It just doesn't get a whole lot better than this. I've been told that Saturn Duke is actually superior to the upcoming PSX and N64 versions. I can't say if this is true or not, but I will say that it is believable - as Saturn Duke really is that good. If you have a Netlink - you would have to be a complete idiot not to get this game. If you don't have a Netlink - this is the best reason to get one. Duke Nukem 3D is simply an essential Saturn purchase. (It also has me hungry for Quake, Lobotomy's next Saturn title).

Replete with everything parents and congressmen love to hate, Duke Nukem 3D is first-person gaming at its ultimate. Violence, sex, humor, originality and more long-term fun that you can shake a double-barreled shotgun at.

The gameplay is a lot of fun. Most games of this genre have simply been the run around and shoot things type, and Duke is no exception. However, this game has an exceptional quality - fun! It's just more fun than most others of it's kind. It's the little things, like seeing yourself in a mirror, finding an alien on the toilet, or tipping the strippers, that sort of thing. It all comes together seamlessly to make a superb game. Bottom Line: 3D action with an edge. Humour, weapons, and lots of little extras make this more than worthwhile. Highest recommendation.

DOSKingdom of Desire

DOSPC Zone
I honestly think Duke is more than value for money. It's more inventive, and more entertaining, than Doom. I know they've had long enough to get it right (but so have many others, who've tried and failed), and I know that with Quake about to hit us, things have moved on in the meantime. Someone in the office said that this looks like a cartoon, and Quake looks real. This is also true, but that doesn't mean that this isn't a great game in its own right. We like it a lot. If Apogee don't make much money on it, they'll only have themselves to blame. They've timed its release really badly: it should have been out six months ago. But it's still good.

Xbox 3601UP
If there's a weakness here, it's that the game doesn't fill up your whole TV screen -- it's sized within two static "border" graphics. This is probably a holdover from the computer monitor aspect ratio the game was originally designed for, and it sucks that 360 players need to sacrifice a considerable amount of their screen real estate to wallpaper. Other than that, there's not much to dislike about Duke. It's not for the kiddies, but if you've got 800 Marketplace points lying around, you oughta come get some.

DOSGame Revolution
Duke Nukem is not really revolutionary, but it is very good game. The well known (by now) first-person format lends itself well to Duke, and the game sucks you right in. Even more fun are networked games where you get to blow away your friends. The thing that bothers me most about this game is the inevitable 'Duke Nukem Movie'. All this publicity is bound to become more personally irritating to me than anything since 'The Dukes of Hazzard'.

Xbox 360Thunderbolt Games
What Duke Nukem 3D lacks in relevance it makes up for with the same solid, reliable formula that converted so many first person shooter fans, in the early nineties. How well this game has aged is truly a testament to the series. It’s only regrettable that we may never get a true sequel to one of the most iconic entries in gaming history. Hail to the king, baby.

Still, after 12 years, Duke still kicks ass. He may not be as good looking as he used to be but he continues to prove that the adage - its not the graphics that make a game great, its the gameplay - will always be true.

Duke Nukem 3D is worth the download time to try at the very least and worth buying when you find you like it. Duke Nukem 3D's only major weakness is that there are only about 9 different alien creatures in it but you'll hardly notice with the various locations and vast maps you have to explore. If you've played the shareware game then I strongly urge you to buy the full game, you won't be disappointed!

Aside from the graphical disappointment Duke Nukem plays very well. There are ample levels of which some are huge sprawling areas. I haven't completed the entire game as yet but I'm sure that I will. However, I cannot see myself returning to discover all of the secret areas (which I did with Doom). The inclusion of link-up mode will ensure the games lastability.

It's rare when a game comes along that really kicks your ass. 3D Realm's full version of Duke Nukem 3D is just that kind of posterior pummeler. With its free-flowing 3D action, over-the-top weapons, and ruthlessly attitudinal protagonist, Duke Nukem will have PC gamers worldwide rubbing their rumps with spine-tingling glee. Prepare to take off your thinking cap and immerse yourself in a world of violent bliss. The ballots have been cast and the verdict has arrived: The Duke is A-#1.

Xbox 360IGN
Duke Nukem 3D is yet another classic release that makes a wonderful conversion onto Xbox Live Arcade. Some might be put off by its convoluted, old school level design and predictably unattractive appearance, but there’s no doubt that it’s one of the fathers of the most popular genre in our industry. Toss in the new age additions like online co-op and a replay editor and most will find this to be more than a simple trip down memory lane.

Xbox 360Official XBox Magazine
Nevertheless, these niggles don’t keep Duke from greatness. The one-liners and parodies are still funny, the level design is outstanding (including secrets-aplenty on each map), the inventory items are genius (here’s looking at you, jetpack and HoloDuke), and the weapon stash — notably the pipebombs and Shrinker — remains one of the genre’s most unique and fun to wield…

Xbox 360Meristation

Its Duke, he is still a bad ass and in the end this version rivals the original with its 8 player Co-op and we finally get a FPS with some cool weapons again. So buy this game… now… and GET SOME!

Xbox 360UltraNinjas
At 800 points (approx £7 for those who like their prices in actual factual cash) you can’t say fairer than that, really. Much in the way that Doom scratched a particular itch, Duke 3D scratches that itch further, giving us a simple, fun piece of gaming history that stands up to latter, much more complex and sprawling examples in the genre remarkably well. It’s hard to fathom why, some 13 years after release, I can be reviewing a retro re-release of this before the sequel has even seen the light of day, but until Duke Forever comes out (er, if it ever comes out) Duke 3D serves as a great reminder of times gone by.

Xbox 360Jolt (UK)
There’s no getting away from the fact that Duke Nukem has gotten on a bit, and he’s already been around the block a few times on several other systems. Still, as a trip down memory lane or an insight into a key period of FPS development, the Live Arcade version is just about worth the admission price. Tellingly, it’s still a better bargain than some of the other games currently asking for 800 of your MS Points, and it will probably last you longer, too.

Duke Nukem 3D was one of my favourite games of the '90s, and it was with some trepidation that I returned to it in 2008. Thankfully, while some of its design decisions are more than a little frustrating, it remains a brilliantly entertaining first-person shooter and probably deserves more credit for helping to shape the genre than it has been given. It's a shame the online modes aren't more compelling, but having spent two blissfully nostalgic days battling through the single player campaign, I'm happy to consider it 800 Points well spent. Now just give us Duke Nukem Forever. Please...

Xbox 360Game Over Online
Duke Nukem hasn't aged terrifically well, but the gameplay is very much still there. It's much more challenging than I remember it being, and a lot less funny, but it's a nice snapshot of first-person shooter history. You could do a lot worse with your Microsoft Points than to pick it up.

Xbox 360NZGamer
If, however, you remember Duke fondly and are still following Duke Nukem Forever's development under the mistaken impression it's ever going to get released, you'd be hard pressed to come up with a good enough reason to let this one go past - it's an excellent version of the game, translates very well to the console and there's no need to muck around on your PC trying to get it to go properly. If you get all 200 achievement points you'll unlock two screenshots of the (allegedly still in development) sequel to this game, Duke Nukem Forever, which was first announced in 1997 (!). Just don't play it for extended periods on a big telly - I'm not predisposed to game-induced motion sickness (I've never gotten it before) and Duke makes me want to hurl if I play it too long.

Xbox 360GameSpot
Duke Nukem 3D is a pleasing yet sadistic walk down memory lane. The graphics, sound, gameplay, and characters are all faithful to the 1996 standards that made the game famous. A few new features augment an already complete package, both online and offline. If you've passed through these ruined streets before, the new features and familiar content warrant another visit to this grim and bloody version of Los Angeles. If you are new to the franchise, this game is definitely worth a look, and you can experience exactly what made Duke Nukem, for better or for worse, a household name.

Xbox 360TeamXbox
Duke Nukem 3D is a great treat for the die hard fans of the series, and hopefully some small solace to hold them over until Duke Nukem Forever comes out. Maybe that should be “if” it comes out. The continuing delays in that game’s development are the biggest running joke in video games. But maybe 3D Realms is serious this time about putting that game out, and they offered this up as a little appetizer to get people interested in the franchise again. Duke fans, keep your fingers crossed and go shrink some monsters with seven of your friends online.

SEGA SaturnObjectif-SEGA

PlayStationPSX Extreme
In the end, whether or not you'll like the Playstation version of Duke Nukem depends on how high you set your standards. It's an adequate part of the PC version that is lacking in a few key areas as the aforementioned quality of the graphics and the sometimes hideously slow frame rate (which, in my opinion, really affects the gameplay). If, on the other hand, you're a big Duke fan or have a passion for 3-D corridor shooters, Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown has plenty to offer. For me, it ends up being just a poor part and consequently, an average game.
80
DOSGameSurge
Again, why bother? Because just when you think that you're done with this silly, boring game, and are just about to exit and erase the whole bloody thing, something happens. A floor collapses, something blows up, or Duke may say a funny line - and trust me, the lines are very funny. And that is what makes DN3D fun. Passable action, intense gore, and a genuinely twisted sense of humor. If you're looking for the next big thing in computer gaming, try Quake or something, but if you're in the mood for big guns, big bangs, and big fun than try out Duke Nukem 3D.
80
DOSComputer Games Magazine
Gameplay is ultimately what we're interested in, and in this area, Duke is the king. But so what? If 3D Realms really wants to impress us, they can move beyond this type of gameplay. Because as good as Duke is (and make no mistake, it's really good), you just can't help but think that someone needs to take this genre to another level, kind of like those guys called id did back in '92. Have any of these games really changed from Wolfenstein 3D? Perhaps that's part of their appeal - their familiarity. Kind of like the buddy flick and the romance novel, nothing really changes, but that doesn't stop people from spending their money on them. If you really messed with the formula, would everyone rejoice over your innovation or would they merely say they liked the old way better? Who knows, certainly not 3D Realms, who are milking the genre for all its worth.

Xbox 360Worth Playing
I'd be lying if I said that Duke Nukem 3D is as good today as it ever was, but it hasn't aged at all badly, and it can teach modern first-person shooters a thing or two about level design and plain fun. On a console where first-person shooters are typically brown and grey, Duke is a colorful lesson in silliness and playability that is well worth the 800 Microsoft points. Indeed, with 39 levels (the game includes the add-on pack bundled with the PC Atomic Edition), it's actually a very good value indeed. Now hurry up and finish Duke Nukem Forever — though please, no more hunting for the multicolored keys!

Xbox 3603D Juegos

I still pop Duke Nukem 3D in my computer from time to time, though. It’ll never replace the Doom games in my heart, but it’s still a pretty fun kill-a-thon that, at times, does show some nice innovation. Unfortunately, it’s just a bit TOO much like its predecessor for it to stand out in my mind as a particularly noteworthy game.

Duke is Duke and any Duke is good Duke. And if you're a fan of Duke or never got to play the PC version, then you may want to pick up Duke Nukem Total Meltdown. Some people who have played the PC version may be a little disappointed, since it's basically the same game with a few new levels. These people should probably rent this game to play through some of the newer levels. But those who never got to experience Duke Nukem's zany world first hand should definitely check this one out. "Hail to the king, baby!"

If you can overlook the poor graphics and how the game looks you could be in for a bit of a treat with this game but having said this there are just a few too many niggles to be able to consider this an essential download. However thanks to the humour involved and a solid multiplayer addition the game represents fairly good value for it’s 800ms point cost.
