Rare brought the world some excellent visuals in a semi-3D format, tricking gamers by setting the viewpoint in a top-down, isometric stance that gave an impressive feel to what was really just a 2D game dressed-up. Fellow Brits, Software Creations, took this idea and built upon it for Solstice, creating intricate worlds full of crazy creatures, terrible traps and a plethora of hidden paths. This stands out definitely as one of the more technically pleasing NES games on the market and really shows what could be achieved on the humble 8-bit platform.

In the end, it comes down to this: If you want a challenge of gigantic proportion, then waste no more time and go find this game. But if you do not enjoy games as difficult as this then please heed my advice and DO NOT play this game. If you do, it might result in you hurting yourself, others, or worst of all, an innocent video game...

I've always been a big fan of isometric 3D games, and am pleased to see this style of game on a console. Solstice is very much in the classic Knightlore mould, and transporting items from one location to another and avoiding traps and baddies is what it's all about. Swift reflexes are required in many situations, and you've also got to get your old grey matter into gear if you are to solve all the puzzles - some of them are very devious! With over 250 screens, great graphics and some of the best music and sound effects I've heard in a Nintendo game, this is a must for arcade adventure fiends looking for a long-lasting challenge!
