www.nintendo.com – Nintendo 64:
The first NBA Jam game for the Nintendo 64 may not remind you of the old NBA Jam at all. In fact, NBA Jam 99 from Acclaim is a five-on five basketball simulation game, not the two-on-two arcade game we've come to associate with the Jam series. But what's in a name? After all, graphics and game play are much more critical than the title on the box when developing a game for dedicated sports fans.

While NBA Jam 99 will feature the now-obligatory 29 NBA teams and floors, developer Iguana West (the Utah branch of Austin, Texas-based Iguana) hopes to bring new life to the action by using Acclaim's Hi-Rez, 3-D polygonal sports engine. This is the same graphics engine used in All-Star Baseball and NFL Quarterback Club ?99.

In the switch to simulation, NBA Jam 99 will incorporate authentic team playing styles, such as the Sonics' trap, the Celtics' press and the Bulls' triangle offense. Player's signature moves and free throw routines are also in the works, including Scottie Pippen's finger roll and Allen Iverson's cross-over dribble. Iguana's developers worked with scouts from the Utah Jazz to ensure realistic moves and behavior.

NBA Jam 99 will feature five modes: Shoot Out, with both a free-throw and three-point shooting contest; Exhibition, a single-game mode; Season, complete with the actual 1998-99 NBA schedule; Custom Season, in which players will be able to change the length of the season and rearrange the schedule; and Playoff, in which players can skip the season and head straight for the finals. Historic sims allow you to relive classic showdowns. You can also set up a nail-biting last-second situation.

Game play is a major focus of Iguana West's development efforts. While some basketball games allow tons of uncontested drives to the hole or unlimited three-point baskets, NBA Jam 99's artificial intelligence will prevent such unrealistic hijinks. An innovative play-calling feature should let players select from nearly 50 offensive and defensive plays, greatly enhancing control over the game.

Detailed scouting reports give you the lowdown on your tall men. Other features include a rookie draft, in which the computer generates a pool of rookies to develop, plus general manager and coach modes, which allow budding Pat Rileys to micromanage their teams.

Always one to sign up the big names, Acclaim used Stephon Marbury of the Minnesota Timberwolves for the game's 500-plus motion-captured moves. TNT's Kevin Harlan makes the play-by-play calls while NBC's Bill Walton stirs in plenty of spicy color commentary. Floppy-socked Net Keith Van Horn graces the box.

Utah fans will be happy to hear their own Dan Roberts performing the arena announcements. Acclaim's "Sweat the details" strategy even extends to the soundtrack, which will include such arena hits as the Knicks' "Go New York Go!"

NBA Jam 99 gives a good-looking boost to Acclaim's rapidly rising rep for stylish sports games.
