It feels like it was only a few weeks ago when Basketball season ended. It is now Autumn and the new basketball season is about to start up again, with hopes that the Mavericks will make it into the finals this year. Just as a new sports season starts, EA is waiting with keen anticipation to release the latest game using updated technology, AI, and other goodies. Will NBA Live 2004 live up to EA’s other sports franchise this year? Read on to find out!

Overall, this is such a monumental improvement in what had been a ignored and dieing franchise that not only did EA stymie SEGA’s growth into the market, but they may have slapped them back a few years. Now after having played SEGA’s offering this year, SEGA probably did enough of that themselves…

But what makes NBA Live 2004 a great game is that it’s simply fun to play. Eking out wins against tougher teams won’t be easy, which means you need to use the practice modes to hone your skills before games. Add Internet play and excellent commentary from Mary Albert and Mike Fratello, and NBA Live will leave round ball fans happy for some time.

This is the only game in town for GameCube owners, so what’s the damage? NBA Live 2004 ramps up the defense and piles on the features for an impressive all-around game, but some game-balance issues remain.

NBA Live is about taking it to the hoop and ramming the rock down your opponent's throat. It's about coming up big on D, elevating your game to the next level, and batting that dunk back into the stands. It's about freestyle, ankle-breaking moves, where all the defender can do is sit and marvel at your Air Force Ones as you rise toward the rim.

XboxIGN
Like every game from EA, it's only online on the PS2, so if you have multiple systems, that's the one to get as other than that feature (or missing feature as your case may be) the game is pretty much identical across the board. Thanks to Live's controls and in-your-face gameplay, it's one of the better basketball games to hit the cyber court this year, even if it is more of a two-player arcade game, rather than a sim. Any way you look at it though, the game is fun, even if it does have some flaws that keep it from the top of the list.

GameCubeIGN
As you play the game, you're given a list of both individual and team goals that, when accomplished, you're rewarded with points that you can later spend in the NBA Store. There you can purchase all of your favorite Nike shoes like Air Jordans, a pair of matching socks, new headbands, or even a fancy throwback from your favorite team's heyday. You can then go in and equip these accessories on your favorite players, although not all accessories can be used in all modes.

NBA Live 2004 will satisfy many basketball fans, and sees a definite turn towards a simulation style game rather than high scoring affairs. Even with that change in gameplay, the game isn’t a whole lot better than it was last year. There are still too many steals and too many blocks (Corey Maggette has six blocks at the half as I write this), but at least the offense was curbed a bit from last year. From the looks I got at E3 this year, ESPN Basketball looks like it will be king of the court, but NBA Live runs a respectable second place.

All in all, NBA Live 2004 is a very solid game and one worthy of resurrecting the argument of which franchise is better, EA's or Sega's. This time around the nod goes to Sega, but Live isn't too far behind anymore. Perhaps if the developers spent a little less time implementing real shoes into the game, and more time refining the online play mode things would have been a little better, but I guess that's what next year is for.

Overall, NBA Live 2004 is a very strong showing and definitely a worthy contender in this year's basketball field. The only thing I wish I could change would be the inclusion of online play for the Xbox. It's a shame that if you want to play EA Sports games online you have to do so on the PS2. But if you're looking for a good offline hoops game, NBA Live 2004 stacks up nicely in the paint!

You know that the basketball season is getting close when you start to see games like NBA Live being released. EA has been doing basketball games for a while now, dating back to the "vs." games on the Genesis and SNES to the current NBA Live series. The series has always been a blast to play, and it has provided one of the best basketball experiences in a video game. Lately the Live series has faltered some, and EA has started to feel the pressure from Sega Sports' NBA 2k series. Last year’s game looked to help pick the series up out of its slump. Does NBA Live 2004 continue that progress?

There are several modes of play, the main ones being Play Now, a quick-game mode, Dynasty, a simulated season with reward points earned for certain met goals, Sport Bio, a reward system tied to owning multiple EA Sports games, and 1-on-1, where players can play a game of one-on-one against current or past basketball greats.

NBA Live 2004 ist ein gutes Sportspiel für Arcade Sympathisanten. Wer ohne große Einarbeitungszeit ein paar sehenswerte Aktionen aufs Parkett zaubern will, liegt hier goldrichtig.

Overall NBA Live 2004 does a fantastic job of representing the professional basketball game. Despite its flaws NBA Live 2004 is a great basketball game that should be enjoy by anyone that is a basketball fan. Everything from the pacing of an NBA basketball game to the simple mannerism of a NBA event, NBA Live has it. For the first time EA's slogan just about fits the game that it is selling, if it's in the game, then it's in the game. Besides a few animation problems and stupid passing controls NBA Live 2004 is a great title for basketball fans that want to live out their dreams of making it to the pro ranks. Just forget that the other NBA Lives came out (expect for last year's) and pick up this season's version, you will be glad you did.

Unless you want to go online with the PS2 version, $50 is a lot to pay for a new roster each year. Add in sloppy, almost cheap, defense and a Dynasty mode that's not finely tuned and you have an update only the hardcore Live 2004 followers should pick up.

But even so, NBA Live 2004 offers a very good game of roundball. The bevy of new moves and increased difficulty will surely please fans, though more work could have been done polishing the graphics and smoothing out some of the gameplay quirks. As it is, this is a solid drive to the basket.

Despite these miscues, NBA Live 2004 delivers an excellent basketball experience. Hardcore players will appreciate the added control brought by the new features, like off-the-ball control and the jump stop. The separation of the dunk and shoot buttons is an especially great move that, we think, will be copied by many other games in time. Those who found last year's version to be too much of a track meet will appreciate the toned-down pace of Live 2004.

GameCubeGame Revolution
NBA Live 2004 features the typical gameplay modes of Exhibition, Season, Practice and Playoffs, but also goes bigger than before with its Dynasty Mode. You play the GM and handle responsibilities like salaries and rosters as well as new Training events for your team. You acquire points for accomplishing tasks in-game (triple-double, score 100 points, etc.), which you can then spend on team or player Training sessions to improve stats. It’s not really user-controlled, but the ability to change your team’s rating mid-season is a good one. Unfortunately, you’re not rewarded extra for playing at higher difficulty settings, so it takes a strong moral backbone not to just switch it to Rookie when you want to rout the opponent and rack up tons of points.

It isn't easy being an ex-athlete-turned-game-reviewer. Where once I had dreams of fadeaway jumpers and no-look passes, I now suffer from nightmares of hiccupping framerates and long load times. Damn you, stunted gene pool, damn you!

The NBA Live series has long-carried a reputation as an enjoyable, though fast-paced, basketball game. Last year's NBA Live 2003 certainly lived up to that billing--and then some. It was a great game in its own right, but many criticized the game's breakneck pace and extremely arcadelike feel. While no one will confuse this year's edition with an ultrarealistic rendition of professional basketball, NBA Live 2004 definitely takes a couple of steps closer to being a more serious simulation, with a slower pace and more emphasis on defense and team play. With several additional features, as well as online play and improvements to the game's graphics, sound, and overall polish, NBA Live 2004 is a great game for Live fans and general basketball fans alike.

NBA Live 2004 does his job when it comes to new additions. The all new “off the ball play” together with the seperate dunk/shoot button make for a fresh gameplay. The passing system on the other hand often results in a turnover (= frustration). Graphically it’s good enough, especially the animations look great. For now NBA Live 2004 is the best B-ball game out there but Sega’s ESPN Basketball could turn the tide as it has some promising new game modes. If you’re just looking for a fun sports game NBA Live 2004 delivers!

NBA Live 2004 requires patience on offence and moderation on defence. The game's implementation of this balance is outstanding and this year's version is the best basketball title for this reason alone.

The atmosphere, presentation, AI and control make for a demanding experience, but the balance of the game rarely leads to frustration. The front end still needs improving, but the game itself is well crafted and as complete as could be expected.

NBA Live 2004 is just what you would expect from EA Sports – a slightly polished version of last year’s game, with some heed paid to criticisms of the previous version. This has the result that hardcore fans will rush out to buy it on release day, but those who bought last year’s version will need to consider how badly they need these tweaks.

XboxDaily Game
NBA Live 2004 is making strides in the right direction to becoming the ultimate basketball video game. Some may say the game leans a little to the arcade-like feel. I say it’s a good balance between simulation and arcade game-play. This is a great looking, great sounding and great playing basketball game that every fan of the sport should have in their game collection.

The match-up between NBA Live 2004 and ESPN NBA Basketball 2K4 has never been as close as it is this year. Live offers a large selection of special features, online play for the PlayStation 2 version, and a healthy dose of fun. If the offensive and defensive balance were just a bit more fine-tuned, and the Xbox and GameCube versions had online support, NBA Live 2004 would have the legs for multiple plays through the Dynasty mode and a clear shot as the top hoops game. Still, GameCube owners don't have any other hoop sim choices this year, so it's the definitely the top game for them at least.

XboxGameSpy
In the second year of its rebuilding process, NBA Live continues to look good. While the game's new button scheme may take a while to get used to, the amount of control it gives you over your entire team is impressive. Add to that the crazy-deep dynasty mode and some of the dead-on likenesses of the players, and it becomes clear that The House of Madden knows just as much about roundball as it does about pigskin, pucks, and left turns at Daytona.
80
GameCubeGameSpy
Like all of this year's EA games, Live 2004 has made a serious turn to the sim-side of things. While 2003 was a truer-to-life hoops game than previous years had been, the game was far too offense-friendly. You could almost drive the lane in your sleep. Of course, a lot of that might have been development's desire to show off the coolness and versatility of the game's new right-stick freestyling ability. 2004 brings the defense back onto the court. You won't be jamming it down your opponent's throat every trip down the floor, but having to read the defense and look a bit harder for the open man makes those occasional monster dunks that much more enjoyable.

NBA Live 2004 delivers a great basketball experience, if you can overlook the control issues. Hardcore players will appreciate the added control brought by the new features, like off-the-ball control and the jump stop. Those who found last year's version to be too much of a track meet will appreciate the toned-down pace of Live 2004. They'll also appreciate the tweaks made to the defensive side of the ball, which add a lot more depth to the game. While it will mostly appeal to those who want a game with an arcade slant, NBA Live 2004 makes a worthy addition to any basketball fan's collection.

Wilt Chamberlain versus Bill Russell. Bird versus Magic. Kobe versus the State of Colorado. Basketball has always been about great rivalries -- and you can add another one to the list. While EA Sports once owned the court, Sega Sports has been matching them shot for shot since it went multiplatform with its 2K -- now ESPN -- series two years ago. It's now year three of the rivalry, and EA Sports has cranked up the intensity. NBA Live 2004 picks up where 2003 left off and makes a strong argument for reclaiming the title.

So what do we have here? Well I think we have a decent to good game that could have been a great game, had it been cleaned up a little (maybe a lot). The lack of online support is also going to be a killer for quite a few gamers out there especially as its other two competitors have full online support. The developers have the right idea and are taking the game in the right direction, but I feel that 2004 may be the year that NBA LIVE truly shines. Here's hoping.

Also welcome is the ten-point motion capture that makes the player animations silky-smooth and fun to watch, if you have slightly blurred vision. Yes kids, it's that time again where we shake our heads at the pre-generational graphics from EA. The player models themselves are so terrible. EA can get away with it in Madden as per the helmets. But in the NBA, the lack of detail really dates the look of Live 2004.

WindowsGameSpy
NBA Live 2004 isn't quite there yet, but behind its problems, you can see a great game that is just waiting to come out. Hopefully EA Sports can continue to tweak and fine-tune the design -- it's a handful of important fixes from being an excellent basketball game.

Kids not into the whole "run your franchise thing" probably won't notice the flaws in NBA Live 2004. They'll enjoy the pretty, pretty dunks and the hip-hop soundtrack. More advanced teens will tire of the game's control problems both on the court and in the dynasty mode.
