Overall, I really can't express how pleased I am with this game. The automotive genre has been suffering lately from a veritable plethora of games without much collective substance behind them. It's pretty easy to become disillusioned with a genre that seems to be stuck in a continuous loop of identical gameplay. But thankfully, Need for Speed: Prostreet has come to the rescue with a whole new look, a whole new control scheme, and a whole new way to race. Thank goodness!

NFS ProStreet is from EA Black Box and it is about legal racing on courses comprised of city streets. This is still peddle to the metal racing on street courses, but rather that being illegal, ProStreet buckles players into the driver’ seat with the simple goal of winning races and working up the ladder. You can follow the main course through the career path (and the game will allow players to create two careers but no more than that) or you can take side trips to other races.

All in all, Need for Speed ProStreet is yet another highly enjoyable entry into the series. It takes on a slightly more realistic approach with its handling characteristics, albeit still maintaining that classic Need for Speed sense of speed. There is a slight learning curve, but the game is without a doubt the most rewarding since, perhaps, Hot Pursuit 2. It's much longer than Carbon, with far more depth in virtually every aspect - so it's got the value thing locked down. It looks pretty solid, and sounds like a symphony of angels. It may have some really screwy statistical data, but that doesn't erase the fun you'll still have with the game. Need for Speed ProStreet is a definite buy.

Need For Speed as a franchise, although giving a solid on-track performance in ProStreet, might want to consider a U-turn and returning back the street racing that made playing a Need For Speed title so titillating. There are still chills and thrills to be found in ProStreet’s more organized “underground” racing series, though, as the racing action still very much fills the need for speed for racing gamers.

Overall, the demo offers too little to make a solid impression of what NFS ProStreet can really do and since there's no taking it online, we can only hope it delivers even more top-notch gameplay. Still, ProStreet's damage system is something that cannot be described in simple words and so we're going to detail this aspect within the full game's review. Also, gamers will surely notice the gorgeous smoke effects as they spin their wheels waiting for the green light. Thus, since we've run out of metaphors and epithets to describe NFS ProStreet's visual and gameplay qualities, all that remains for you to do is download the demo via Xbox Live Marketplace and experience everything we've shared with you today, hands-on.

If you're a car enthusiast, Need for Speed: ProStreet is yet another solid racer with more vehicle customization than is probably necessary. Fans of the series will definitely want to try this one out with a rental before buying it. There's a distinct shift in ProStreet towards delivering more simulation and less arcade with your Need for Speed experience. The game certainly isn't bad, not by any stretch. But it is different. Try before you buy unless you're well-versed in the fine points of auto mechanics.

NFS: ProStreet is an accomplished title, but why the change? The street racing of the previous games was far more fun, and to be honest, wasn't tired yet, although Carbon was pretty rubbish, that was more down to the handling and graphics and gameplay issues when compared to Most Wanted or NFSU. Hopefully that game style will return soon. But the amazing graphics and solid gameplay hold up well, although the game was never going to be as good as PGR4 or Forza 2. However, if you have played these 2 games to death, 'ProStreet' is easily the next best road racer of 2007, and is well worth a play thanks to the customisation options and lengthy career mode.

Need for Speed fans may initially be put off by ProStreet's deviation from the current franchise formula, but true racing fans will appreciate the attention to detail that EA has added to the actual important part of the game: the racing.

Meine Erwartungen waren hoch.

But it's that wholly rebuilt, almost-a-sim physics engine that propels ProStreet to such heights. Tossing these weighty sedans and exotics around, knowing you're connected to the road by just four distinct contact points, then late braking into a turn and riding the very limits of adhesion through it, is ungodly fun -- and darned challenging. Add in a bevy of alternate modes (including thrilling drag and "drift" events, each with modified physics), a damage model that would make an auto wrecker proud, and a soundscape that just doesn't quit, and you have the pinnacle of Need for Speed-ism.

For the series fans, probably a disappointment - you really should ignore the whole "Need for Speed" part of the title, as it's there just for branding. As a stand-alone racer, a competent console conversion; maybe a bit repetitive in the long run, but still a fair effort from EA.

Since the early days of PS2, Need for Speed has dropped several worthwhile sequels (and before that, several great games on PSone). Need for Speed ProStreet didn’t turn out to be the perfect Swan Song the world was waiting for, but really, it’s more disappointing than it is flawed. Players will have a hard adapting to the pro style, which is more about sharp turns than breathtaking speeds. It was even harder for me to adapt since I played the last game, NFS Carbon, on Xbox 360. Without question, that is where the series belongs – on PS3 and Xbox 360. Its PS2 days are done. But if a PS2 is all you have, and if simulation racers are more your style, ProStreet isn’t a bad game to kill time with.

The one undoubtedly cool thing that ProStreet brings to the table is it's online play (except on Wii), where you can create your own race days and invite friends to compete in them. The race day will keep a persistent leaderboard of everyone's progress, so you can always go back and knock off your buddy. How often do I change my motor oil, you ask? Whenever I damn well feel like it.

All in all ProStreet is a more than innovating game in the NFS-family, mostly thanks to the circuit racing, the long career mode and some new game types. You can see it as a Hot Pursuit 2 mixed with Carbon but without cops and completely legal. The game is a worthy successor in the series although the controls could have been better. Hopefully we'll be getting more from this but a bit better.

At first, Need For Speed ProStreet is quite a neat experience to have, but after some time in career mode you’ll get bored nonetheless. It’s just too damn long. The level of Most Wanted is never even touched and to be honest, ProStreet barely succeeds in over classing Carbon. The graphics look good, and the main part of it is thanks to the visible damage done to your car and their effect on the car's handling. Some of you probably won’t be able to appreciate this in the Need For Speed series where arcade has been the main event for several years. In my opinion, ProStreet is a good game; no absolute hit, but certainly good enough as a PC racer.

It’s a pretty game; it’s also fairly repetitive and tends to be aimed more at Pro gamers than the casual gamer. A lack of open world gameplay brings the series back towards its roots, but in the end hampers it more than helps - Perhaps next time?

In its next gen guise, Need for Speed: ProStreet is a solid but not exceptional game that, to EA's credit, veers from the traditional NFS course and will therefore please some more than others. Unfortunately, the PS2 version takes a big hit with the loss of online capabilities and that glorious car damage. Still, if the new concept seems appealing and if you like the thought of a more realistic ride, it'll likely keep you driving for many weeks ahead. Just remember -- the sheer manic pleasure of a cop chase or a head-on collision is not in the cards.

Not only does the track based racing highlight the game's less-than-stellar car physics, it makes the game's attempt at a story feel all the more disjointed and uninspired. ProStreet does have some impressive graphics, but its gameplay is about as vanilla as they come.

Apart from looking like an ugly baby conceived in the back of a broken-down El Camino by a couple of illiterates, tilting the Wii remote translates to your car surprisingly well. There is no online play, however, and I didn't like the feel of the brakes because they didn't offer nearly enough subtlety for the courses. The control setup also made it too easy to accidentally hit the nitrous.

Overall, it is hard to argue that this is not a competent update to a strong franchise. But we can’t help but feel a little of the character has been lost along the way. It’s a game that may well appeal to a broader demographic, but also one that may leave its existing fans somewhat out in the cold. There really needed to be more innovation and less reworking of old ideas if Pro Street was ever going to live up to the (not insurmountable) hype.

Frankly speaking, if you’ve played any of the NFS games before and are looking for something new, don’t expect to find it in this version. With recycled gameplay, unresponsive controls, and mediocre graphics, the PS2 version of this game lacks the fineness seen on the 360 and PS3 versions. With nothing really exceptional to offer gamers, it looks like the NFS series is finally coming to an end.

With all of the good racing games that are already available, I certainly can't recommend this title. If this is what we can expect from future Need for Speed games for this console, then perhaps ProStreet should be the last. It is clear that this version was an afterthought considering the sizeable quality difference between it and its next generation brothers. Not having any online play also hinders this title, but it most likely wouldn't have helped much considering all of its other issues. If you are looking for a great and enjoyable racing experience, you should definitely look elsewhere.

So, here's how things are. NFS fans who appreciated earlier games, are likely to regard ProStreet as a disappointment. We applaud the developer's attempt to create something fresh, over the concept of illegal races and being pursued by the police. Yet, this new style isn't quite the improvement we were hoping for. The tournaments and races become tedious after a few hours, which also goes for the tracks. There is a decent choice of tracks available. Still, they seem rather uninteresting when compared to the locations in, say, Most Wanted. As it turns out, customization and realistic damage represent modest signs of progress and they make the gameplay interesting for a while. These additions, as I'm sure most of you will agree, fail to compensate for all those things that made ProStreet's predecessors shine - free-roam driving, outracing the cops, story-driven gameplay and so on.

Need for Speed ProStreet is a decent racing game that got sidetracked along the way. It appears EA was more concerned with in-game advertising than ensuring the game got the proper attention it needed. Hopefully next year’s version will fix these issues so players can get their racing game fix.

Knowing that the next-gen versions of ProStreet deliver top notch visuals, online game modes, the possibility of sharing blue prints and becoming Street King on Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network, we can't possibly say too many good things about the game's PS2 port, except that it does sport the typical NFS elements everyone loves, combined with racing simulation elements for more realism. But there is so much more to realism in a racing game, than just good control and car physics. Visuals, damage system, sound, they all need to leave a good impression if a series of such prestige is going to live up to its name. Sadly, we can't say that ProStreet does so, unless I was wearing someone else's glasses while playing the game... well, the rating will do the rest of the talking for me.

If you're a diehard fanatic of Need for Speed and you're short on cash for a PS3, I suppose ProStreet for the PlayStation 2 is an okay substitute. But in the grand scheme of things, the series is really showing its age on the older, outdated hardware. With no online, below average visuals, limited damage model, among other cuts, the PS2 port is better off left alone. I suggest saving that money and putting it towards a PlayStation 3 - or if money is an issue, a used 20GB PS3 on eBay can be had for a superb price. The differences between a game like ProStreet on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 are astronomical - certainly worth the price of admission.

It sort of feels like EA is starting over again, leaving the open-world aspects to other games like its own Burnout Paradise, but is seems like Black Box didn't know what to do with what was left. It could have still been a decent game had the cars driven well, but unfortunately their performance is shoddy. Car lovers will find something to like here due to the customization options, but Need for Speed has certainly seen better days.

Honestly, we still prefer Most Wanted to ProStreet even though ProStreet offers significantly improved tire smoke that actually wraps around the wheel wells of your car, because Most Wanted had cops that chased us and provided a really compelling reason to drive as fast as humanly possible. Somehow, without the incentive of resisting arrest (and with the incentive of unlocking even more commercials and advertisements, blech) our interest in this franchise is beginning to wain.

EA should be commended for at least trying to make some sweeping changes with Prostreet. For those of you that took offence to the often sloppy and unfocused worlds of Most Wanted and Carbon, this could represent a return to more likeable pastures – it certainly harks back to the carefree days of the first few games in the series, where the only thing that mattered was winning. However, it’s clear that many 'modern' NFS fans have been brought up on the more recent entries and will miss the features that have been introduced over the past few years; one can safely assume that petrol-heads weined on the original NFS have most likely progressed to Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport and Porject Gotham Racing. The Wii lacks a pure racing game in the same vein as these genre classics, and while Prostreet can’t hope to compete, it’s an acceptable substitute until a true racing saviour appears on Nintendo’s machine.

So I guess I’ve come around to my question; does Pro Street make NFS back into a series that I enjoy following. Simple answer: no it doesn’t. The main reason is its muddled design process. Realistically, (excuse my pun) the game isn’t going to draw the realism-craving Forza / GT fans away, but at the same time it’s alienating the fans of the series; the arcade racers. Any fans of NFS are better of sticking with Most Wanted, where kitting up cars and racing the dog’s bollocks off them is well executed. EA better have the next game (which they will) return to the glory days otherwise I feel that the NFS series will be nothing more than an inside joke for gamers for years to come. If you really need a Racing fix this year (before Christmas) then buy PGR 4. If you can hang on, wait till Burnout Paradise is released in January.

While Need for Speed: Prostreet is a decent racing game with some lovely online play, it’s ultimately a step backwards for the series. The lack of police chases, the horrendous amount of in-game advertising and a lack of interesting events make this feel like a competent but uninspired effort that may end up collecting dust sooner that you think.

The Need for Speed series over the last few years has provided gamers with an excellent alternative to the likes of Forza, Gran Turismo and PGR, but EA's decision to move closer to those kings of the racing genre was a big mistake. ProStreet isn't a bad game, it simply doesn't hold a candle to its competition, and Need for Speed fans will be left wondering where all the fun has gone from the illegal, turned legal, street racing series.

Ultimately Need For Speed ProStreet is the people carrier of the video game world. It tries to cover all the bases and provide street, simulation and racing experiences and consequently does not master any of these disciplines. Gamestyle would hope that it returns to its roots and as what may be the last release in the series on the PlayStation 2, ProStreet is a disappointing send off.

NFS Prostreet is a highly polished title, but completely absent of entertainment value. Strangely opposite of most franchises, the Need for Speed series has taken a rapid decline since the release of Need for Speed: Most Wanted in the first year of the Xbox 360. It's progressively becoming a game that's all shine, but no true substance. By removing fan favorites like police chases, solid storyline and an open world aspect, the developers on Prostreet have stripped the series down to a hollow shell. There's a modicum of folks that attend events like Race Week that may enjoy the structure of the game, but it's quite dated and sadly boring for the rest of us. If you just can't stay away, rent Prostreet to get a feel for what I talking about. Otherwise, stick to titles like Test Drive Unlimited until Electronic Arts gets it right.

If this was any other series than Need for Speed and if it didn't contain all the background rubbish then the fact that this was a driving game that was horrible to drive would be enough to consign it to the bargain bins from the off. Unfortunately we live in a world where brand names guarantee sales and looking 'cool' is more important than actually being, you know, any good. By losing the open city nature of previous games and restricting you to organised events the series has lost a large part of what was fun about it in the first place. Add to that the fact that the driving itself seems to have become horribly broken since last year and suddenly you're left with a game that's relying solely on its image to shift copies. The fact that it'll probably still top the charts in a Christmas season that see's titles like Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy competing for shelf space is a sad indictment of how, even on the Wii, rubbish will sell if you market it well enough.

Whilst the absence of any online racing hurts the Wii version of NFS ProStreet, it's the poor controls that make it a game that few will enjoy. Having played the game on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and the Wii, I have to conclude that the Wii version is by far the worst of the lot because of its poor controls that just aren't good enough. The developers didn't even include the option to use the classic controller or a GameCube controller, which seems crazy. If your only option for playing ProStreet is the Wii version you would be well advised to rent it first to see if you can tolerate the dodgy controls the game has.

Because there isn’t much else to do (e.g. there’s no free-roaming city to explore!) you can’t really avoid it too much. The entire development team seems to have just tried too hard to make a decent title, and changed key areas of their previous titles which simply shouldn’t have been changed. Sadly, this Need for Speed title is the first one for a long time that needs to be left on the shelf. Go back to what we had before EA, it’s much better.

With its stripped-down features, lackluster graphics and non-functional controls, Need for Speed: ProStreet on the Wii is the least-fun version of the game we've seen yet. Never mind the overwrought advertising, because in order for those concerns to be broached, we'd have to actually be interested in the content beneath all the ads. Sadly, we find the Wii version lacking in even the few things that excited us about the other versions.
