When judging a game clearly targeted at the younger gamer its often hard to find a balance between recognising that such games need to be accessible to their intended audience, and deciding when they've crossed the line into bad design. For the most part it's a line that Naruto manages to steer well clear of with characters and story that remain true to the style and spirit of the original source material and combat that offers an impressive degree of depth for a children's game. Unfortunately the package is let down by the genuinely poor enemy AI and missions that never really offer any variety beyond repetitive killing. How much these flaws would ruin the experience for a child who's itching for another Naruto game is debateable and probably depends on the sprog in question, but for more seasoned gamers they're enough to turn what could have been an enjoyable if somewhat limited piece of fluff-gaming into something of a missed opportunity.

Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles isn't an aggressively bad game, but there's just something rather bland and generic feeling about a lot of it. It's just not interesting enough to warrant attention from anyone not already devoted to the Naruto franchise. It offers something a bit different from the past few Naruto games released in the US, but even devotees have seen Naruto games with better production values.

Upon defeating the final boss of the game you immediately get credits, leaving you completely unfulfilled. If you wait through the credits (and the load screen!) there’s a little bit of dialogue which rubs salt in your wounds by basically saying “Well, that’s that. Nothing has changed at all, and your victory amounts to nothing! Congrats!” Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles is just a big teaser for the show itself can be most aptly summed up by a line of dialogue Naruto says towards the beginning – “Let’s go kick some butts, and advertise at the same time.”

Newcomers to the Naruto scene definitely won't get the most out of this though, and without at least a little knowledge of the subject matter some of the character relationships, dialogue and even parts of the basic premise might sail straight over your head. Still, if you do know your Kakashis from your Irukas, add a couple of points to the score and think about picking this up. For everyone else, games like Kingdom Hearts 2 and Ninja Gaiden offer far more substantial and rewarding adventures in a similar vein. Everyone's a winner, basically. Hurrah.
