Nintendo Land
After completing the entire game, players will feel as though they've truly accomplished something. Perhaps this has something to do with Mystical Ninja's simplistic nature (Although the plot is rather intricate at times). Rest assured, you will enjoy this game
Nintendo Life
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is something of a rarity – a quality third-party game for the Nintendo 64, and as such comes highly recommended. Mystical Ninja stands out from the rest of the N64 library as something with its own truly unique flavour; sure, it’s not the longest or hardest adventure game ever and the camera could be more refined, but you’ll want to come back and play it again and again – it really is that good. Here’s hoping that Konami can work around the need for a Controller Pak to save your data and get it out on the Virtual Console so that more people can get the chance to experience this hidden classic.
If there is one thing about Mystical Ninja, above all the other criticism, where it really falls down, it is the fact that it is not only very short, it is very easy too. The game can be blitzed through it 10 – 15 hours, which for an adventure game isn't near long enough. However, crammed into these few hours are more quality gaming moments than many other developers have even thought about. It's a game that transcends its basic flaws, with an engaging plot and loveable characters that keep you hooked until the very end. A word of warning though – attempting to play this game without an open mind will cause culture shock of the highest order. Just sit back and enjoy the madness.
With its quirky characters, easy quest, and great sound, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon should ease the torturous wait for Zelda for those who are willing to forgive slight graphical problems. N64 owners eager to get their hands on anything that smells even remotely of an RPG will find a funny title -- worthy of the Konami name that has recently been tried by heartless conversions. Unfortunately, the off-beat nature of the Goemon series also makes the games a matter of taste. There will be people who will absolutely hate this game because of its subject matter -- so definitely rent it before you buy. I like this game (mmmh, maybe I've spent too much time in Japan), even though it's strictly a first-generation title that will look hopelessly outdated in less than six months.
Nintendo Power Magazine
Play control is good and there's plenty of variety to keep players busy, from regular running around and fighting to controlling a giant robot. Konami is nothing if not ambitious with this title, but the bizarre story, poor translation and linear progression of events may hurt the game's acceptance in North America where the characters are not as well known. If you liked the original Mystical Ninja for the Super NES, you'll probably enjoy this game, as well. There's Mario 64-type action, but the game isn't as polished or as big.
A solid entry in a pretty crowded field, Mystical Ninja offers action puzzlers of all ages an engaging game experience. Good value.
Mystical Ninja is a solid, quirky, and entirely rehashed title that holds its own well against the horde of painful Mario clones. Americans who think that the cultural barrier may be too great may want to opt for a rental first.
