On the whole, the DS version of Need for Speed Most Wanted is a flawed and pale knockoff of its console counterpart. At its best, it's a standard racing game that coincidentally happens to have a few police cars roaming the streets along with the competitors. At its worst, it's downright frustrating.

'Flawed' is the nicest word that springs to mind when thinking of Need For Speed: Most Wanted. It's frustrating, as the groundwork for a decent game is definitely there, but it just seems to have been rushed and had poor touch screen uses tacked on. Go for Need For Speed Underground 2 if you're going to go for a serious racer on the DS.

Many reviewers before me have said it and I can only reiterate. To put all this in simple terms: whatever happened to sequels being better than the previous outing? Surely you can learn from your mistakes, after all don't you have that all-important user input? Most Wanted represents the second outing for the series on the DS but the gameplay and presentation are nowhere near as good as that of Ridge Racer or Asphalt Urban and they were far from perfect. It's almost as if they've completely ignored every criticism of the first game and without addressing these, they appear to have gone the extra mile and created a whole list of new ones. Don't get us wrong there's more than enough gameplay to be had here if you're prepared to overcome the rather steep learning curve thanks to the clumsy control system and dumb opponent AI, it's just that with other racers already out there, what's the point?

Need for Speed Underground 2 for the DS was a good, solid racing game that left some room for improvement. Need for Speed Most Wanted doesn't even try to address the previous game's shortcomings, instead throwing in a huge batch of its own. The game just doesn't gel at all: control is bad, objectives are confusing, and the visuals don't come anywhere near what EA did with the previous DS NFS game. And though there's some challenge here, it's mostly due to simply adopting to all the negatives to try and eke out some fun. The DS already has a good assortment of racers - this one just can't even sputter to the challenge.

A huge let down and a complete waste of time, that will probably only appeal to hard core fans of either the console or the franchise. Most of what made the Need for Speed series special is missing from these games. I have never been truly convinced that racing games belong on handheld consoles, and it was very clear that this game didn’t belong on either Nintendo GBA or DS. Need for Speed: Most Wanted I am sure will be a huge success on all the larger consoles and probably the PSP. I have seen both the Xbox and Game Cube version and they both look excellent, plus I am sure it will truly shine on the Xbox 360. So I recommend you go buy one of the other versions instead!

Seriously, EA is dismissing the DS. While outsourcing development is fine, it seems that quality control is at a minimum. If the DS version has some tenuous connection to the main game it’s a port of, then it’s good to go for retail. Need for Speed: Most Wanted is a classic example of this attitude. The best that can be said for the game is at least it’s not a direct port of the GBA game. However, it would definitely be a better game if it had been. This game is my punishment for some terrible sin I committed in a past life.
