Consoles Plus (Jan, 1999)
Excellente adaptation.

Gamezilla (Dec 29, 1998)
This is basically the same game as the PSX version. If you already own it, there is really no reason to spend the money on this game. I did give it a higher score than the PSX version because I think that there is nothing else like this game on the N64 so it gets some N64 originality points. If you only have an N64 and you are looking for a game that does not star a mascot, sports player or plumber, I suggest checking the game out. It does have some problems but if you can look past them, you should enjoy this game.

Total! (Germany) (Dec, 1998)

It starts off well, but Nightmare Creatures gradually loses its luster as you work your way through it. Still, horror fans will probably want to give this dark adventure a chance.

Mega Fun (Jan, 1999)

IGN (Nov 30, 1998)
Nightmare Creatures (64) is well-executed conversion of the PlayStation original. The game is extremely moody and gory if not downright eerie. The theme is a refreshing change from the usual 64-bit selection and it's a third-person action-fighter, which in itself is a novelty for the console. Had this game arrived last year and had we not already played it for PlayStation, I would have no doubt enjoyed it quite a bit more. As it stands, it's still a solid N64 title that, unfortunately, has its share of camera and control frustrations. A good entry from Activision. Now, how about some N64 exclusives?

Schade...

It's really great to see a port of a game not make all the mistakes the original did, and it makes the title much easier to recommend. Nightmare Creatures still isn't a perfect game, but it now has enough going for it to be worth the time it takes to explore its dark, spooky world.

If you like gore-this Mature-rated game is loaded with it-you'll love Nightmare Creatures. Although most areas aren't overly challenging, the boss characters will put up a good fight. It's unfortunate that the control and camera systems aren't more polished. The play control is the real nightmare.

Besides the graphical changes to Nightmare Creatures, there isn't much that's changed from the Playstation version. Consequently, I realized I don't like this game. The enemies are ridiculously hard, the control could've been much better, the camera sucks 90 percent of the time and the overall feel leaves much to be desired. It just isn't fun to play. I do not recommend buying this game. Save your dough for something good, like Zelda.

HappyPuppy (Jan 15, 1999)
Though Activision has tried hard to portray this as an interactive action/horror game (a la Resident Evil), the fact is that Nightmare Creatures ends up feeling like a brainless shooter after a while. The problem is that the graphics and action don't do much to make up for the lack of story and pale level design. There are few souls bored enough to make it through all 20 levels of this thing.

Just Games Retro (Nov 02, 2014)
The commenters who recommended this game also mentioned a sequel, though I don’t believe it made it to the N64 lineup, and quite frankly, I don’t exactly have a burning desire to track it down after playing the first game. Nightmare Creatures is a really intriguing concept marred to the point of nigh-unplayability through a combination of wretched controls, a camera that seems to be out to work against you, and enemy AI that all but ensures that playing “the right way” will drive you to ragequitting. As previously noted, we don’t hand out 1/2 star reviews to games unless they have no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and Nightmare Creatures does do enough in terms of setting the right kind of tone to avoid the dreaded half-snowflake, but not much else. It might be worth a look if and only if you are a total mark for Lovecraftian horror or beat-‘em-ups, but aside from that, you’d be well-advised to leave it on the other side of the Atlantic.
