Peppered throughout the game are fun bonus stages that challenge you to avoid a swinging hammer, crush ice blocks, or catch flies with chopsticks. Despite its control flaws, I had a great time playing Karate Kid. It requires more technique and offers more variety than your typical side-scroller. Fans of the movie should be pleased.
Controls are all around decent, but jumping
with the directional pad can be a bit tricky. Some of the later game
segments, like the wind in stage three or keeping a girl from
drowning in stage four, can be more frustrating than necessary.
The two-player mode is a fairly unexciting versus affair, and with
a lack of moves it gets stale immediately. All in all, though, despite
some fairly legitimate complaints, the game is still a pretty decent
Fans of the movie should enjoy playing this game pak as it isn’t a total disaster. Casual gamers will be instantly turned off by it. It is a good game for beginning gamers, though, since it is short and easy to beat.
The enemies are all duplicates and repeated infinitum, so again, there’s no real strategy to destroying them. Perhaps the biggest offense in these portions are the puny jumping abilities of the Kid and that you have to press ‘Up’ to make him jump at all. The Karate Kid, while filled typical, nonsensical additions (what’s with the girl the Kid has to save at the end?), still, by the grace of God, ends fairly abruptly, sparing you the need to rip the cartridge out and throw it at some snooty jogger who passes by your suburban house and sneers in the window daily, thinking he’s better than your cottage cheese butt. He might have a point, but there’s no need for violence.
The Karate Kid does a semi-decent job of representing the heart of the movies but unfortunately its gameplay is lousy and poorly implemented. The boring level design is by-the-numbers and the fact that you can see everything the game has to offer in 10-15 minutes means it's ultimately a forgettable experience.
