Acclaim's added a few options for the home release that don't appear in the arcade version; for instance, during a special mode, randomly-appearing icons on the court give players temporary powerups, like turbo, 3-point accuracy and super dunking (and not just from half court this time, either; prepare to pull off slams from the opposite basket). Random, exciting elements like these keep the action lively and make NBA Jam Tournament Edition worth a few thousand replays.

Capitalizing on the unbridled success of the first NBA Jam, Acclaim released this fine sequel which retains the gameplay of the original while spicing things up with interesting new options. Each team now has three players to choose from instead of two, and you can substitute between quarters. Tournament Edition's gameplay places more emphasis on defense, so you can expect to see more steals and blocked shots. The expanded options menu lets you customize more aspects of the game, as well as enabling "hot spots" on the floor (worth up to ten points), power-up icons, and a "juice mode" that speeds up the action to extreme levels. But the most valuable new addition is the inclusion of a much-need four-player mode. Statistics are now saved via battery backup instead of a long password. This is a worthy sequel, and fans of the original would be wise to pick this one up.

If you're a Jam fan, then you've been waiting all year for this version. Although short on the graphics and sound, this one has "Hoop, Hoop, Hooray" written all over it.

First there was NBA Jam, a revolutionary four player arcade game that made more money than just about anything, ever. Then there was the inevitable ports to systems ... lots and lots and lots and lots of systems (so many systems it's easier to count the consoles NBA Jam is NOT on). And now there's the sequel, NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, which is more of the same.

The SNES version of Jam still has the slight edge over the Genesis in graphics, sound and gameplay (putting the Turbo button right under your index finger on the SNES pad sure beats the hell out of the Genesis control configuration).

SEGA 32XThe Video Game Critic
To be honest, I wasn't too enthused about reviewing this game. I've played so many versions of NBA Jam, and they've all been pretty much the same. But this 32X version really stands out, despite the fact that control is awkward using the Genesis control pad.

Absolutely unbelievable. This game totally blows away the arcade game. Although I'm not the biggest fan of sports games, NBA Jam: TE on the Playstation is such a blast to play and is so addictive that I just couldn't ignore it. With graphics that eclipses the coin-op game, tons of cool codes, great sound and perfect control, NBA Jam: TE on the Playstation is by far the best version to date. Buy it.

The bottom line is while NBA Jam was great, NBA Jam Tournament Edition is better that great. Simply put, this game is an awesome hoops title that keeps what was good about the first game and adds more players, features, modes, and other stuff to make one of the best arcade-style sports games ever. Plus, its four player capabilities mean more sports fans can get in on the action. Even if you already have the original NBA Jam in your collection, you'll definitely want to pick up this excellent follow-up. This is one cart to slam dunk into your Genesis!

The graphics are basically the same as the previous versions, with some new dunks and extra animations on defense. The SNES additional colors allow for sharper text, better digitized pictures and give the players a slightly more three-dimensional look on the court. There are plenty of new speech samples which sound good in both games, but hearing the new announcer saying "Boomshakalaka" is almost enough to make you plug in the original game.

GenesisVideo Games & Computer Entertainment
Even so, given all of the game's new features, such as the practice mode, new player ratings for power, steals and "clutch", tough new Special and Superstar teams to player after beating 27 NBA teams and a host of new hidden power-ups and players, Tournament Edition is an excellent sequel that no true NBA Jam fan will want to miss out on.

Despite the impressive additions, casual Jammers might find the action a bit too familiar to actually plunk down the cash. Hardcore hoops fans, though, will face enough challenges to keep them dunkin' and bumpin' for quite some time with this strong arcade conversion.

What can I say? Scaling big-headed players, more colors and baby mode! Once again, Acclaim has delivered a sparkling edition of NBA Jam: TE. I only wish the 32X had better sound. 32X owners hankering for some arcade sports power will really appreciate this version of the Jam!

NBA Jam: Tournament Edition also features an updated player rosters, rookie and all-star teams, over 120 NBA stars, including Rodman (my personal favorite), Ewing and Hill, secret codes, hidden players, super power-ups and the ability to choose from three to five players per team. And wait until you put it into Juice Mode. If you're looking for a fast-paced game with characters who have really big heads, then look no further. Other Jaguars sports games currently available: Charles Barkley Basketball, Brett Hull NHL Hockey, SuperCross 3D and Fever Pitch.

Considering the only competition on the Jaguar is the unplayable mess White Men Can't Jump, Jam T.E. has a nice home here. It certainly seems to fit better here than it does on the crowded 16-bit consoles. It's a classic, and it deserves to be.

It's undeniable that NBA Jam is a classic. It paved the way for more Midway sports games like NFL Blitz and the recent MLB Slugfest. If your dying to play the game and an arcade is nowhere to be found, this is the way to go. The extra options, codes, and customization options are worth the price of admission to anyone who enjoys the gameplay.

JaguarJust Games Retro
NBA Jam remains one of the best examples of pick-up-and-play sports action, and the Tournament Edition simply adds more to a winning formula. The Jaguar benefits from having mostly faithful graphics, though the generic music is a definite letdown. There's also nothing here that wasn't on the Saturn or PSX, making its technical accomplishments over the 16-bit versions a little less significant. Still, best basketball on the Jag.

Now here's an improvement for the Genesis version. Animations are better than before with more high-flyin' dunks and realistic stadium animations. With the new special icons included, the gameplay rises to new heights. More players are involved here as you can sub in your favorites. After seeing this, you'll wonder where the coin slot is located.

NBA Jam is here to stay! It's practically on every system on the market. I wonder if people are getting sick of Jam? But, I have to admit this is the closest translation from the original arcade. The 32X has really shown it's true capabilities here, with cool scrolling of players. The sounds have improved greatly as well. If you guys are still deciding which one to buy, think about this one.

PlayStationElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Everywhere you go, NBA Jam: TE is in your face. It does get a bit redundant seeing this game on every platform, but this translation for the Playstation is done superbly well. I can't imagine how this game can get any better unless it comes out on the Ultra 64. In the end, it's good ol' Jam with better graphics.

Un basket arcade très réussi, avec tout ce que le terme suppose de fureur et de rapidité. Et quel scrolling !

Regardless, Jam 32X's gameplay is absorbing enough to overcome these flaws. If you own the Genesis cart, upgrade with caution - but first-time buyers could dribble down either court.

Finally, one of the hottest arcade titles of all time finds it's way to the Jaguar. This Jam TE looks more like the 32X version, where the oversized heads of the players look like they've been pasted on.

SEGA 32XDigital Press - Classic Video Games
If you're comparing the two cartridge versions, than the 32X gets the nod simply because of the controller. The Jaguar pad was never meant for this game. Compare this to the CD ports, and the PS One and Saturn versions take the crown. Those remain the best home versions of the game you'll find. There's still a lot to like here on the 32X and this isn't one to pass up based on Acclaim's resume on the console.

There are some games that just won't die. You know, the ones that resurface constantly in the form of sequels, spinoffs, remakes, special editions, and ports of all the above until the franchise finally reaches a state we here at Sega-16 like to call "overexposure." NBA Jam is a shining example of this Tribble-esque proliferation. The original arcade release turned heads of both sports fans and those who'd never shot a free throw with its wildly fast gameplay and crazy, superhuman stunts. Predictably, there was high demand for a home version, and Midway answered those demands several times over. In fact, the Genesis and its two add-ons are home to no less than six variations of the formula. The original, NBA Jam, hit both the Genesis and the Sega CD; the enhanced remake NBA Jam Tournament Edition popped up on the Genesis and the 32X. The souped-up spiritual sequel NBA Hangtime and roster remix College Slam again found audiences on the stock Genesis.

OK, the Jag is a 64-bit system right? So then why isn't this the best version of NBA Jam? The graphics are on par with the SNES, as is everything else except the music, which isn't as good. In fact, the only thing that looks next-gen is the title screen. If compared to White Men Can't Jump (the only other Jag b-ball game), this of course destroys it, so it is a must own for Jag players, but I was expecting much more from Atari's first big license.

NBA Jam T.E. also features a Practice Mode to work on your teamwork, but it's not a big deal. It's just you and your teammate on the court. So the big question is whether this game warrants a purchase if you have the original. Yes, unless you hated NBA Jam, because the extra arcade options make the game more enjoyable. Yet it's a hesitant yes...

When playing with friends the fun factor is doubled. NBA Jam T.E. is good enough that it can keep you glued to your television screen for a couple of hours at a time.

NBA Jam: TE for the Saturn is a perfect translation. All the characters, codes, hot sound and off-the-wall hoop action are here for you to enjoy. The zoom effect is seamless and player faces are distinguishable. All in all, you won't feel ripped off when you pick up your copy of this overrated title. Rest assured that all of the cheap plays, inaccurate player profiles and repetitive, unintelligent strategies are packed into this little disc. That said, it is addictive as hell.

PlayStationIGN
The action is fast paced and intense, and by keeping the court limited to four players, the ball moves around quite a bit. Perhaps the title's best aspect is its simplicity in game design -- just grab that ball and sink it! And shooting hoops has never been so much fun. The outlandish ways to dunk -- flips, smoke, etc. -- only add to the wackiness. Excellent.

JaguarElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Can this game be in every system out there? As far as Jaguar titles go, this game is done pretty well. Of course, the graphics and sound slightly change for the better, but we are talking about the Jaguar here. Remember, do the math. In the end, it's another NBA Jam: TE for another system. That's great...the end.

Give this CD a rent before purchasing it. The new options are welcome, but the few missing effects and flaky A.I. will make you think twice before you make your Playstation a JamStation.

NBA Jam: TE for the Game Boy is a great game for people who are confined fro medical reasons. Everyone else would be better off playing hoops in the 'hood.
25
PlayStationThe Video Game Critic
The 2D graphics have been altered dramatically. The camera is zoomed in so tight that you can actually see the digitized faces of the players. Unfortunately you also see much less of the court, making it hard to tell what's going on around you. All the options from previous NBA Jams are back, including the "icons" and "juice mode". NBA Jam T.E. retains a slick arcade presentation, but in terms of fun, the franchise clearly ran out of juice with this disappointing edition.
