Skating's messiah brings his bag of tricks to Nintendo 64.
At the 1999 ESPN Summer X-Games, the legendary Tony Hawk became the first aerial technician to pull a 900° in a competition. Kinda nice, right?
Now you can yank a 900° of your own, or a Kickflip McTwist, or a 540° Board Varial with Activision's top-notch tribute to the undisputed o.g. of the extreme sports world.
Pro Skater is a game that caters to real skaterboarders. It only takes a few minutes of gameplay before you realize that the development team at Edge of Reality spent a lot of time squeezing the brains of their all-star line-up of pros. It's like they hammered a tap in Hawk's forehead and let every trick he'd ever known spill out into the game.
If you've seen it in a Birdhouse video, you can recreate it in the game. Each of the ten pro skaters has a different arsenal of tricks, based on their real-world styles. Hawk is the only skater who can execute a 900°, Geoff Rowley is the only dude who yields to the power of the Darkslide, while Elissa Steamer flaunts her feminine flare by Primo Grinding 50-foot hand rails.
Even though the tricks are as authentic as the scabs on Chad Muska's elbows, the raddest thing about Pro Skater is its exaggerated airs and impossibly complex combo possibilities. This game lets you go big. When we say big, we mean 360° Ollie Impossibles to Neckbreak Grinds on the edge of 20-story buildings. Realistic? No. Fun? Aw yeah.
You'll have to master the art of creatively linking tricks together to earn big points. Complex combos also beef up your Special Meter, which allows you to execute each skater's best tricks. When your session is complete, an Instant Replay features lets you slobber over your run in a personal skate video.
Skating for the fun of it is fine, but if you like to eat you might want to turn it into a career. In Pro Skater's Career Mode, you have to take each skater through the game's nine courses. Your rider will earn new boards and become a better skater as you unlock new levels and place well in competitions.
Each skater has to unlock every level individually, which dramatically pumps up the replay value. Except for the competition stages, the main goal on every level is to collect five video tapes (we're guessing they're either Birdhouse vids or bootlegged copies of Gleaming the Cube).
Tapes are earned by completing the following tasks:
Hitting five targets
Finding the letters S-K-A-T-E
Earning a Hi Score
Earning a Pro Score
Finding a hidden tape
The single player game is enough to keep you busy for a long while, but the two player features in this Pak are outstanding. Two skaters can compete in three different Modes: Graffiti, Trick Attack or HORSE.
In Graffiti Mode, every time you land a trick on an obstacle it's tagged with your team color. Your competition can erase your tag by performing a better trick on the obstacle. The skater who tags the most territory within a set time limit wins.
Trick Attack is more straightforward. Two skaters rage on the same course; the player with the highest score at the conclusion wins.
HORSE plays just like the classic basketball game. One skater busts a trick on a particular ramp or handrail, then the next skater has to earn a higher score using the same obstacle. For you comedians out there, Activision has included an option to change the word from HORSE to the naughtiest insult you can muster.
Not only is Tony Hawk's Pro Skater the best skating game we've ever played, it stands out as one of the most impressive Paks in any game genre. Dope graphics, tight control and original design make Tony Hawk's Pro Skater a must-own for any skater, wannabe, or general fan of video games.

SKATEBOARDING LEGEND TONY HAWK TEAMS UP WITH ACTIVISION
TO CREATE TONY HAWK'S PRO SKATER
FOR THE PLAYSTATION GAME CONSOLE
World's Most Famous Skater Lends Expertise to Produce Ultimate Skateboarding Game
Santa Monica, CA, January 14, 1999 -- World renowned skateboard champion, Tony Hawk, has teamed up with Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) to create the ultimate skateboard experience, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, for the PlayStation game console. Hawk, one of the most popular personalities in extreme sports, will consult and star in the game which Activision expects to release this fall.
"We want Tony Hawk's Pro Skater to reflect Tony's signature style - an intense mix of acrobatics and hardcore technical skating," states Mitch Lasky, senior vice president, Activision Studios. "From kick-flips to crooked grinds, the game will entice anyone who has ever dreamed of soaring through the air on a 32" x 9" piece of wood."
Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as the "undisputed skateboard heavyweight of the world," Hawk consistently ranks first or second place in nearly every event he enters. Since 1981, he has thrilled fans across the globe while competing in national and international contests, including The ESPN Extreme Games, National Skateboard Association events and the Hard Rock World Championships.
"I have always wanted to help create a video game that represented the reality and excitement of professional skateboarding," said Hawk. "Activision has given me the opportunity to make this dream a reality. With their track record I know this will be a groundbreaking venture."
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater features a sophisticated trick and combo system that allows players to pull off hundreds of combinations of radical moves and death-defying stunts. Skaters can shred though real-world tracks with the speed and agility of a seasoned skateboarding professional. Littered with secret areas, shortcuts and hard-to-reach spots, the game's environments range from malls and freeways to elementary schools and congested downtown areas.
Offering several modes of play, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater includes a unique career mode that allows gamers to simulate the life of a real skater who begins as an unknown street skater and works his way up the ranks to become a multi-sponsored superstar. The game's two-player split-screen, points and time attack modes give skaters the ability to interact with other players, allowing them to compete on ramps and in skateparks for style points, race between various obstacles on the tracks or play a brutal game of tag. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is being developed for Activision by Neversoft Entertainment.
