Nein, diesmal schafft es NBA Live 98 nicht, an NHL 98 vorbeizuziehen. Das liegt an dem etwas langsameren Gameplay und der komplexeren Steuerung, die eine enorme Eingewöhnungszeit erfordert und ohne Mindestens-Vier-Button-Gamepad ohnehin kaum zu bewältigen ist. Dabei ist es durchaus fragwürdig, ob alle angebotenen Optionen, Spielzüge und Joystickmanöver überhaupt Sinn machen. Die runderneuerten Basketballer von EA zeigen sich von ihrer hardwarehungrigsten Seite – und das gilt auch für die 3Dfx-Version. Wer aber über einen schnellen Rechner verfügt, bekommt mit NBA Live 98 die optisch schönste und spielerisch anspruchsvollste Basketball- Sim aller Zeiten serviert. Dank des Voodoo-Chips scheint der PC den im Sportbereich lange führenden Konsolen momentan ein wenig enteilt zu sein. Ihnen dürfte das recht sein, oder?

NBA Live 98 strotzt vor Features und macht vor allem in grafischer Hinsicht eine ausgezeichnete Figur. Allerdings hat es Electronic Arts bei der Steuerung ein wenig übertrieben, denn die meisten Kommandos lassen sich nur mit viel Geduld und noch mehr Fingerspitzengefühl ausführen. Aber man wird ja schließlich nicht dazu gezwungen, alle Funktionen gleich zu Beginn auszureizen. Es empfiehlt sich deshalb, NBA Live 98 genau wie den Vorgänger zu spielen und erst später in die tiefen Geheimnisse einzusteigen. So gesehen, stellt NBA Live auch in der 98er Version ein Ausnahmeprodukt dar, das Basketballfans auf keinen Fall verpassen sollten.

Kortom, NBA Live 98 is voor mij het beste wat ik dit jaar zag op basketbalgebied. Een vergelijking maken met vorig jaar is eerder moeilijk. Het enige grote verschil is de 3D-weergave (met zeer realistische bewegingen tot gevolg) en de echte gezichten. Voor de rest zijn de opties allemaal hetzelfde gebleven en zijn ze voor de gelegenheid in een ander kleedje gestoken.

Overall, the game gives you more stats than you will ever use, but they are still fun to look at during the season. The skill levels should have been a bit more optimized and after playing a few games, you will never even go to anything below all star. The three point shootout was a great addition that really added something to the Basketball genre. All in all, if you are looking for a fun and great-looking game, look no further than NBA-Live.

EA have captured the feel of an arcade basketball game perfectly with NBA Live 98. If you don't already own a copy of NBA Live then you must find room in your collection for this excellent rendition of your favorite sport. If you already own an earlier version then trade it in against the sequel and you won't be disappointed.

Call me a purist, but the lack of a good defensive effort in many of today's NBA teams is a problem, and maybe NBA Live is just mimicking that style. There are still some fundamental problems in NBA Live 98, but it is a lot of fun to play and captures the sensationalized aspects of the NBA very well. With the added controls and improved playability, and the lack of any real competition, NBA Live 98 is undoubtedly the best basketball game for the PC.

In the end, NBA Live 98 has more of what players liked about the previous NBA Live titles and less of what they didn't. NBA live 98 is truly the first 32-bit Live that will make die-hard fans of the 16-bit versions happy.

Bei aller Kritik gehört NBA Live auch ’98 zu den besten Basketball-Programmen. Es verbindet schicke Grafik mit enormer Spieltiefe – dummerweise traf dies alles schon auf die 97er Version zu, die insgesamt sogar den runderen Eindruck macht. Bleibt noch ein Rätsel zu lösen: Wer um alles in der Welt hat die deutsche Version zu verantworten? Der deutsche Sprecher gibt seine – manchmal falschen – Phrasen mit einer Inbrunst zum besten, die an Preisdurchsagen von der Wursttheke im Supermarkt um die Ecke erinnert. Wenn schon NBA Live 98, dann auf jeden Fall das englische Original.

The Saturn hasn't been known for great basketball games and with the release of NBA Live 98 it doesn't look like its going to be any time soon. Live 98 features all of the modes fans are used to seeing, exhibition, season, playoff, and a new 3-point shootout mode. The 3-point shootout is super fun and allows players to go head to head. In the exhibition mode players will experience the usual knockdown, no such thing as a foul, arcade style of play. In season mode players can choose a 28, 56, or a full 82 game season. Players are allowed to choose from tons of offensive and defensive plays that can be implemented on the fly during play. Although as with most basketball games defensive play is still a bit of an issue. Players can simply drive to the basket almost at will.
