The Transformers: Beast Wars license has been kicked around for quite some time, and across a bunch of different platforms. Unfortunately for fans of the cartoon, nobody has been able to do it right. This latest attempt is no exception. Transmetals joins the ranks of second-rate fighting games for the N64. If you are a fan of the franchise, you might want to give it a try. Otherwise, save your money.

Gott, erbarme dich meiner!

It's not awful. We kept saying that every time we put the game in. We'd watch it for a while and say that. We'd play it for a short stint and say that. It's easy to say that it's not awful. In fact, Beast Wars fan boys may even like the experience. But after playing a mite longer, we started noticing that shots never nail the target, that enemies have pre-programmed AI to either sit there and take hits or retaliate with unblockable counters, and that the graphics have ruined our vision. If we could still see it, we'd might still say it's not awful. But, at this point, that seems kind of moot.

Proving that the rental market is a place to debut piss-poor products, Transformers: Beast Wars Transmetals fails to even meet the minimal expectations of rental-only titles. The rental market has seen its share of mediocre titles (Daikatana and International Track and Field 2000), its horrid titles (Carmageddon 64) and the rare title that exceeds expectations with solid gameplay (Duck Dodgers). While not reaching the level of Carmageddon 64, Beast Wars falls between the lines of mediocrity and utter crap. Even the PlayStation Beast Wars somehow seems to find itself in a better light when compared this disgusting N64 fighter wannabe. The horrible graphics, poor control scheme and extremely easy gameplay make Beast Wars a mind-numbing experience best forgotten. Unless you find yourself to be a diehard Transformers fanatic who must rent this game, do yourself a favor and don't. It may be a test of patience, but definitely not one of skill.

Transformers: Beast Wars Transmetals is a horrible, horrible mess of a fighting game whose retail purchase I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemies. Thankfully, nobody will have to endure the suffering a purchase would bring as it’s been released exclusively to rental at Blockbuster. Maybe there is some justice in the world short of cancellation.
