Having knocked off most of the competition, EA Sports's flagship b-ball title marks its tenth anniversary with a bevy of enhancements.

The key here is Freestyle Control via the C-Stick, which allows for signature moves, mid-air passing, control over players away from the ball and more. But while the new 10-Man Freestyle feature offers intense realism in the way the players react to each other (double teams, screens, pick-and-roll plays), the game's overall complexity means you'll have some learnin' to do before you can move to the head of the league.



Once you get the controls down pat, though, you'll be thoroughly impressed by the depth of the revamped Dynasty mode (drafting college players, running training camp, trading draft picks), unlockables (175 shoes, including LeBron James's Air Zoom Generation, plus 100 jerseys), 10-man motion capture (a first for sports games), and of course the free-flowing play. AI has been juiced, with a special focus on rebounding and defense. You can fine-tune AI in many different ways. You can also run team-specific sets off a single button.



Marv Albert and Mike Fratello provide commentary, while Outkast, Jermaine Dupri, Sean Paul, Chingy, Freeway and the Black Eyed Peas offer up exclusive tracks. All NBA arenas have been faithfully recreated, including championship banners, retired jerseys and more. Referees and courtside photographers add to the you-are-there ambience.



Bottom Line


Casual players might prefer EA's cartoony NBA Street Vol. 2, but NBA Live 2004 is a powerhouse sim that rewards players who stick with it.

Authentische Präsentation
