enough for the committed retro adventure game fan to plough through once, anyone who enjoyed Blade Runner and Broken Sword, as I did, and comes to this game expecting something of a similar calibre is going to be sorely disappointed.

Mystery of the Druids, by first-time developer House of Tales, is an adventure game that unsuccessfully attempts to evoke the supernatural intrigue of the Gabriel Knight games. As Brent Halligan, a Scotland Yard detective, you are assigned to investigate a series of brutal murders. The setup promises both sleuthing and suspense, but Mystery of the Druids delivers neither. Instead, you get only generic adventure-game puzzles that have little to do with detective work and everything to do with tricking people into helping you perform mundane tasks. You also get a story that moves blandly from point to point.

I'm all for adventure games. For a time, my gaming experience virtually revolved around them. Lord knows I can get a tooth chattering kind of giddy at the sight of a kick ass puzzler, but Mystery of the Druids retains too few of the genuinely quality aspects of either, and exhibits too much in the way of slow, overly methodical pacing that often times revolves around nonsensical puzzles and chance encounters. Can't open the iron gate? Just use your paper folder, silly!

A serious point and click third-person traditional detective adventure? What red-blooded adventure game enthusiast wouldn't be eager to get their mitts on THE MYSTERY OF THE DRUIDS (MOTD), if only to relive a bit of the memories of great games such as Sanitarium, Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templar, or even Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers?

I have always been fascinated by stories surrounding the mystique of the occult. I will even take hours to research topics related to voodoo, paganism, Masonic history, and Egyptian mysteries in my spare time, just for the sake of personal enjoyment. When I first saw Mystery of the Druids, I felt impulsively drawn to its box, which bears the image of a psychopathic-looking, white-haired Druid. I soon discovered, however, that the image on the box is all the interest I would have in the game. Mystery of the Druids has mystery and it has druids, but it has little intelligence.
