I'm not a big Kobe Bryant fan. Maybe it stems from the All-Star Game where he waved off a pick from The Mailman to take Jordan one-on-one. Perhaps it's his pseudo-deep Adidas commercials. Either way, give me a Dirk Nowitski, Steve Francis, or Tracy McGrady any day. Still, I endured eight instruction book pictures of Kobe and countless menu action shots to play this game. While Left Field made a few Courtsides on Nintendo 64, since this is the first one in a while and on a new system, I consider it a first-generation product. As such, it's a pretty rocking title that can hang with the b-ball big boys.

Having said all that, Courtside is a challenging title that you can enjoy and recognize quality in its craftsmanship. I suggest you check Courtside 2002 out, even if it’s a rental on your part, and when Sega releases NBA 2k2 on the Cube you can decide who rules the court. Courtside 2002 is worth a look.

If you like to touch up your ball instead of beating it with a studded boot, and you want a suite of features which makes NBA Live 2002 look like an empty shell of a game, then Courtside should be your first port of call.

GamePro (US) (Jan 14, 2002)
Customization of players is deep in some areas, weak in others there are more tattoos than hairstyles, which makes zero sense. However, if you turn off the commentary and learn to live with the animation quirks, NBA Courtside 2002 offers a fair amount of fun.
GameSpy (Jan 22, 2002)
While there are plenty of reasons to fire up Kobe and NBA Courtside 2002 with a few buddies, all of these really can do nothing to stop the freight train that is Allen Iverson and the finest hoop game around. Kobe may have the championship rings, but in the gaming arena Iverson's 2k2, coming to the GameCube in April, is a world-beater.
GameSpot (Jan 14, 2002)
NBA Courtside 2002 is solid in terms of gameplay and spectacular in the graphics department. However, the problems with its AI, the lack of zone defenses, the control issues, and the generally bland presentation keep it from achieving hoops simulation greatness. Still, Courtside 2002 is currently the only basketball simulation available on the GameCube, and, as such, it deserves a close look from basketball fans.
It may rank third in the standings, but I have a feeling that GameCube owners will be quite pleased with what Left Field has pieced together.
IGN (Jan 23, 2002)
Left Field has finally delivered its very anticipated NBA Courtside 2002, a hoops simulation for GameCube that follows in the footsteps of the two NBA Courtside titles released for the Nintendo 64. Courtside 2002 marks the release of the first basketball title on GameCube, offering up a smooth gameplay experience and impressive visuals. However, for the more dedicated basketball enthusiast, it's apparent that Courtside 2002 is without its refinements.

Two great features involve the use of the passing and dribbling. Passing the ball can be easily done by pressing your primary button. This technique is nothing different than any other basketball game, and still is used more than any other form of passing. Nintendo takes advantage of the secondary analog stick. Using this passing method allows you to give-and-go and blind pass. Although at first it becomes slightly quirky to use the "C" stick, it truly adds another dimension to a one dimension styled game.

Gameplanet (Jul 30, 2002)
Until NBA Live 2003 arrives (or NBA 2K2 gets a PAL conversion) NBA Courtside 2002 doesn't really have any competition. It's hard to get too excited about this game but if you're a basketball fan with a Gamecube it's really your only choice. Having said that there is plenty of fun to be had with Courtside, just don't expect anything revolutionary.

Game Revolution (Jan, 2002)
Courtside 2002 is an all-around upgrade to its N64 predecessors. The game features all 29 NBA teams, complete with team specific arenas and relatively up-to-date rosters.
Game Critics (Feb 20, 2002)
Courtside 2002, however futile at this point, does try to include a few innovations. The most prolific feature is that the analog C-Stick is used for passing. In theory, this sounds like a great idea (pass in the direction pushed), but in execution, it isnt perfect. It worked as intended most of the time, but it also still failed to deliver the proper pass more times than I would have liked. Like most of this game, its a work in progress.
