NASCAR Racing 2003 Season

The last in a long line of NASCAR titles from Papyrus, this final chapter is easily the finest in the series. NASCAR Racing: 2003 Season has the legs to reign for a long time as the de facto standard-bearer for the genre and it offers a rock-solid base from which the third-party mod community can begin working it's mojo. The King is dead. Long live the King.

When I read that the racing gurus at Papyrus would no longer be making NASCAR sims, the first thing I did was dig for corroborating evidence. I just could not believe they would abandon their cash cow. Unfortunately for them, either EA outbid them, or for some other financial reason Papyrus couldn't continue the way they were, and thus we are faced with the reality that NASCAR Racing 2003 is their last such title. So they "pulled out the stops" as designer Rich Yasi put it, to give us the best possible experience, and set the bar as high as possible for EA.

Die Gegner-KI: hervorragend. Der Motoren-Sound: extra knackig. Die Mehrspieler- Rennen: ein einzigartiges Erlebnis! Formel-1-verwöhnte Rennfahrer müssen sich mit der fremden Nascar-Welt zwar erstmal vertraut machen. Tutorial und Fahrhilfen ermöglichen aber jedem den Sprung aufs Podest – Lenkrad und gute Englischkenntnisse vorausgesetzt. Bei einem Preis von 30 Euro kann es nur heißen: Gentlemen, start your engines!

This would be an Editor’s Choice Award game if the target audience wasn’t so narrow. See that Ballistics Report on the previous page? Well, you’ll see it again one day, as the picture next to the definition of ‘nit-picking’. Much like the movie Gosford Park, it’s just not something you can appreciate the first, second or even third time around. Like Quake, it’s not just a game that you get better at the more you play it – it’s a game that gets better for you as you learn to understand the intricacies.

NASCAR Racing Season 2003 is een waardige en mooie bekroning voor deze succesvolle racereeks van Sierra. Het biedt een heel realistische race-ervaring en tegelijkertijd zet het de deur open voor nieuwkomers door enkele handige hulpmiddeltjes te integreren.

В игру, конечно же, попали все 23 трека североамериканского чемпионата, причем авторы настаивают на их абсолютной достоверности. К примеру, в асфальтовых текстурах якобы присутствуют все трещинки и ямки с настоящих трасс. Команды, болиды и гонщики численностью, составом и боевой раскраской соответствуют данным сезона 2003 года, который, как обычно, начался почти одновременно с выходом проекта — 8 марта в Дайтоне, а знаменитое «Gentlemen, start your engines!» произносится на каждой трассе своим, «реальным» голосом.

Les sensations de pilotage sont excellentes, le moteur physique est impeccable, le graphisme est splendide... Que demander de plus pour un jeu de course ? NASCAR 2003 est un très bon titre qui devraient faire changer d'avis ceux qui regardent avec dédain cette discipline.

Au final, Nascar Racing 2003 Season n'évolue qu'assez peu par rapport à son grand frère, mais les quelques changements qu'il instaurent valent la peine puisqu'ils contribuent à renforcer le réalisme de cette simulation. Reste que comme toujours, le titre est réservé aux fans déjà conquis par ce sport, les autres trouvant difficilement leur compte. Mais pour vous, les amoureux de Nascar, c'est du tout bon.
