It’s very easy for me to come to the conclusion that Bionic Commando has greatly withstood the test of time. It was one of my favorite games growing up, and it’s still one of my favorites now here at the nursing home.

Its story not withstanding however, Bionic Commando is in a league of its own. The "bionic" part of your soldier is his extensible arm, which pulls him up onto high platforms and allows him to swing to distant ledges. Getting comfortable with the arm control is the key to playing Bionic Commando, and it does take a while. You're also equipped with all the obligatory weapons including machine guns, bazookas, and rocket launchers. Although primarily a side-scrolling affair, there are also some terrific overhead stages that play similar to Mercs or Front Line. By accessing scattered enemy computers you obtain clues and can even spy on your enemies. Bionic Commando is loaded with unique stages, and you can choose the order in which they are played. No question about it - Bionic Commando was way ahead of its time.

So, the game can get somewhat cheap at times, but still has more than its share of positives. Simply put, Bionic Commando is fun as hell, with attractively-designed bases and enemies and a few musical tunes that do a great job of adding to the atmosphere — especially when the hero is doing things like scaling a vast tower in ”5” or navigating the maze-like corridors of ”8”. I must admit I don’t play that many of my favorite games on the NES because they simply haven’t aged well. This isn’t one of them. I loved it in the ‘90s and I still love playing it today.

This mix of unique gameplay, huge level areas and story (even if it was altered for US gameplay) was what made Bionic Commando so ahead of its time, and even when compared to today's titles, you will find nothing quite like it. Swinging for your life has never been so much fun.

Digital Press - Classic Video Games
Bionic Commando is still a classic to this day, and it is practically a requirement for all NES owners, especially if they happen to be Capcom fans. What other classics give you a bionic arm to fight evil Nazi forces? Unless there's a secret code in Wolfenstein 3D that allows you to use one, I don't know of any others. As a final incentive to play, you are treated to an unbelievably gory display near the end of the game. To find out what it is, play Bionic Commando, soak in the glory of its greatness, let time pass by around you, and finish it as an extremely satisfied gamer.

Kingdom of Desire

Apparently a lot of people are very rabid about this title, which I discovered when trying to find an instruction manual to make sense of the thing. Fansites, essays, testimonials as to how this game got people interested in game design; the list goes on, much to my shock at the time, as I'd never even heard of the game when it was first released. So, I would not say that the fans won me over - but they convinced me to take a second, grateful look at a game that takes an extreme amount of adjusting to.

Bionic Commando is tough from the start, and within minutes you're screaming your head off and hurling the joypad around with frustration (well, I was)! However, if you can rise to the challenge, the game has plenty on offer - the combination of arcade action coupled with a bit of strategy works very well indeed, and the bionic arm adds a whole new dimension to the gameplay. I must say that even though it's tough, Bionic Commando is an addictive and enjoyable game with plenty of lasting appeal - try it out if you're after a real challenge.
