Myth: The Fallen Lords

If one thing can be said about Myth, it is not a Command & Conquer clone. The popularity of the real-time strategy game is incredible; many titles have been attempts to cash in on this phenomenon. Unfortunately, most of these games are variations of older titles; but where many copied, Bungie created. Simply put, Myth is the probably the greatest innovation of real-time strategy in years; it clearly proves that there is still room for growth in a genre fallen prey to a myriad of clones.

It may not be as expansive as other real-time strategy games, as it focuses solely on combat, but Myth: The Fallen Lords is bloody, good fun, especially when you move into the multiplayer arena. The simplicity of the game allows it to focus on things like realistic terrain where grenades roll back down the hill at you or blow up and take your own troops out. It also builds a great deal of storyline and strategy as well as a sense of humor into a realistic fantasy world. Despite its steep learning curve, which can be frustrating at times, I would definitely recommend Myth: The Fallen Lords to anyone who enjoys a good battle.

Another great game from Bungie, Myth provides excellent single and multiplayer games. Mac gamers can happily immerse themselves in a captivating storyline, delicious graphics and big pools of blood. Myth is great for both veteran and new gamers (the ten-year-old of our household occasionally kicks our butt!) Although we like the gore and flying body-parts, this may be too much for some players. It is rumored that a later update or patch will allow you to toggle blood on and off. While the game has no soundtrack, it does have wonderfully realistic "ambient sounds": frogs croak, birds chirp, brooks babble. Myth: The Fallen Lords is, hands down, our favorite game and is definitely one to check out.

This fantasy game unfolds around a richly woven plot, involving an epic struggle between the undead and spirit forces of Dark and the living forces of Light. Balor and the Fallen Lords lead the vast armies of the Dark against you, while you must lead the outnumbered Light forces in a desperate, last-ditch campaign of resistance.

Myth ist ein actiongeladenes, taktisches Vergnügen der Extraklasse, allerdings nicht für jedermann. Ein Großteil des Spielspaßes entsteht nämlich durch die satirische Art der Schlachtendarstellung. Als besonders faszinierend empfand ich die exzellente Darstellung der Topographie, das abwechslungsreiche Missiondesign, das immer wieder Überraschungen bereithält, und die realistische Umsetzung der physikalischen Gesetze bei allen Explosionen. Strategen dürften den zu hohen Zufallsfaktor bedauern, der einem hin und wieder die Planung über den Haufen wirft. Nicht gerade für Einsteiger ist zudem der hohe Schwierigkeitsgrad geeignet. Trotzdem kann Myth durch die gelungene Atmosphäre und die witzige Spielidee begeistern. Das PC ACTION Gold hat es sich in jedem Fall schon für die innovative Grafikengine verdient.

Myth is a great game to look at. After beating the first couple of levels, the enjoyment could quickly turn to nausea as try after try fails to pass one single level. The graphics and realism are breathtaking, if only the single player game wasn't so difficult! Experienced gamers will certainly get their money's worth out of this one, but novices should run screaming. If you are into (and good at) real-time strategy games, definitely look into Myth.

Myth is een vernieuwend real-time strategiespel waarbij de vlag de lading zeker niet dekt. Op het eerste zicht lijkt Myth misschien een goor, vies en gewelddadig spel. Maar er is meer. Myth is van kwalitatief hoog niveau zowel grafisch als qua speelbaarheid. Ben je echter een bezorgde ouder, zeg dan niet dat je niet was gewaarschuwd als je dit spel voor je favoriete oogappel koopt!

In der Kategorie "Grafik" hat das Echtzeit-Genre mit Myth einen großen (Bungie-)Sprung nach vorn gemacht – die 3D-Landschaften wirken lebendiger und naturgetreuer als die Total Annihilation-Szenarien oder die Bullfrog-Dungeons. Vor lauter Begeisterung über die bildhübsche 3D-Grafik haben die Programmierer aber doch glatt vergessen, ihrem "Müff" etwas mehr Spieltiefe zu verpassen. Wenn man schon ohne Burgen, Bauernhöfe und Schmieden auskommen muß, dann wären zumindest zusätzliche Einheiten (16 sind einfach zu wenig) und mehr Zaubersprüche angebracht – schließlich brechen mit dem Basis-Ausbau und dem Rohstoff-Management gleich zwei wesentliche (und ausgesprochen kurzweilige) Bestandteile eines zünftigen Echtzeitstrategiespiels weg.

Die linearen Missionen fallen sehr abwechslungsreich aus und bauen logisch aufeinander auf. Liebgewonnene Streiter darf ich meist ins nächste Szenario übernehmen – prima. Allerdings fehlt mir ein wenig Truppenmanagement zwischen den einzelnen Missionen, und ab und zu verzweigende Aufträge wären auch nicht schlecht gewesen. Dennoch hebt sich Myth positiv von vielen Echtzeit-Konkurrenten ab, da es wegen der freien Kameraführung wie ein spannender Spielfilm wirkt.

There are so many facets to "Myth: The Fallen Lords" that I can't possibly get to them all without making my editor work overtime. Suffice it to say that this game is as big as its hype (literally...the full install takes up nearly 340MB). But then, certainly you've played it and know this by now, right? If not, you'd better hurry. According to Bungie, "Myth II" is just over that bloody embankment.

Freunde mittelalterlicher Metzeleien vom Schlage "Braveheart" werden von der Atmospähre, der Präsentation und dem martialischen Geschehen gleichermaßen begeistert sein. Insbesondere im Mehrspielerbetrieb spielt Myth seine Stärken aus. Dort vor allem bleibt genug Zeit für die vielen taktischen Finessen. Listenreich lege ich im Wald einen Hinterhalt, bestücke eine Brücke mit tödlichen Minen oder lasse eine Sprengbombe den Abhang hinunterrollen. Mein unsichtbarer Zwerg schleicht durch die Reihen des Feindes, um ihm ein kostbares Relikt zu entwenden oder einen Magier unschädlich zu machen. Als Solist hat man es da schon schwerer, denn der gegner reagiert rasend schnell auf meine Manöver und greift gerne an mehreren Stellen parallel an.

Myth: The Fallen Lords er meget flot, det lyder meget flot, og selve gameplayet er egentligt i top - men man kunne dog stadig ønske sig en lidt større variation spillet igennem. Men stadig: Et klart hit for fans!

Det ser kanske ut som en vacker prinsessa, men Myth kommer inte att får dig att leva lycklig i alla dina dagar.
