Description

Rumor says that the legendary Black Onyx, an artifact that grants eternal youth and happiness to those who can find it, lies within the Black Tower near the town of Utsuro. You assemble a party of brave adventurers and venture into the tower, defeating monsters on your way to the great treasure.

"Black Onyx", the very first RPG made by a Japanese company, is similar in gameplay to early Wizardry games. You create a party (up to five members) and explore a maze-like 3D dungeon, fighting random enemies on the way. You also meet adventurers whom you can convince to join your party. The combat engine is turn-based.

Trivia

Although "Black Onyx" is widely recognized as the very first role-playing game developed in Japan and by a Japanese company, the title "first Japanese RPG" is usually applied to Dragon Warrior. The reason for that is the fact "Dragon Warrior" followed a different model. While the style and the gameplay of "Black Onyx" was based on Wizardry, "Dragon Warrior" was mainly inspired by Ultima. This model proved to fit Japanese audience better, and had a much larger influence on the development of the genre. For this reason "Dragon Warrior" inspired many other games and earned the title of the first Japanese RPG, while "Black Onyx" remained in shadow.
