Nightshade is a light-hearted noir with memorable characters, unique features, and an enveloping atmosphere. The Nintendo could have used more games like this.
Even despite its greatest faux pas (not having any save/password system), the game is a breath of fresh air and has a staggering amount of content that is a welcome addition to the NES library.
Retro Game Reviews (Sep 19, 2016)
Nightshade is unlike anything else I've played on the NES and it's great to see a game that would normally grace 8-bit computers find a home on a console. It does have some obvious flaws (especially the shoehorned combat mechanics) but as a whole it's a good adventure game with a large, open world and an intriguing plot.
Overall, this is a pretty nice effort and an enjoyable contest for the patient gamer who enjoys deductive reasoning and who also happens to have a broad-ranged sense of humor.
It's pretty standard stuff here, but the graphics, sound, and game play are all incorporated into a cart that is, above all, fun to play!
