Super Play

The tracks convey a good sense of humor and attention to detail. The main problem with Micro Machines 64 has got to be its limited overhead view, which doesn't let you see much of the track ahead. If you go too fast, you may find yourself flying off the table before you even see it coming! As a result, success in this game is largely a matter of memorizing the tracks. Still, you can't beat Micro Machines for chaotic, multiplayer racing action.

While it's hardly a common occurrence on the N64, this racing title is a complete success. Unlike many others, it's perfect for anyone if they've had a little experience playing video games. If you're familiar with the franchise, the camera change will be aggravating, but not enough to keep you away from a superb little game.

I don't think anyone will argue that MM64 Turbo is a serious racing game. Quite the contrary, it couldn't be more un-serious and that's what makes it so much fun. It is a well-produced game that can, at first, appear deceptively simple. Try it and I think you will agree that it has a little something to offer everyone (even hardcore racing enthusiasts). I would recommend it to anyone.

The graphics and the replay value remain fairly high, considering the options on hand. The sound effects are also appropriate for a game of this nature, although the buzzing of a group of boats can be grating at times. Unfortunately, if you already own the PlayStation incarnation, you're probably better off with that version, as the increased multiplayer options are the only recommendation for the N64 version. If you only have an N64, and you are looking to grab a great multiplayer game, then Beetle Adventure Racing is a far better investment. That said, any of you seriously craving Micro Machines action on your Nintendo probably won't be too disappointed. It's not like it's a bad game, it just could have been much better.

For a game that features so many multiplayer options, the interface of Micro Machines is surprisingly unsuited to multiplayer sessions. Every time one car lags behind the pack or crashes, the entire game stops while the offending car blows up. Some of the tracks are well thought out, but the multiplayer mode is atrocious. I like goofy games like this, but the dorky characters are embarrassing.
