Five minutes behind Spidey's mask and you'll be stuck to this game like a web-wrapped super villain.
"Please, Activision, please don't mess up Spider-Man." This is the thought that was likely running through the minds of Spider-Man's fans when they heard that the web-slinger would be fighting crime in a 3D video game. With Spidey's insane special powers and limitless ability to crawl on any surface, it seemed like a tough task to stay true to Spider-Man's appeal within the confines of a video game. Well, Spidey fans, it's time to let loose a big ol' sigh of relief. Spider-Man is finally here, and he's swingin' through the city bustin' up villains exactly how he's supposed to be.
Spider-Man smoothly swings onto N64 thanks to the awesome effort of Edge of Realty and Neversoft. Sound familiar? That's because these are the same two companies who ate up countless hours of your life by creating a little game called Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. On top of hiring these proven code-slingers to keep Spider-Man true to his roots, Activision even inked Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee to provide a sweet voice-sampled introduction to set the mood for the game. Add to this an ample supply of authentic comic book art and a gang of Spidey's most famous friends and enemies, and a solid stage is set for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to storm into action.
By far, the greatest aspect of the Spider-Man video game is Spidey's ability to swing freely between and above the towering sky scrapers of New York City. If Spider-Man doesn't quite make it to the roof of a building, no problem. He just sticks to the side of the structure and crawls to the top. While not swinging through the air, Spider-Man can crawl up walls, creep along the ceiling, and basically stick to anything he darn well pleases.
The automatic camera work feels tweaked out at times, but considering the incredible freedom with which Spidey explores his world it's a minor problem which is easily ignored. Overall, controlling Spider-Man feels great. Edge of Reality didn't take any shortcuts, and they didn't limit Spidey's ability to stick to almost anything. If you want to hang upside-down from a rafter or sit sideways on a wall, then you can do it. Even more than solving the puzzles and fighting the super villains which appear throughout the game, it's the simple pleasure of sneaking through the city as Spider-Man which makes this game so fun.
Spider-Man takes gamers through 34 levels of action, filled with comic book cut scenes and appearances from established bad guys like Scorpion, Rhino and Venom. Spider-Man's tasks range from beating up thugs to solving intricate switch-based puzzles. Edge of Reality provides a nice variety in the action as you progress through the story, along with a well-balanced difficulty level which becomes more intense as you approach the end of the game. Even though this is a modern 3D game, it has the fun feel of an old-fashioned action platformer. You never know what you'll be facing next or what you'll have to do to make it to the next save point.
As in the comic, Spider-Man can only use his webbing when his Web Cartridges are full. Spider-Man uses his webbing to swing through the air, but he can also use it to tangle up enemies or to fire bursts of impact webbing. Spidey can quickly weave a protective web dome, or even create webbed boxing gloves to increase the power of his punches.
Spider-Man doesn't have a multiplayer mode to increase the replay value, but Edge of Reality included some extra goodies to keep your interest. There are 32 hidden Comic Book Covers scattered throughout the game which cover Spider-Man's entire career. If you find a Comic Book Cover, you can view it whenever you like and read about its significance in Spidey's life cycle. Also, you can check out cool new covers which were created specifically to follow the storyline of the game.
As you encounter friends and foes throughout Spidey's missions, you'll be able to view detailed biographies of these characters in a special Gallery Mode. Even better, you can unlock alternate costumes by beating the game on different difficulty levels.
Spider-Man is one of the coolest super heroes on the market, and we're stoked that he's just as cool in his N64 debut. Even casual Spidey fans will get wrapped up in this action-packed game, and die-hard Spider-Man freaks might as well buy two Game Paks -- one to play and one to keep safely stored in its original packaging.
