I am always on the look out for a really solid racing game. The first and most important thing that I look for is how the car handles. Does the car turn perfectly around corners or does it skid? How does the suspension and handling of the car affect the control? Does the car stick to the road like crazy glue, or does it fly up in the air when traveling at high speeds over hills? I personally like simulation racing as opposed to arcade racing and Top Gear Rally fits my criteria perfectly to a tee. I may even add it to my select list of favorites.
Consoles Plus
Top Gear Rally beats Sega Rally on all other counts. 1. The Road isn't boxed in like in SR and players can drive right off the road into dirt, mud, sand, water, and keep on going. 2. Cars can, like we said, take flight in major crashes, and still land on their wheels ready to race. 3. Cars take damage, which never happened in SR. 4. There are more courses. 5. There are more cars. 6. There are secret passages. 7. And finally, the cars, at least the faster ones, feel better, with a more realistic physics model providing better overall realism. What can we say? -- except that we'll be playing this game for a long time coming. This is pure rally goodness.

Still, the hybrid on-road/off-road tracks are littered with hidden shortcuts, the two-player mode works well and every car can be customized, from the steering sensitivity to the paint job. Top Gear Rally does have some unfortunate flaws, but racing die-hards and rookies alike will find it worth a weekend whirl.
All Game Guide
Top Gear Rally offers up some of the most realistic rally racing on any console and definitely shouldn't be missed by anyone who follows the sport or just likes a brisk, fun racing game!

At first, the difficult control can put you off, but the longer you play, the more you'll appreciate the reality of this racer. This is the best racing sim for the N64.
