Total! (Germany) (Nov, 1997)

Electric Playground (Nov 24, 1997)
Diddy Kong Racing is a triumph. It is an exquisitely animated, color-rich racing game that bubbles over with character and charm. Addictive to the bitter end (in the sense that there has to be an end) and completely satisfying throughout, this cart, along with the equally superlative Goldeneye 007, is proof positive that Rare is indeed the finest videogame development company of the year.

A single-player adventure mode lets you unlock tracks to use in the multiplayer modes, and it's madly addictive but never frustrating. Catchy tunes play throughout the races, including a few that sound like Christmas carols in the snow stages. With exciting racing action that places fun over realism, Diddy Kong Racing is a top-notch title for the Nintendo 64.

Video Games (Nov, 1997)

The music in this game is also really neat each track has it's own unique. Although in 3 and 4 player there seems to be no music. The only thing where Mario Kart 64 outshines DKR is the multiplayer, although DKR is good and has some quite original courses it just doesn't compare to MK64. If you're a fan of Mario Kart then you will feel right at home with DKR it plays very similar to the fat plumbers title. Overall this is a brilliant title and what Mario Kart 64 should have been it has some of the most colourful graphics and sound for one of the earlier N64 titles. In my opinion this is better than Mario Kart 64 and would strongly recommend purchasing this superb title.

Mega Fun (Nov, 1997)

Diddy Kong Racing looks fantastic to this day. It plays fabulous to this day. And unlike almost every other Nintendo 64 game, it has still not been superseded; most of its terrific ideas were recklessly abandoned. Cheerful, creatively colored and especially well animated, the same artistic style that cast it off as too kiddie -- a hilariously narrow-minded complaint circa 1997 -- has only made it look better against its contemporaries. Its stellar soundtrack of jaunty, well-composed themes characteristically match their setting. But more important than any of that, it innovates and refines. It guarantees to last. It constantly challenges.

N64 games have come a long way in their first year. DKR is proof of it. Mario Kart owners may overlook it, but they shouldn't. It's very different.

A hybrid racing game that in no subtle way copies adventure elements from Super Mario 64 and the entire kart racing engine from Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing purports to be a "wild racing adventure." And it is, but only if you can bare the sheer gall of Rare for ripping off Nintendo's own Mario Kart series with such accuracy and craft.

Retroage (Dec 25, 2008)

Nintendo Life (Jun 25, 2011)
Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64 is a prime example of why gamers should never judge a title by its cover. What initially appears to be yet another cutesy Mario Kart clone aimed at kids not only manages to successfully differentiate itself from its main source of inspiration, but also provides a surprisingly engrossing and stubborn challenge. Make no mistake about it, this game requires genuine skill. There are a few forgettable characters and the environments are perhaps somewhat generic, but Diddy Kong Racing still comes highly recommended.

IGN (Nov 24, 1997)
Diddy Kong Racing is a calculated, copy of a game that Nintendo, not Rare, originated. But as is the case with Rare, the company has that amazing knack for taking an idea and crafting it into something beautiful. Diddy Kong Racing is a deep, colorful game with an overly kiddy feel and look. But after a few minutes, you'll be compelled with subtle details, blissful gameplay and graphics, and the full, rich world that makes Diddy Kong Racing an even better game than Mario Kart.

GameSpot (Nov 19, 1997)
Diddy Kong Racing is a game that shouldn't have been released for at least another six months. The foul taste left behind by Mario Kart 64 is still too fresh in my mind to accept a game as similar as this, even though this is a much better game than Kart 64 ever was. Also, the game could have used a few more worlds and more tracks, as the repetitiveness of DKR is what ultimately kills it.
