www.nintendo.com:
A lean, mean, first-person shootin' machine, Duke Nukem comes at you with two fistfuls of firepower and a take-no-prisoners attitude toward the alien scum infesting his universe. Duke's put-downs and penchant for blowing up anything in his path made the original game a PC hit. In making the leap to the N64, the game's 'tude and content have been toned down -- somewhat. The game still boasts a Mature rating, though, for its potty humor and other exercises in dubious taste.
After an opening stage that closely resembles that found in the PC versions, Duke Nukem 64 quickly strikes out on its own. In all, the single-player mode contains 29 levels. While following the general themes of the PC games, single-player levels have been redesigned. Halls, doors, weapons, secret areas and enemies have all been rearranged, giving vet Dukesters a brand new gaming experience. There's even a search-and-rescue aspect to the missions, as Duke must teleport women to safety.

For reasons known only to themselves, the developers at Eurocom Developments built in a multiplayer cooperative mode. Yeah, right. More in keeping with the Dukester's philosophy of life is Dukematch mode, in which as many as four players try to blow each other to smithereens. You can select as many as three CPU-controlled Dukes and hunt them in any of 29 levels. You'll find three brand-new Dukematch arenas, including a pirate's lair and the gloomy Castle Dukenstein.

New weapons include a Grenade Launcher and a Plasma Cannon, which is just the thing when you want to vaporize a party of lowlifes. There's new ammo, too: Dum-Dum Bullets for the Pistol, High-Explosive Rounds for the Shotgun and Heat-Seeking Missiles for the Rocket Launcher. There's a unique joy to itty-bittifying your pals with the Shrinker/Expander, then crushing them beneath your steel-toed boot.

The 3-D worlds look suitably grungy, with plenty of mock movie posters and other visual jokes. Explosions and other special effects are excellent, but the 2-D enemies tend to pixilate at close range, just before you waste 'em. Play control is fast and hit detection is first-rate. Eurocom removed much of the music, leaving plenty of room for sound effects and the game's trademark Dukeisms. As the big guy himself would grunt, "Come get some!"
