If you're a N64 owner who's been waiting to smack fools upside the head with a stick or slice up suckas with a sword, Mace is the game for you. It's bloody, it's fun and it's the best fighting game the N64 has to offer.

This game is a looker and it has made some creative attempts to use 3D space and provide interactivity with the fighting environment, for these reasons it deserves credit. I feel there are some issues with the control but it is certainly very playable.

But regardless, Mace has aged better than many early 3D fighters, and once can see a similarity between it and the recent 3D Mortal Kombat titles. You certainly have no reason to play Mace instead of those games, but revisiting Midway's earlier forays into 3D fighting has some historical interest if nothing else.

It's more of the same tournament fighter stuff with a few twists. The characters are cool, but maybe not cool enough to stop the yawns for long.

All in all, Mace is a depressing game. It looks so good that you really want to like it, but it just isn't very much fun to play at all. It falls squarely between Dark Rift and War Gods in the realm of 3D fighting on the N64. Hopefully, someone will eventually do a worthwhile N64 fighting game.
