For the NASCAR fans looking for the chance to pursue The Chase on their Xbox 360, stock car racing doesn’t get any better than NASCAR 08.

NASCAR 08 von EA Sports wurde für Fans erschaffen und kann wohl auch nur Fans der Serie begeistern. Freunde von Rennspielen haben auf der Xbox 360 die größte Auswahl an Rennspielen und von nun an dürfen sich Xbox 3600 Besitzer in der NASCAR Serie versuchen. Wer einfach nur ein gutes Rennspiel sucht, der ist bei etlichen anderen Titeln sicher besser bedient, aber NASCAR Fans greifen einzig und allein zu diesem Titel. Eine fordernde und abwechslungsreiche Singleplayer Karriere und ein 12 Spieler Xbox-Live Modus heizen ordentlich ein.

Trotzdem muss EA im kommenden Jahr nachbessern, denn vor allem die zwar starken, aber über zu weite Strecken blinden Gegner gehören noch einmal in die Fahrschule. Schön wäre es, wenn die Kontrahenten zudem das Eigenleben ihrer PS2-Gegenstücke an den Tag legen würden - damit ein Jeff Gordon auch auf der Strecke als solcher erkennbar ist. Überhaupt bekommen Besitzer der alten Konsole das umfangreichere Paket: Wer ausführlich an seiner Karriere feilen will und sich am Arcade-Gefühl nicht stört, wird auf PlayStation 2 glücklicher. Zumal die letzte Ausgabe nie in unseren Breiten erschien; der Abnutzungseffekt ist hierzulande weniger stark. Dafür hat der Kern des Spiels - Fahrphysik und Auftreten der Gegner - in Anbetracht der Konkurrenz aus eigenem Haus inzwischen endgültig ausgedient.

Eikä Nascar 08 lopulta kuitenkaan ole hassumpi autopeli, mikäli auton asetusten virittely ja tarkan ajolinjan pitäminen kiinnostavat. Viritysmahdollisuudet ovat todella tarkat ja osaamaton tuunausmestari tekee autostaan hyvin äkkiä täysin ajokelvottoman. Arcade-kaahaajille NASCAR 08 ei tarjoa yhtikäs mitään: vaikka haasteet ovatkin lyhyitä ja nopeita pikkupelejä, ei pelkästään niitä pelaamalla tästä teoksesta saa iloa irti nimeksikään. NASCAR on yhtä aikaa sekä mielenkiinnoton, pitkäveteinen, ruma ja vaikea että haastava, tarkkuutta vaativa ja teknisesti monipuolinen peli. Kehän ajaminen sopii pääasiassa vain lajiin vihkiytyneille tai puhdasta kilpabensiiniä suonissaan kantaville.

Schade EA, dass ein Lizenzpaket dieser Art so leichtfertig vergeben wurde und den Weg in ein unterdurchschnittliches NextGen-Spiel fand. Denn so präsentiert sich NASCAR 08 in vielerlei Hinsicht. Angefangen vom mageren Umfang und den sich oft wiederholenden Herausforderungen, bis hin zur schwach aufpolierten CurrentGen-Grafik, der unausgereiften Steuerung, welche besonders Neulingen schwer fällt, und den schlechten Soundeffekten. Es fehlt an allen Ecken und Enden an Balance und Feintuning, auch wenn der Titel durchaus seine positiven Seiten hat. Ein realistisches Rennen über mehrere Stunden, über 40 andere Fahrzeuge auf dem Kurs sowie zahlreiche Originalstrecken und ein forderndes Gameplay bieten nur wenige Rennsimulationen. Unterm Strich ist dies jedoch zu wenig und so bleibt NASCAR 08 nur das Mittelmaß.

NASCAR 08 is actually an enjoyable game that won't disappoint as long as you're not hoping for a hard as nails simulation. Not having played a NASCAR game for some time I can't honestly say if NASCAR 08 is an improvement on the previous games in the series but taken on its own merits, NASCAR 08 is a solid racer. It's a shame that there is no online mode however, as I feel an enjoyable online mode or two is really what the game could have done with. Graphically the game is a little disappointing and the game could have been better in its provision for deaf gamers but if you're looking for a good NASCAR game to play on your PlayStation 2 then NASCAR 08 is certainly worth considering.

It makes it confusing to really guess who the game’s geared towards, as it potentially puts off both the hardcore and casual NASCAR fans that just want to jump into the career mode and have fun. Everything else seems to be fun enough, but it just doesn’t have the legs that the game really should have if the core mechanics weren’t so frustrating. Definitely rent the game first and see if you can stomach the licenses and contract races, otherwise you’ll most likely want to stay away and hope NASCAR 09 takes a different approach to make the fun parts of the game easily accessible next year.

In the end, the game feels more like a sixty dollar roster update than another addition in the franchise. Ironically, the cars sound great and racing is interesting once you get the hang of it. However, with so many omissions, it's difficult to recommend this game to anyone who is not a die-hard fan of NASCAR. Even then, they might be better off sticking with an old copy or purchasing '07 from the bargain bin. The Chase is the only feature that really stands out, but even that needs work. Perhaps with a bit more time in the shop, this will be a game worthy of its NASCAR history. As the game stands now, it's a few cylinders short of a working engine.

I’ve heard of NASCAR fans refer to their tremendously boring hobby as “the USA’s biggest sport”, but I’ve yet to actually meet one of these people in the flesh. I’m convinced their bodies exist in some kind of non-visible spectrum, as I see countless Dale Earnhardt bumper stickers (usually in Wal-Mart parking lots), but never a walking, talking NASCAR fan. Regardless, this game is apparently for them….and definitely not for me. It features extremely basic A.I., something called “the Car of Tomorrow” that looks a lot like cars from today, and all the driving-in-circles you can handle. Probably a good idea to stay away from this one if you live north of Arkansas.

Nascar 2008 should have been a game that really showed off the PlayStation 3 at its best. It has all the bare ingredients to be a showcase racer, but the end result is very disappointing. The developer has clearly rushed this out without putting much thought into it and all that is left is a basic, shallow racer that just doesn’t stand up to the competition.

Listen! If you’re a fan of the sport and you own a set of NASCAR Underoos for each day of the week, then you already own the game and you just came here to write me hate mail. But for those of us looking for a better more improved NASCAR driving experience on a console, it’s best to pull out 07 on previous systems or wait for EA to take this design back to the garage for ’09.

This game is not worth anyone's time unless they are a die hard NASCAR fan and can get the US version on import. Without any decent multiplayer or online support, it's boring, tedious, and wholly without merit. Two decent ideas do not make up for the simply shoddy presentation and gameplay of this title, and Gamestyle doubts this will be racing into a chart position any time soon.
