The multi-player is similar to that 'other' Acclaim shooter, Turok. You've got Co-op mode and Deathmatch levels for up to 4 players. One of the Deathmatch options is called "Brood Wars" and lets you play as the bugs. This isn't as fun as it sounds. For some bizarre reason, when you're a human controlled bug, you can't climb walls anymore. What you actually get is just a different graphics set (which only your opponents can see, anyway). Oh well.
Like I said at the beginning, I had fun playing Armorines. The graphics and sound are good, and the plausible plot is refreshing. Not an epic, to be sure, but fun anyway. Anybody want to tell me if it was worth turning into a comic book? I just couldn't bring myself to pick it up.

I'm reminded of PC add-ons to first-person shooters. They add in a few new enemies, feature new levels and texture sets and a new cast of weapons, but they play identically. Armorines is a Starship Troopers add-on to the Turok 2 engine. Nothing more. If you can live with that, and you're interested in blasting some overgrown insects, you might want to give this game a rent. If you're expecting a Turok 2 killer, though, you're in for a big disappointment.

Acclaim Studios London must have noticed that MicroProse had neglected to properly exploit its license for last year's giant bug-filled sci-fi film Starship Troopers for the console systems, because the inspiration behind its latest game for the Nintendo 64 is crystal clear. Though the name of the game comes from a little-known Acclaim Comics property where a military unit possesses futuristic suits of armor along the lines of Marvel Comics' Iron Man, the alien race that the group clashes with in Armorines is totally dissimilar to the one found in the comic book. However, the alien race bears more than a passing resemblance to the swarm of creatures found in Paul Verhoeven's recent cinematic ode to fascism.

Now, you are probably thinking "Geez, this Armorines game must be a huge pile of steaming crap!", but it isn't all bad. The graphics are foggy and slows down sometimes, but some of the environments are incredibly well done. The railed events included are a little slow, but holding a huge, powerful gun that is able to blast away bug after bug with a single blow is wildly amusing. This is a game that would have been more suited to a next generation machine like the Dreamcast or PlayStation 2, but, as it stands, Armorines is barely average.
