Mario Bros. for the NES includes all the elements that made the arcade original such a super time, including the riotous two-player simultaneous mode. All ports should remain this faithful to their coin-op counterparts.
What makes the game really enjoyable is the one or two-player option, which allows Mario and Luigi to play simultaneously, either as a team, or as enemies (it depends on your choice of tactics). For me, the competitive edge of two players battling together really makes the game - but the game is still incredibly enjoyable when you play solo. The graphics are simple and clean, but it's the gameplay is superb; simple, yet incredibly addictive. Go for it!

The game where Mario gets his real name and profession and Luigi Mario´s younger brother makes his first appearance. Mario and Luigi jumps around on one screen level and must defeat various enemies by jumping up and punching the platform under the enemies so that they bounce up in the air and land on their backs. Then Mario or Luigi can run and beat the crap out of them! Through the game you only faces around 3-5 different types of enemies and all the course looks exactly the same. This makes this game a little bit boring after a while even if you can play Mario Bros with a friend. Mario Bros is more varied game than the Donkey Kong games but can´t be compared with games like SMB1, 2 and 3. I recommend that you but SMB 3 instead where you get Mario Bros as a sub game for free!
It’s solid and challenging action, especially when the number of enemies increases and other nuisances such as fireballs show up. A two-player simultaneous mode increases the fun, as brother Luigi can run and bump into Mario, resulting in some frantic action as both vie for points. It’s a simple game by design, but it’s structurally sound, and perfect for quick, fun, single-screen arcade action.

They’re the Mario Brothers, and plumbing’s their game. Certainly in 1983, before there was any mention of Princess Toadstool or the Mushroom Kingdom or Koopa, the Mario Bros. were two regular joes just trying to earn a living, and Mario Bros. reflects just how low-income said living was. Both brothers run around in an underground, pipe-ridden world, stopping turtles, crabs, flies, and ice from gumming up the sewers.

This is a great translation of a mediocre old-school arcade game. If you love early video games or are a huge fan of Mario then you won’t be disappointed. Otherwise you can give this one a pass.

RetroGame Man (Jul 27, 2017)
In summary, this is a challenging Mario game that while fun, just isn’t as good as all the rest that followed. It’s true that it added a ton to the Mario story including green pipes, and turtles, and the iconic Luigi, but it just isn’t as engaging as the rest. A redeeming quality is the fun multiplayer, but you can get that game with every Super Mario 3.
