Magician Lord...The game that made the Neo Geo what it is today. Take the best of everything; Graphics, music, gameplay, cinema displays and challenge that will keep you on the edge of your seat at all times, add them all together and, behold the king of action/platform games!
The Games Machine (UK)
Out of the three Neo-Geo games reviewed, this is the hardest to play, and the one with the most long-term appeal. The transformation potions are a good idea since they add a whole new dimension to the game. As with any greal game the only minus point is that it can get very frustrating when you've failed to get past a certain screen for the hundredth time.
The Video Game Critic
The action involves navigating platforms in castles, caves, and forests while shooting creatures and avoiding traps. Some levels even offer multiple pathways. The characters are large, and while the game's animation has been criticized in other reviews, I didn't think it was so bad. The scenery is varied and painstakingly detailed. I had a great time playing Magician Lord, even though I was killed more times than Jason in a Friday the 13th movie. Two things make this game hard. First there are those annoying flying things that always appear when you're stuck on a ladder (you can't attack while on a ladder). Second, the bosses are crazy tough. The first one alone took me about ten tries to defeat! Fortunately you can save your spot to a memory card. But overall I do like Magician Lord - it has a certain old-school sensibility about it.
Lens of Truth
Magician Lord was released as a pack-in game for the Neo-Geo Gold system back in the 1990s and it retailed for a whopping $649.99. Although Magician Lord was very difficult, most of the time the game itself was quit enjoyable. Platforming never looked this good and the Neo-Geo home console brought the best the market had to offer into you living room. Yes, the price of the system was ridiculously high but Magician Lord on the Neo-Geo home console was a pixel perfect arcade experience that no other system on the market could claim.
Digital Press - Classic Video Games
This is one of the most revered Geo games ever devised and it's easy to understand why. The insane amount of colors being thrown at the player has yet to be equaled an the soundtrack should be in Wal-Marts music department. It may not seem like this one is terribly original, but it does provide enough changes to the now-standard formula that it will keep any and all platform fans engrossed. That is, IF they have the patience to take this one on. Good luck, and may the force be with you.
All Game Guide
If you can overlook these serious flaws, Magician Lord offers great shooter gameplay. The levels are creative, and there's a good variety to monsters and their attack patterns. Level one starts off easy enough, but the game quickly builds to an intense difficulty level that will take most gamers quite a bit of gameplay to master.
I find myself wishing that this most beautiful experience would not be so unfair. But then I catch myself - it wouldn’t be Magician Lord were it not so unbalanced. The underlying philosophy seems to stress excess. Excessive, otherworldly beauty, and excessive, swarming difficulty. Understand that while five out of ten is an average score, there is nothing average about this game. The score represents a perverse kind of equilibrium: truly, like me, you’ll hate Magician Lord. You will love Magician Lord.
