The debut N64 game from North Carolina publisher Red Storm Entertainment comprises 12 stealthy stages. Developer Saffire picked the 10 choicest missions from the PC version of the game, including Congo and Australia, and added two missions from the best-selling Eagle Watch expansion pack.
Members of Rainbow Six, an all-star antitierrorist team, hail from Spain, U.S., Israel, Australia and elsewhere in the first world. Their basic job is to clean up high-profile riffraff wherever they may strike, from Congo and South America and the good old U.S. of A.
As its fearless leader, the cryptically monikered "Six," you must hand-pick the pros you need for each high-pressure mission. Put safety first, because dead team members will be of no use in later missions. In a welcome change from the every-man-for-himself mentality of most shooters, players can partner to complete especially grueling missions. However, plans for a deathmatch mode were jettisoned as contrary to the Pak's emphasis on teamwork.
Saffire has forged an impressive resume in both whirlwind suspense (James Bond 007 for Game Boy) and glossy N64 action (Bio F.R.E.A.K.S.). The bustling Utah codeshop rewrote the Rainbow Six PC game engine from the ground up to take advantage of the N64's unique strengths. While movement and targeting are excellent, a bit of awkwardness results from the fact that Saffire had to map some of complex controls to the Control Pad.
Make no mistake: this is a demanding, strategically oriented game. Saffire did as good a job as could be expected with the menu system, but mastering the plethora of choices and options will take time.
Rainbow Six gives you a choice of eight sidearms plus silenced versions of most, seven camouflage outfits, and special kits for lockpicking, demolition and electronics work. In this one-hit-and-you're-out game, there are no quick-fix medical kits.
Rainbow Six boasts an exceptionally dramatic sound track. Footfalls are a bit too loud, but the bad guys never seem to notice.
One of the biggest brand names in American letters, Tom Clancy specializes in 800-page doorstops groaning with globetrotting suspense and incredibly detailed descriptions of high-tech weaponry, ruthless Pentagon careerism and international skullduggery. His first N64 game will appeal to spy and adventure fans alike.

To carry out a mission, the player plays "Six," the leader of the team, and must assemble a crack team from a pool of skilled specialists and plan the operation using an overhead three-dimensional model of the target area. Once satisfied with their strategy, the player then leads the assault using a first- or third-person (you can toggle between the two) three-dimensional view. The game will be playable by single players with artificial intelligence controlling friendly and enemy troops, or by multiple players across the internet in both collaborative and head-to-head modes.
Each mission consists of two distinct phases: the planning phase and the action phase. In the planning phase, the player receives a briefing and is given all available intelligence regarding the missions. The player then selects appropriate team members, equips them, and plans the mission.
Rainbow Six creates the best of both strategy and action game play. The action play is team oriented - perfect for Internet play. With 20 playable characters and 17 different missions in real world locations, the variety of gameplay is extensive.
So carefully select your team and even more carefully, conceive your plan. Because it's time to go save the world. One mission at a time.
