Regardless of how many issues I had with this game's password system, I never stopped coming back for more. Hell, I just played The Guardian Legend for the first time in years and had just as much fun with it as I did back in the day, which isn't something I feel about too many of those ancient eight-bit games. The manic action of the shooter stages perfectly mesh with the exploration and character-building aspects of the dungeons to create a special game I'll likely never get tired of playing.

The Guardian Legend is a tough yet engrossing game. This is one of those titles you can sit down with for several evenings, play straight for several hours, and put it back on the shelf when you're finished, being thoroughly satisfied. Even though it lacks replay value, the first time through is tough enough to keep you going, and will prove to be a really fun time.

For all the freshness this game brought to the scene, it's overly confusing world map and outrageous password system (32 characters long!) tainted the overall experience.

Video Games and Computer Entertainment: Complete Guide to Nintendo Video Games
The Guardian Legend is actually two games in one. In some levels, you'll streak through rapidly scrolling shoot-'em-up scenes. Talk about button-scorching action! When inside the labyrinths, you must explore from room to room, finding your way deeper into Naju and fighting shiploads of creatures. As you explore, you'll find additional weapons, such as multibullets, black fire, area blasters, and repellers, among many others. You'll also come across special items that will increase your powers. All in all, The Guardian Legend adds elements of space adventure to a galactic war shoot-'em-up and comes up a winner.

The adventure mode is fun to replay, and it's nice that the programmers went the extra mile by giving you the all-shooter mode, too. This gives the game decent replay value, and is enough to etch it more solidly in my mind as a game that deserves recognition.

Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Guardian Legend is similar to Zanac but is really two games in one. The maze scenes aren't hard but they are long. The flying sequences are also easy with all of the difficulty wrapped up into the Boss confrontations. The game does do a good job of bringing the two separate game themes together.
